I had a coworker who decided to combine his name with hers to symbolize a new union. But that's not common. Another coworker decided that they would just get a new name altogether, and as for me, legally I go by both maiden and married names. I just don't feel comfortable in saying that the person I was for 34 years ceased to exist on my wedding day. But, it was important to my husband-so we compromised. But, I'm Ms. HisLastName at school. But that's a modern thing, so I'm not for a moment saying that Julia would do likewise. William is the most traditional modern man going. He'll be fine with Julia keeping her name, partly because she did while married to Darcy and partly because he respects all her accomplishments as Dr. Ogden. I've always thought it very cute the way they address each other as 'detective' and 'doctor'. For the record I went with Mrs. Hislastname when I got married. It wasn't an improvement over my maiden name. I still always had to spell it .

I think she'll keep Dr. Ogden professionally, and Mrs. Murdoch privately. In more modern times, I think it's possible that she would have hyphenated. Maybe. I should point out that hyphenated names are not as modern as you might think. You can find them dating back quite a ways. So Ogden-Murdoch isn't impossible. That said, I still think she'd be called Dr. Ogden professionally, and by the good lads at Station 4, probably out of affection, and habit. But 'officially' or in private, it'd be Mrs. Julia / Mrs William Murdoch.

In my profession, it is customary for a woman to continue to use the name associated with her career. If she built a reputation as Dr. LastNameofFirstHusband, she will keep that for the entirety of her professional life. In more recent times many women have chosen to go their professional names all the time except for one occasion--at the pediatrician's office. Several of my friends sait that was the only place they were "Mrs. FatherofhteChild'sName.
As for William and Julia, I do not believe that William would have a problem with Julia using Dr. Ogden in her work and on some public occasions, but I think he would want her to be addressed as Mrs. Murdoch in social settings. After all he has been waiting to be married his entire life and although there is some of that "she is mine," to it in a possessive way but for William it would be, "I'm the luckiest man alive. This wonderful woman consented to share her life with me."
