I'm wondering what Slugger Jackson's 'old lady' would think of him buying a car with the bro's. I think everyone's forgotten that he was married when first introduced. Say what??? That never even hit my radar! What episode was that? Slugger is married. SotWS pt1 when he punched the Inspector.

But I doubt they have any interesting mysteries coming up this season. This is what I don't get. Why do you doubt it? We've been told this season is 10% darker. We've told the writers "pulled the trigger" on the wedding so they can get back to the mysteries. So what is the basis of all this doubt? It might be pointless for the writers to even try to please nonshippers if the least bit of indication of romantic life is enough to signal "shipper apocalypse".

Poor Henry! He always gets the short end of the stick. Except when it comes to women. That Emily thing was an anomaly. Because Emily is a sapphist. Henry is pretty fast with women and he looks very confident around the middle/upper class ladies. That "bit of fluff" he took to the ball didn't look like a factory girl to me .

The question is whether they have enough time to get to true mysteries with all the shipper appreciation and fan service they want to do this season. We are already in the 6th ep and that is appreciating another group of fans. We have the CrabtreeMania, the Toronto Girl Problem and I think a couple more. It's not just about Jilliam and the fact that they are married doesn't mean it's over for them. I don't doubt that they will try and return to mysteries but they may not have the time to get to it this season by the time they do all the things they want to do. Hopefully, they will eventually get there.

I don't doubt that they will try and return to mysteries but they may not have the time to get to it this season by the time they do all the things they want to do. Hopefully, they will eventually get there. First, if you subtract the Waterfront episodes, not all the episodes this season were soaked up by fan service. We don't know that the future ones will be, either. You are going by the titles. However, because of the suffragette subject matter, those titles could be misleading. For all you know, the episode next week could be about shutting the door on the fan service thing. Of course the fact that William and Julia are married doesn't mean Julia will now disappear. Julia is also a main character of the show. As Talbotrail pointed out, the mysteries aren't very interesting unless interesting characters solve them, and William's relationship with Julia adds to his interest for many fans, if not for you in particular. But what should end around now is the *shipper fan service* - jokes aimed at the shipper fandom, episodes centered on the relationship with the mystery built around that. If you want Murdoch Mysteries without Julia in it...you were watching the wrong show from episode one. I'm not sure what "all the other things they want to do" are. The honeymoon is over. Literally. What else are you worried about? Domestic bedroom scenes? William taking out the garbage? Too much political commentary? (i.e. the whole suffragette storyline). If it's the last one - was it okay to have, say, themes about Irish vs. Protestants or anti-Catholic prejudice - but not okay too cover the suffragettes because it would feature too much Julia? Was showing Julia in the morgue okay, but Julia on the picket line not okay?

</div>That's been there for a long time...not just since the 100th. I'm sticking with my bone stein and morgue label. Emily would be proud. And I approve!

I strongly disagree here. I think fans have become pickier, and not every show is perfect - especially when MM suddenly had to crank out 18 episodes instead of 13. If you ask some fans, the season 5 was the most terrible season ever because it lacked the William-Julia dynamic. If you ask some fans, Season 1 was terrible because the show hadn't found focus yet and Yannick was still futzing around with William's character - but other fans think Season 1 was the height of MM! It's quite normal to think a particular season "sucked" if it's not delivering what you personally want: but if the show remains popular, and you are in the minority, maybe the show doesn't actually "suck" that hard after all? Maybe it's you that have gotten to picky? I think the main change between Season 4 and Season 5 was production values: the production values got BETTER - therefore MM lost it's dark, gritty look. (And characters became less orange). Unless you want to blame Peter Mitchell, who got on board in SEASON FOUR, there is no substantial shift in creative team or philosophy. There is only a screaming fanbase demanding that the Jilliam arc be "tied up" with a wedding. Well, the writers gave us that wedding. And they surrounded it was a general celebration of the fans, which I think is pretty nifty. I don't see that as cause to pronounce "Murdoch has been really stupid for a long time now". O RLY? I seem to remember people being pretty pleased with the Season 7 eps, with just a few trip ups: keystone kops on Night Train to Kingston, some poor editing that kept the Jilliam arc a surprise, and the anti-climax on the Gillies storyline. But again this is NITPICKING. Are we going to ignore everything that was well done about season 7 and declare the whole season "stupid" because we didn't like this thing or that? MM is a mature show: it has settled into a formula. In some ways this makes MM a BETTER show because the formula is safe, and it delivers a good show (that means a good MYSTERY, too). But the formula is also predictable, so for longterm fans it might start to look like the show is getting "boring" - and when it's followed by a spate of self-parody eps, I can see how it can look like MM is tying up it's loose ends and drawing to a close. But the other way to look at it is the MM writers themselves understand the dynamics between formula and staying fresh. They also understood how the weight of the shipper arc was dragging the show down: they needed to tie up that storyline to MOVE ON. But they didn't want to dis the shipper fandom in the process: they (wisely, IMHO) chose to say "thanks for bringing MM to this point" with a heap load of fan service. So the very things that are causing everyone to wring their hands and declare MM dead are the things that I see as signs of its renewal and rebirth. Let the Jilliam Triumphalism arc end with blessings and with dignity. The deed is now done. The fans not only got what they wanted on the show, they got RECOGNIZED by the show. They can't ask for more. Now it's the non-shipper turn. Just be patient and enjoy where the season takes us. Ps. If the season takes us to CBC provoking high-pitched Gemily, you might be able to convert me. After reading the pages and pages of serious debate I think everybody has made valid points. Even moi, the shipper queen, is ready for Murdoch to get back to what he does best...use/develop cutting edge forensic techniques, rely on his powers of observation and fill up the chalkboard to figure out whodunit. I actually loved S7 because it was light and funny with some good mysteries thrown in. Yes there was the odd dud, but every season has at least one or two. S8 has had a lot of character sub-plots to wrap up in a short time, leaving less time for the mystery per episode. I think the marriage now gives the writers a chance to have Julia and Emily pursue the more social issues of the time, specifically the suffragette movement, leaving William and the lads at SH4 to solve murders. I have to agree that the mysteries so far in S8 have been generally rather poorly done. PM was saying all summer that S8 will be darker. Ok, time to show us. I hope this next ep gives the MAS a stellar performance from William worthy of being admired. (Would also be happy to have a shot of Jealous!Julia's face noting the admiring horde.) *cannot abandon shipper heart* I totally agree with this. I'm totally ready for the return of alpha!Brax, alpha!George, and of course alpha!William. Oh, and of course, mysteries.

CBC needs to stay out of these shippy stuff. It will eventually result in plotting fans against eachother. It seems this is shipper times and I don't blame them for trying for Gemily. Most of the Gemily shippers threw their weight behind Jilliam to help sail that ship and now that the goal has been achieved they want their own ship to sail. Not sure what the producers and sponsors plan to do about that but once you get into favoring one child it will be unfair not to give the other something. And then there's the George/Henry ship also simmering away on the back burner. There's no end to the shipping . I have always maintained that when they decide George is old enough to have a regular love, they should give him Edna. She is the one that pushes the right buttons with him not Emily or Tess or any other woman I have seen him with. Much as I hate to admit it I think I agree with this. I'm not an Edna fan but she does seem to bring out the best in George. Many fans would like to see George with Tess but she just brings out the silly side of him and it's time he grew up. It's not that I'm pro-Edna specifically, I'm going to like any woman that makes George grow up, and George is a man around Edna! I think Emily and George would make great friends, but not lovers. I'd rather not see Emily shipped this season at all either (was it LoveMondays?). Let's just develop her character.

Completely agree here, but I doubt it's enough to satisfy the non-shippers. I think all 'sides' agree that character development is important but the non-shippers would add that it can't be at the expense of the mystery. But if you don't have 'characters' solving the mystery what's the point in watching? There are enough shows out there where the supposed characters are so uninteresting it's not worth the bother. They may as well wear bags over their heads and talk in monotone if they're not going to have some interesting quirks etc. Surely it's not just about the mystery but also the way the interesting characters solve the mystery. Completely agree. I enjoy the mysteries, but I don't spend hours discussing them because they are for the part, resolved at the end of each episode. There may be a nitpick issue or two, but other than that, that's it. I do spend hours discussing 'ships and other character traits because they're not so easily or neatly packaged, and there's much to infer and speculate upon. I enjoy speculation and inferring. I think it's necessary that the show has a bit of romance, humor, drama, mystery-but in balance. Even though I'm a shipper, the last two episodes have not been in balance, but those arcs are done now, and hopefully, the show will (and I believe it will) restore the balance. MM is a better show when all aspects are in balance. Plus, hopefully this means the return of alpha!SH4. At least I hope so-they're so freakin' hot.

Yep-did Brax' toothache ever solve a mystery? No, but it was an insight into the man and is one of the things I love about the show-it makes me more interested in the characters, so that when they are solving mysteries, I'm that much more invested.

That's been my feeling all along about Gemily. They are so much fun coming up with their ideas like bicycle pizza delivery but I don't buy the romance. It feels forced. Let's leave WednesdayAadams!Emily behind and explore KickAss!Emily and maybe Saffist!Emily. I think I'll like her much better.
