This is just to bring out the idea that Julia could be a more interesting character, and more useful to William, if she started the world's first private CSI lab. She could have her own morgue and lab again as well as do psych profiling. She could also contract with the Pinkertons, American law enforcement, Canadian "national security", etc. This practice would give William something to fall back on and more leverage in his own career. He and Julia can do joint lectures as early forensics professionals. At such lectures who would be ignored first - Julia as a woman or William because he has no college degree? Anyway - vote here for Julia's CSI lab!

I'm down with this idea if it means we get geeky!Julia back. Plus, I don't have a better suggestion myself...

A fascinating idea. But keep in mind that in 1902, very, very, VERY few people had college degrees of any kind.
Most people went to school (if they went to school at all), and then went straight to work.
College degrees were for doctors, lawyers, and scientists. None of that Bachelor of Arts in Beatleology from Liverpool University like we have today.

Still, a college degree would be an important "sales tool" for a new venture: especially something that seemed to require the expertise of a doctor/scientist. While a CSI lab that developed within the constabulary might get away with installing their a "man of experience", a private lab would have to approach clients with a brochure of their credentials - at least until they built up a significant portfolio of work. This is where I think Julia's degree might come in handy, no matter what experience William might bring.

In this AU they would have property where a workshop for William and a lab for Julia along with their new house. They would be free to travel the world in order to investigate especially sensitive/difficult cases as well a stay at home with their children (who won't be around for a while) and a nanny to take care of them. I have been toying with the idea of writing a fic along these lines, but can't seem to get started.

I think if the lab is there as a fallback position, William will have more leverage within the police force. Also he can supplement his police income with private investigations, lectures, and perhaps a book on forensic techniques.

I'm not sure that would work because Brackenreid wouldn't want Murdoch working on other cases--Station Four is too busy as it is. I have been toying with this idea for some time, and the brewing controversy about Julia's running for parliament made me think that if the establishment gives Murdoch too hard a time, he may just tell them to take a long walk on a short pier. He said that he could weather whatever came his way, but I think he is underestimating the backlash to women's suffrage. Besides, the city is run by Orangemen and they can't abide a Catholic. He doesn't have to work for the constabulary now and if Julia does go ahead, William just might find it more comfortable to pursue his own interests.

Yeah, I don't know why William puts up with their crap anymore either. But he has invested many years in the Constabulary. Maybe it's some form of "golden handcuffs"? For the show, I don't think it would be the same if William was no longer in the Constabulary. But I would like to see him shake things up a little somehow. I don't think he should always just accept being shafted because he's a Catholic. I think he should empower himself and put the Powers That Be into a bind for a change. One way to do this is for William to be recognized Internationally. Foreign governments might grant him special commendations or awards, etc.

Along those lines ----I was just thinking, could Julia become a Chief Coroner? Emily could remain as Coroner for the Toronto constabularies but Julia could hold the Office of Chief Coroner? I don't think they're elected officials here, are they? Will have to research that for 1900's. Actually, now that I think about it,pretty sure I was looking that up last summer. We don't have Medical Examiner's in Ontario but we do have Coroner's inquests. It might pit her against the police (read: Brackenreid/William) occasionally.

The problem with this is it doesn't make Julia any more relevant to the storylines. How many times would the Coroner be involved in a case?

Coroners are appointed through the Ministry of Community Safety. Who they would have been appointed by in the early 1900s, I don't know....Government structure has changed and grown unmeasurably........I kind of suspect Julia being a Chief Coroner would have the same issues as her being a profiler.....a Chief Coroner would be involved at the inquest level which would be rather dull television....also the Coroner's Court doesn't deal with criminal cases usually as they'd duplicate what the Criminal Court does.......
