In ballroom dancing the man always leads, that's why William suggested that Julia let him lead. The man is always moving forwards and the woman moving backwards, it makes sense for the man to lead, it's very difficult to lead when moving backwards, I've tried it with my other half who isn't a dancer. I know now, it's not a good example to illustrate my point but I don't change my mind about William keeping the tie. Okay now I'm cracking up, because I got a vision of William insisting on keeping the tie on (with everything else coming off) during the honeymoon night. Now I think we have 2 opposite meanings of tie going on: 1) The tie that gets untied to "unleash" William. 2) The tie that is some sort of phallic totem, which William must retain.

I agree about the tie, I suspect it keeps a lid on all the 'out of William' experiences. Seems they only happen if he isn't wearing a tie. I do not re ally understand why the tie is so important especially when I know it will end up on the floor. So I guess the bondage scenario is out...

I know you could argue for #2 in lots of instances, but regarding William, I think it's #1. I'm convinced that the tie is the keeper of "proper William", and when it's off, you get as Talbottrail called them "out of William experiences".

Temple of the Sacred Unbound Tie? IMHO the Out of William experiences are entirely linked to the presence of the homburg, but then again the Cult of the Magic Homburg is my personal cult, so I'm biased in that respect. But I do think Julia is preoccupied with the tie - probably for multiple reasons. When the tie is on the shirt stays on and buttoned up, it holds everything together and doesn't allow for things to go further than kissing. Maybe it wouldn't make a difference these days but in Victorian/Edwardian times I'm sure they couldn't get past that.

This gives Brackenreid's comment about William being the "most buttoned up guy you ever saw" a whole new meaning! In other news, I noted Ruby went shopping for Julia's trousseau in The Kissing Bandit. So much of the new "fashion plate" Julia in Season 5-7 may have come from Ruby's shopping trips!

That could lead to a thermonuclear chain reaction.
