Absolutely agree with lovemondays. The standardized tests create lots of stress and take up lots of valuable class time, because even though we are not supposed to teach to the test, lots of time is put in to test preparation. As for class size and staffing, I can only say thank god the conservatives did not get elected this time around.

In the US educators are now also constrained by canned curriculums and needing to teach to continuous round of pretty lame standardized tests. In many cases the class sizes are too large for them to do much teaching at all, and they end up babysitting instead of teaching. It's not a career I would want to go into right now. But I do think the future of education is really exciting: we've only just begun to explore (and fund) what we can do with technology in education. For technology in the classroom funding is critical: in my experience many classrooms have two computers, both from the Stone Age , that barely work. It is getting better, some schools have iPad carts and interactive white boards, which are awesome tools in the hands of skilled teachers. However I also think an important component of education is the interaction that occurs in the classroom: discussions, group presentations, partner work and yes, basic skills such as reading and writing to express your own thoughts. Call me a bit old fashioned but I still think it important to learn how to hold a pencil and pen properly and to spell without using spellcheck!

You are bang on. My kids are the first generation who don't have a solid grounding in cursive writing. Their signatures are awful as adults. I don't think our society has figured out yet how to balance being human in a technological age. Conversational skills are declining and spelling is being reduced to text-speak.

Hi Snacky. Just found this thread. If I understood you correctly Christian fundamentalists have said that MM is sinful and has too much swearing, drugs and alcohol and murder.
This would be funny if it weren't so sad. I wonder if anyone has bothered pointing out to them that MM is a police drama and police investigate murders along with other crimes.
The only swearing I am really aware of is the Brackenreid's 'Bloody hell!" with the occasional "damn it."
As for drugs, it these people are referring to heroine, morphine and cocaine they were perfectly legal in the early years of the the 20th century and were sold over the counter. These drugs were no part of an illicit drug trade.
It might behoove them to do a wee bit of research before they go off on a crusade based on false premises and half truths. Very sad indeed.
Just saying. It wasn't me that originally said that. Someone else found a post on Facebook or another TV forum that said that, and I responded. I regard MM as "family safe". When I discovered MM, it was as a show that I could recommend to my Mom, who worked as a Church secretary for most of her working career. I've never recommended a show to my Mom before. Moreover, I've never found a show that I would like as well as my Mom! Now it's my favorite show, and my Mom watches it, too! It gives us something in common to talk about (across a very large generational and geographic/cultural divide). I thank MM for that!!!! I have gotten the impression that you come from a religious background or a religous area of the country, so I'm really glad you see it this way, too.

Hi Snacky.
I understand that you were referring to someone else. I regret that I wasn't clear in my post.
I am not particularly religious, but my study of religion is based in my academic background.
What info do you need to make an avatar?
Thanks

I'm just learning how to do this screencap thing and I've got georgeisclairvoyant on site today to help. We're all a bit hamstrung without Grande Caps but I have all the DVD's to draw from. All we need to know for your avatar is whether you have a particular theme, person(s) or episode you want represented. From there we cull a few selections and then you pick. I'm just offering to give me some practice but I won't be offended if you want to wait for snacky.

we need to balance technology and with letting kids be kids. They spend so much time on screens that they have the attention span of a gnat with real people and their 'free time' is so structured that they have no clue how to just go outside and make up your own fun for the day. The best technology liberates people from technology.

Call me a bit old fashioned but I still think it important to learn how to hold a pencil and pen properly and to spell without using spellcheck! I've heard that people are losing the ability to write/read in cursive. It seems to me that people might lose some neurological connections/structures if that happens. The next generation might actually think differently just because of that. I once read a book called The Alphabet and The Goddess. It wasn't a very good book, and it was trying to connect these neurological changes to gender or something. But I have to go back and look at it, because it seems like we are reverting to "The Goddess"...but IMHO it's totally inappropriate and pointless to feminize that neurological transition.

Cool! What type of academic study? For the avatar, I would need to know which character or characters you want to include. Also tell me if you want a particular episode or a particular scene. You can also tell me if you want a particular theme of some sort. Anything that would help me guess at something you would like!

How are conversational skills declining? When you see groups together, particularly young adults, how many are looking at their phones, texting or have it lying right next to their hand on the table? The fact that the phone is even in sight means the person is not fully engaged in the conversation. It drives me nuts when a friend will interrupt our conversation to answer a text.

I see - very good point. Fortunately, this effect is not as extreme where I live since the whole area is covered with coffee shops and restaurants: it's sort of designed to create occasions for conversation. But most of the rest of the U.S. is one vast generic suburban strip mall, so I get what you're saying.

At the moment I'm stuck trying to download a "location" shot from my phone to my computer and it's lost in cyberspace My resources are very limited because Grande Caps is down. I propose we both give it a shot as far as we're able. MrsBrisby should give us some clues as to what she wants first.
