"Again, a man with sexual desires, ready to break over every bound and find unlawful gratification, should choose a woman somewhat deficient in this regard, cold and indifferent, lest his children should all be libertines and harlots. Or, if he care but little for the opposite sex, and have but little passion, he should marry a woman of strong passion, not a harlot, but one who knows what it is to wrestle with a sexual desire, which clamors for indulgence. " (p.95-96) Oh, my. It's a miracle they managed to reproduce at all.

Or, there were a lot of freaky people like the Brackenreids and Murdochs around. You know, sinful, depraved folk who clearly did not take the good reverend's advice to heart. Thank god.

Well. I can pretty much imagine what coin Julia would pay that attitude back in...

Now let's say William has read something like this when preparing for his marriage to Liza in "How Good Catholic Men Prepare for Marriage"...he probably falls into that second category since, though he might have strong desires, he certainly struggles with his "dark places". So he's looking for a woman "of strong passion". But how do you find a woman that expresses such in Victorian times, but is yet, clearly, "not a harlot"? Tricky one, that.

Well. I can pretty much imagine what coin Julia would pay that attitude back in... I think she'll be paying it to William in a wonderful role reversal! Of course, he'll be repaying her in her own coin. Not that she has a problem with that.

If you really think about it, though, William is the one who is having a difficult time "breaking into the harness of passion". Not that he's not passionate - just in terms of finding the right outlet for his passions.

The first time or two may be awkward, but Julia will handle is subtly and respectively, plus he's a quick study. It won't be long at all until he finds the right outlet!

Given how intrigued he was with Sally Pendrick, I'm sure William is eager to explore the whole library here!
