So here I am, trying to have "a life" while waiting for S8 to start (and also trying not to wish away my days until October) but lately, even reading the Toronto Star make me think of past MM episodes. For instance, just these past few weeks these stories showed up in the paper: "TTC tunnel-boring machine deal falls through...." - remember the screwing machine of the mole-men last season? But I don't think the screwing machine of 1901 had a name. Presently, the four (count 'em, 4) screwing machines in 2014 Toronto are called Holey, Moley, Yorkie and Torkie. Seriously, there was a contest to name them a few years ago. (Hey CC, see !! ...I said screwing machines 4 X in this post!!! ) ALSO, "Nude beach Hanlan’s Point is all that’s good about Toronto": "Hanlan’s Point, the clothing-optional beach on Toronto Island, is the barest expression of freedom we have and the kind of openness good cities provide." - Yay, JULIA!!! She was 100 years before her time! Ok, she had some friends with her at the time but I don't know who they were and she's my hero, so YAY Julia!!! If anyone else can add to the examples feel free to add to this thread. I will keep my eyes and ears open to the news. If nothing else, it helps me to focus on something other than Rob Ford's daily side-shows.

Maybe not 100 years though! I just saw that episode again and it made me laugh knowing that Hanlon's Point has a 'naturist' beach. Do you remember an article from years ago when city council was debating whether or not nude bathing was legal? There was a (modest) picture of a nude woman on the shore. The legal debate was: "it is fine to be nude on this stretch of beach, but is it legal to enter the water?" As I recall, the debate lasted quite some time but the right to skinny-dip was ultimately upheld. Good thing...there are people all over Ontario (and every other jurisdiction) breaking the law otherwise!

The first two sound like George named them and the other like Brax did. If Murdoch had named them they would have been digging machine #1, digging machine #2, digging machine #3 and I think you might be able to guess the last one....it's digging machine #4, just in case you were lost.

Good thing...there are people all over Ontario (and every other jurisdiction) breaking the law otherwise! I guess it has been "clothing optional" for a long time but to be honest I'd forgotten about that until I saw the article in the paper recently. It was about young lifeguards being assigned to such a beach for the first time. Any thoughts of Baywatch Toronto were soon dashed I think when most of the birthday suits they got to see were belonged to seniors. Luckily the MM writer's did NOT forget so we had Julia and her university friends swimming sans clothing in the 1800's! I don't recall the article you mention but I would have LOVED to have heard city council debate why it's ok to lie on the beach nude but not ok go in the water!! Maybe that thinking was from the same folk in Ontario who, until recent years said we couldn't walk in public with a drink in our hand? So that must mean there was a point in time when we could be nude on the beach and we could walk across the beach and enter the water BUT not with a drink in our hand? I love Ontario!

That's Ontario for you...and enigma wrapped up in a conundrum. Do you remember the girl who raised a ruckus because she wanted equal rights for women...to go topless? She made a point of walking around downtown Guelph until she got arrested for public indecency then proceeded to ask the courts why it was fine for a man to walk the town topless but not a woman. Sort of a modern-day Julia to my way of thinking.

(rofl)You had me laughing out loud on this one. Got me thinking of Tour de Murdoch when Emily discovered the 4th blood type and Murdoch & George made her change it from AB to D... Emily would have had good names for the boring machines. Let's face it, anything is better than Yorkie and Torkie!

Sort of a modern-day Julia to my way of thinking. Oh I do remember her adventure very well. I was working in Guelph at the time. As I recall her point at the time, was that it was an extemly hot & humid day and many guys were walking around with their shirts off. She figured why do women have to swelter in tops in those conditions while the men can remove clothing to help cool off --- so she did likewise. goose/gander. You're right, university student Julia would probably have had the same thoughts.

Thought you might like to know that a group of mostly American students in Japan (8th graders) had a spirited discussion about Rob Ford in my US History class. Some couldn't understand why he still had his job, while others thought he was awesome. It was a wonderful discussion about justice, politics, and public opinion/perception. One of my favorite moments from this past year!

One of my favorite moments from this past year! Very interesting. I imagine that's the best approach in discussing something like the Toronto Mayor situation with young people ie: let them discuss/hear the pros and cons and see all sides of an issue. I love how the discussion opened up into those different areas. I bet the kids loved it too.

You Canadians are making the US look like a bunch of prudes now. I've heard that comment before. The U.S.'s Puritan beginnings at play, perhaps?
