I was watching High Tide around the same time, IIRC,. XD Never saw High Tide and by the looks of it I don't want to. I wouldn't mind seeing Gold. High Tide was laughably terrible. It still amazes me Yannick Bisson on MM is the same person. It had to be pointed out to me. I still need to get my hands on Gold, too.

A show about Canadians in the New Zealand gold rush (I didn't even realize there'd been a NZ gold rush...) Not sure what the format was/ It was aired around 1992 I believe.

High Tide was laughably terrible. lthere's only so much shirtless yannick can do to salvage a show. Imagine Yannick trying to talk in a surfer dude way but overdoing it or getting it wrong somehow. And only talking about stereotyped thinks that make women utterly uninterested in guys. Actually the show was being turned into a buddy cop show in the third season, and Yannick did improve as an actor once he didn't have to fake being an empty-headed surfer dude anymore. But still - one of the dumbest shows ever made. It gives me a sort of kick to know I've seen Yannick's transformation as an actor in real time.

No I can only see about 3 lines on my Kindle. After that I'm typing blind on very tiny keys that are easy to cross-hit. Thank you for preserving that for posterity before I could come home and edit.

You're welcome.

Yes! I have happy memories of watching Xena with my then very young daughter! We also love Mary Walsh's take on Xena as a Warrior Princess who ambushes politicians! Am I the only person that never saw one episode of Xena?? Nope.

The trailers were enough for me!! It took some time to get into, but it was groundbreaking for a woman's story. Xena was trying to redeem herself for all the people she had killed, but she wasn't whiny about it. And because she had been evil in the past, she usually found herself in a position where she would have to kick a lot of ass without killing anyone else. Because it was ancient Greece, mythic gods and monsters were involved. Gabrielle was the bard recording Xena's adventures and serving as sidekick. I wasn't particularly impressed by her since she was a goody-goody. But Xena was teaching her the evil ways of the world (while trying not to kill anyone), and eventually it seems the implication they were lovers was confirmed. The underlying idea was cool for such a cheesy show. Also Xena looked awesome. Everyone wanted to be Xena for Halloween. My daughter liked it because she was strong and independent, yet, as you say, not a killer. Neither of us caught on to the lesbian subtext for a long time because we were naive at the time. Later experience would change that, when one of my closest friends came out to us. Yes the show was cheesy, but perfect for its late Saturday afternoon time slot. That said, I really don't know how I'd feel watching it now. Probably just nostalgic.

I really enjoyed it - perhaps "stupid" was the wrong term (I tired and getting frustrated with kindle-typing at the time). "Cheesy" is a better term! Or "kitsch"? The mythology was fun, and Xena looked great in her leather get-up as she kicked ass all over the Ancient World. She did make a great role model for women.

Speaking of late Saturday afternoon, it would be about Xena time now!
