This isn't a TV show, it's a movie. This is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Though it's set in a different time period as MM, I noticed it has many similarities. It is, of course, a police/detective story in a historical setting. The thing that most fascinated me about L.A. Confidential when it came out is that it has complex plot, but that plot is very tight, almost mechanically executed. When the movie first came out, I kept going to see it in the theater to try to keep track of the various plot threads. I found myself trying to chart it out. This was probably my first "fan" engagement experience, even though I would have regarded myself more of a sci fi/comic book/anime type of geek when I was young.
There are some other similarities to note. Guys and gals in stylin' historic outfits. That vaguely symbolic/surrealistic feel that I can't quite put my finger on, but it's very story-like and the opposite of shaky-camera realism. The major characters are all facing challenges to their sense of integrity, and at least one is just a little too moral.
Also, apparently L.A. Confidential withstands many rewatchings!
Ever hear that old chestnut about how every boyfriend resembles your previous one, and ultimately resembles your father in some way? I'm wondering if part of the instant attraction of MM was that aspects of it vaguely reminded me of L.A. Confidential.

Ever hear that old chestnut about how every boyfriend resembles your previous one, and ultimately resembles your father in some way? I'm wondering if part of the instant attraction of MM was that aspects of it vaguely reminded me of L.A. Confidential. I think there's a lot to be said things resembling previous experiences. My first fandom was a British military police drama called Red Cap, and the lead character was someone who didn't exactly fit the mold and got into quite a bit of trouble. The lead was a female, and an outsider, just like William, and like MM it featured a very strong ensemble cast, and all were indispensable to the show. Needless to say, I think there were a lot of similarities between this show and MM, and even though this show has been gone for 10 years now, I still think fondly of it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Cap_(TV_series) www.bbc.co.uk/drama/redcap/Unfortunately, unlike MM, the series was left on a cliffhanger, and wasn't renewed for a third season, even though ratings were excellent. I'll never know if it was true, but someone who stated they worked on the show got on our forum, and told us that the BBC had told them there would be another season, and then changed their mind just before production was to start on season 3. He apologized, and said they would never have ended it the way they did if they knew the show wouldn't be renewed. He also stated that it was more than likely politically motivated as it was a military drama and the Iraq/Afghan wars were in full swing at that time (2004). Unfortunately, the show was never released on dvd either, so all I have are quickly aging VHS cassettes for which I don't have a VCR anymore. Thankfully, MM has been proving to be a more positive experience.

I think I've heard of Red Cap! It must have left some general fandom tracks/legend! Though MM does end after 8 seasons it will be the same "shotgun wedding" and divorce for both of us.

Who says MM is ending after 8 seasons? Whilst it wouldn't surprise me nothing has actually been said. The cast so far are still enjoying the show so as long as CBC is game it could go to 10 seasons. Let's face it the fan base is still growing, it's just started being shown on a free channel that everyone can get in Britain, there's over 60 million potential viewers right there and a British company is one of the primary funders.

No one has said it, but the reason it wouldn't surprise anyone is the marriage does feel like natural closure. And that's kind of depressing for people who just discovered MM in the US because of its appearance on Netflix or Ovation. That's why I have mixed feelings about the marriage. It could cut the show off at the knees by creating "natural closure" right when the fan base is growing! But I do think the problem could be solved by separating William and Julia somehow. Don't kill me.
