I discuss William's tragedies a lot, but last night I had some insight into Julia's.
Last night I rewatched The Black Hand, and I realized that was the moment when Julia realized that William had set his heart on her, and perhaps even realized he was going to continue to carry a torch for her instead of settling down into the family life she had presumed. (see post here).
After Julia had told William about her abortion in Shades of Grey, William had almost immediately taken up with Enid (that was partially a misunderstanding because she was busy when he attempted to smooth things over, but that's another barrel of monkeys). What Julia saw was that William was attracted, at some level, to women who could provide a stable home life and children. This image must have stuck with her. She could not really trust him after that.
I think the whole tragedy stemmed from that. I've been pondering in other posts how William waits for women to make the first move, and how he may have been waiting for Julia to invite him to Buffalo so he could propose to her. Meanwhile, Julia had not gotten whatever reassurance she needed after months of dating William (I think it comes down to this: she needed a proposal, but again, William somehow needed to be cued to do this).
So in Buffalo, hearing little from William, Julia assumed he was finding another Enid: so she sought comfort in Darcy's arms. How shocked she must have been during Buffalo Shuffle when William showed up on her doorstep months later, out of nowhere, and wanted to renew their relationship. From William's point of view, it was his first opportunity: he had FINALLY been invited (thanks to the murder).
Then when Julia returned to Toronto, she discovered William was still stubbornly single. She doesn't know quite what to make of it. She flutters around the edge of it and tries to find out, but she's already committed to Darcy. William, also, will not interfere with the engagement, since he thinks that's what Julia wants. He just schmumps around being a martyr.
Then along comes Anna, who can definitively tell Julia that William chose her over another willing and beautiful woman that loved him - that his heart belonged to Julia. You can practically see brakes screeching to a halt in Julia's face as she realizes she's made a terrible mistake, and yet there is nothing she can do. She must go through with her commitment to Darcy. After all, William has said nothing to her to offer her an alternative course.
What a nightmare!
And then, on the eve of her wedding, to discover that William had been trying to propose to her after all! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHH! Angst-o-rama! All season we've been watching William deal with the fact he lost the love of his life. Now Julia knows she lost the love of hers, too. And she's about to walk down the aisle with Mr. Second Choice. She asks William to stop the wedding if he still loves her...AND HE DOESN'T SHOW UP!!!! Julia must have been depressed as hell during her honeymoon.
No wonder she felt a calling to go into psychiatry. This is messed up! Yet apparently Julia keeps taking the temperature of the situation after her marriage because by the time of Murdoch in Toyland, she has total faith that William will "move Heaven and Earth" to find her! And two episodes later she's ready to take a leap of faith that William will take her back - potentially as a Divorcee!
The last thing I wanted to point out is how William seems to have come out of the ordeal the better communicator, at least in relationship terms. During Season 4 he is still trying to magically communicate with over-exaggerated eye contact:

But in Seasons 6-7 William can tell Julia he loves her, tell a public courthouse directly he loves her, tell Julia directly how beautiful she is: this is all probably countermeasures against what led up to Buffalo. (lol, this must have made Julia's rejection of his proposal even more of a stab in the heart - look how hard he's been working here!). Julia, on the other hand, has been much more nervous about directly expressing her feelings. Has she even ever told William she thinks he's a studmuffin besides offering up how determined she is for some liplock? It seems to me that someone else is over-relying on psychic!eyes now. >.> Hopefully that doesn't turn out for her the way it turned out for poor William. I think there's some insecurity about his appearance underlying all that meticulous grooming: he could use a compliment or two.
