Bring on the Xena nostalgia as well! Yes! I have happy memories of watching Xena with my then very young daughter! We also love Mary Walsh's take on Xena as a Warrior Princess who ambushes politicians! Am I the only person that never saw one episode of Xena??

Xena was a stupid show, but she was such a (literally) kickass role model for women that the show left a bigger cultural footprint than its viewership. The female Sec'y of State at the time, Madelaine Albright, declared Xena her role model. Also the first new planet to be discovered after Pluto was temporarily called Planet Xena.

Bring on the Xena nostalgia as well! *waves at Eus * Hope you don't feel ignored! It's very slow for me to type, and I was embroiled over Defense of Pirate Ship Lillian! I have to go in a minute, but wanted to acknowledge your presence.

The pilot was enough for me. It probably says all you need to know about American culture that we almost had a planet Xena. XD I thought Xena was better than Hercules. btw, both were imported from New Zealand. For a short while the US watched many imported scripted shows.

...veritable black hole of popular culture, here...... Wow, you probably miss a lot of references, then. These days people are getting less and less of a "traditional" education, so their intertextuality has been taken over by common knowledge of pop culture.

The pilot was enough for me. The trailers were enough for me!! It took some time to get into, but it was groundbreaking for a woman's story. Xena was trying to redeem herself for all the people she had killed, but she wasn't whiny about it. And because she had been evil in the past, she usually found herself in a position where she would have to kick a lot of ass without killing anyone else. Because it was ancient Greece, mythic gods and monsters were involved. Gabrielle was the bard recording Xena's adventures and serving as sidekick. I wasn't particularly impressed by her since she was a goody-goody. But Xena was teaching her the evil ways of the world (while trying not to kill anyone), and eventually it seems the implication they were lovers was confirmed. The underlying idea was cool for such a cheesy show. Also Xena looked awesome. Everyone wanted to be Xena for Halloween.

I'm glad I never wasted my time watching it. I'm not into fantasy.

There was something about a woman having the murder-redemption quest which was quite intriguing, though. Or I just had bad taste back then. I was watching High Tide around the same time, IIRC. XD

XD Never saw High Tide and by the looks of it I don't want to. I wouldn't mind seeing Gold. Funnily enough my husband remembers Gold and I had never heard of it before MM.
