I was on the MM fanpop when I came across this comment, from awhile ago ... which ... unfortunately ... got taken down last night.
Basically, what it was saying was that the "Christian community" found MM offensive, from the constant cursing to cases about drugs, alcohol, etc. And of course ... murder. They called the show a "sin", and made note that someone needed tell the producers to make the show more friendly for people of this faith, saying it was a violation of their Lord which they loved so much.
Being an atheist, I was rather dumbfounded.
... So, comments?

Being an atheist, I was rather dumbfounded. ... So, comments? Aw that makes me sad. One of the things I find interesting about MM is the way it respects religion without being sappy about it. A lot of shows that ostensibly respect religion are actually religion's worst enemy because they make people of faith look saccharine, naive, and cliche-ridden. Respectful and authentic portrayal of religion is essential to a period piece like MM, but there is no reason MM has to CATER to the religious audience because it's intention is not to propagate faith. The show includes characters of different faiths and is set at a time of growing secularism. This historic shift between the religious interpretation of the world and the secular interpretation of the world is part of what makes the turn of the century so interesting. It's part of what makes William so interesting as a character. If he wasn't so "compartmentalized", the contradictions involved might make him schizophrenic! Anyway, some Jesus freak fundamentalists just have to turn everything into witnesses for their version of religion. Pay no heed to his "offense". Just look at the Middle East if you want to see where constantly getting offended about what other people believe/say about God gets you. One thing that does bum me out is wildhorsesannie disappeared from the forum after I gave some consideration to crack pairing in MM - or rather speculated on what cued me to regard MM as overwhelming heterosexual when normally I enjoy a lot of variety of pairings. She's a conservative Christian. Hope she wasn't repelled by too much alternative lifestyle talk.

I've been wondering where wildhorseannie has been too. I'm hoping she's just been busy or was frustrated that she was only on season 5 and we're finished 7.
It drives me nuts when healthy discussion gets preached at. I have SO MUCH more to say on it but this is NOT the place for it. As you say snacky, MM is a period piece. Drugs like cocaine and heroin were legal at the time. Nobody's dealing them. Their use was standard practice. Brackenreid wouldn't be the love-muffin he is without his 'contemptuous' language.
I think we've all said, in one way or another, that MM's writers have been very sensitive about exploring religious issues without preaching one viewpoint over another. Keep it up writers!!

She said she watches with her father - I presume he's elderly. It might have been a personal emergency. Or she might have taken a trip for a summer or simply found better things to do. She isn't keeping up her Photobucket screenshots either. Like you, I do hope we can all speak freely without taking offense at one anothers opinions. Hey Canada just celebrated a World Pride festival! At the same time, it never hurts to speak with respect for one anothers feelings or "traditional" sensibilities.

Here, here! The Pride festival is a blast! So many people, so much energy and crazy outfits! It's a celebration of people coming together regardless of who, what or how they are. Honestly, the epitome of no judgement.

Hi Snacky. Just found this thread. If I understood you correctly Christian fundamentalists have said that MM is sinful and has too much swearing, drugs and alcohol and murder.
This would be funny if it weren't so sad. I wonder if anyone has bothered pointing out to them that MM is a police drama and police investigate murders along with other crimes.
The only swearing I am really aware of is the Brackenreid's 'Bloody hell!" with the occasional "damn it."
As for drugs, it these people are referring to heroine, morphine and cocaine they were perfectly legal in the early years of the the 20th century and were sold over the counter. These drugs were no part of an illicit drug trade.
It might behoove them to do a wee bit of research before they go off on a crusade based on false premises and half truths. Very sad indeed.
Just saying.

I find it fascinating that some fundamentalists are so afraid that exposure to 'sinful behaviour' translates to 'practicing sinful behaviour'. My son's friend was removed from class when they were studying mythology, as though exposure to an ancient belief system has anything to do with one's current practice of faith.

Honestly, the epitome of no judgement. I have been to two parades and I fully agree: aside from being the best street party I've ever seen, the culture of full acceptance is wonderful.

Just saying. It wasn't me that originally said that. Someone else found a post on Facebook or another TV forum that said that, and I responded. I regard MM as "family safe". When I discovered MM, it was as a show that I could recommend to my Mom, who worked as a Church secretary for most of her working career. I've never recommended a show to my Mom before. Moreover, I've never found a show that I would like as well as my Mom! Now it's my favorite show, and my Mom watches it, too! It gives us something in common to talk about (across a very large generational and geographic/cultural divide). I thank MM for that!!!! I have gotten the impression that you come from a religious background or a religous area of the country, so I'm really glad you see it this way, too.

Parents who act like that do a great disservice to their children. What the world needs are people who have learned to think for themselves and actively problem solve: not robots who have been indoctrinated. I don't think I am exaggerating by saying that our future as a race depends on leaders and followers who have an informed world view. The education system in my province has stated expectations for graduates which include something along those lines. Unfortunately the reality still falls short because change is slow at the grassroots level. Educators are also in constant fear of lawsuits from disgruntled parents. There are some schools who have banned balls from the schoolyards because of fear that somebody will get bonked on the head! Talk about taking childhood away!

I grew up in a very Fundamentalist area, and I now live in the most culturally diverse, tolerant area of the U.S. History went by really fast in our lifetimes! Very similar to MM, and a couple of other "hot" time periods.

In the US educators are now also constrained by canned curriculums and needing to teach to continuous round of pretty lame standardized tests. In many cases the class sizes are too large for them to do much teaching at all, and they end up babysitting instead of teaching. It's not a career I would want to go into right now. But I do think the future of education is really exciting: we've only just begun to explore (and fund) what we can do with technology in education.

The Ontario education system is the same...a ridiculously implemented curriculum and teaching to do well on standardized testing. Arggh. We're not too bad on class size though. There is a bright future but I think we need to balance technology and with letting kids be kids. They spend so much time on screens that they have the attention span of a gnat with real people and their 'free time' is so structured that they have no clue how to just go outside and make up your own fun for the day.
