#fanningself ITA, that is the height of seductiveness, and we need to see Julia in that outfit ASAP! Moreover, I want to wear this. Every day. Even though I'd probably need a made to get into it and an expensive laundry service to keep it clean. Also I'm glad they are bringing up Art Nouveau: I so wanted that to be all theme-y in the wedding, but it doesn't look like that will happen. Vogue - THE LEGALLY BLOND BIBLE! - existed in 1900!!!! Though Godey's Lady's Book was probably the Bible then.

Actually the content of Godey's Lady's Book (which ceased production in 1898, so it can't be the Edwardian Bible Vogue) seems indicative of what was going on in the "domestic sphere" in the late 19th century. I shall quote Wikipedia here:
I see: interest in fashion, patterns for sewing at home, piano music, and a vibrant interest in literature.
By the way this interest in literature, and the popular culture of the day (famous singers, light opera, theater, vaudeville, dancers...) is extremely prominent in a memoir I'm reading about San Francisco that covers the MM period. In the US there was a clear streak of "New York envy", but I think that was displaced Euro Envy. But interestingly, when the woman who wrote the memoir actually went to England to be introduced to society (she was actually introduced to Queen Victoria!), she found everything frightfully shabby compared to the splendor of the American nouveau riche palaces! The gilded age is just on the horizon.
Anyway, this post is for people who wonder what folks did with their evenings before there was TV and the Internet. Before many people had phones or even electric lighting. Getting out of the house and pub crawling was also popular. But when you had to stay at home and entertain yourselves, it was all about sewing, reading stories out loud (or Bible stuff, I guess), and music around the piano.

MM hasn't dealt nearly enough with the Pre-Raphaelite, Art Nouveau, Decadence, Fauves, any of the new aesthetics besides that brush with Mrs. Pendrick's bohemianism. They should really do more of this as a contrast to the staid, middle class bureaucratism that William symbolizes.

(Or that's what I tell my husband!) Yes, more art nouveau is a wonderful thing! Beautiful ladies doing shocking things that shock our dear boys. Giggle worthy!
