Greetings Murdochians. Well well, what a turn up for the books...... Hodge a killer...... Giles a nancing nelly....... thats why we love this show is it not??? Proof that anything can happen in Murdochland. I,m just waiting for Brackenreid to get smashed on his favourite tipple and make an impropper pass at Dr Grace!! LOL... Now that i would LOVE to see!!! I must say, iff the crime rate is as bad now as it was in Murdochs time, dear lord, i,m surprised there,s anyone left alive in Toronto!!!! This show just keeps getting better, slicker and more cooler as the series goes on. I,m sooooo looking forward to season 9. but being behind in England, i daresay i,ll keep popping back to you good folks on the site to get my fill. Apologies for the nancing nelly remark iff i offended anyone, just keeping in character with the show. Good evening to you all, Victoriangentleman must get ready for another night shift..... bloody ell!!!!!!

Brax going after Emily? Naaaaw, Margaret has him good and proper. The general consensus is is "What Lies Buried" is certainly by far the best episode of this season and for many of us it's in the top 5 episodes of the series.

A few people were heartbroken over Hodge. DeskSgtHogdge actually changed her screen name in memorium!
I agree that this was an outstanding episode that got back to the roots of what MM is supposed to be about -- the mysteries! They still got character chops in like William building his gadget and Brackenreid's old nickname. But it seemed like a lot of fat was cut out. There was less DISNEYFICATION and more EDGINESS - even if it was conducted in MM format/style. *raises pirate fag of crumpetgate*

Have to admit this is definitely in my top 5, possibly top 3, episodes. Absolutely brilliant!

Cheers Me too lizmc. I was so upset that William pushed to get the truth. I wonder if this is why he told Fr. Keegan he wished he'd shared with him that sometimes the greater good must take precedence.

Cheers I did too. The whole episode was chock a block full of "no way!" moments. It truly was old school Murdoch at its best. I think it was Paul Aitken who was talking about their desire to contain the entire story within the stationhouse. It actually made the storyline feel almost like you were watching a play, IMO. Murdoch and Giles were brilliant. They each had to take their measure of the other man and decide whether or not to admit to their deepest, darkest, career-ending truth. I was on the edge of my seat only to end up despondent over Hodge. I think I watched the episode 4 or 5 times the night it aired.

I just read that little news bit about the possibility of Fr. Keegan as a returning character. I think that might be a very good idea. We've talked about all the extra characters this season as possibly being part of the reason for this season's lackluster mystery plots, but I think there are some really good avenues with Fr. Keegan to explore the heart of MM, William. As that arc opens then it would be logical to include Julia as he gains insights, likely with her help.

All the other extra characters from this season can disappear as far as I'm concerned. None of them are very inspiring, except maybe Clara Brett Martin.

Cheers What are your feelings about Hodge's Pub? Will it be great to have advice from an old salt (who really got shafted...) or will that undermine the devastation of what occurred?

Murdoch and Giles were brilliant. They each had to take their measure of the other man and decide whether or not to admit to their deepest, darkest, career-ending truth. I was on the edge of my seat only to end up despondent over Hodge. I think I watched the episode 4 or 5 times the night it aired. One of my favorite TV episodes of all time (and also one that gave me nightmares for a long time) was an episode of the Outer Limits where Wil Wheaton is on a small space craft delivering a Doomsday Device to "the enemy". However, a couple of infiltrators get aboard the ship: Wil's character spends the whole episode in survival mode trying to outwit the infiltrators. He finally reaches his destination and unleashes the Doomsday Device only to find out that the ship was turned around some time in the course of the episode, and he just unleashed Doomsday on Earth. I can't remember whether I read an analysis of this episode or I discussed it with friends in college, but at some point it was conveyed to me that one of the reasons this episode was so effective was that the spaceship was built like a submarine, and the setting was extremely claustrophobic as Wil kept trying to escape the infiltrators and somehow complete his mission. When he releases the Doomsday Device, it's like release from that tiny claustrophobic space. FREE AT LAST! But then - OUCH - you find out Wil just destroyed the Earth. Anyway, the moral is that the most desperate emotions can be squeezed out of cramped submarine-like settings. Limiting the "bottle script" to Station House 4 might have had a similar effect. You might say destroying Hodge was similar to finding out that the Doomsday Device had just been turned on the Earth. EDIT: Well this is interesting. I looked up this episode (it's called "The Light Brigade") - the writer, Brad Wright, is from Toronto. Perhaps this model of story-telling was influential. I certainly found it effective!

While Catholicism is an essential part of William's character, he's going to have to struggle more with the Church to embrace the modern era. The main reason is the Church took a very conservative turn at this time. I think it would make an INCREDIBLE story for William and Father Keegan to genuinely go head to head in official Church business that William can't abide. It would be even juicier if it had something to do with an aspect of the modern world or accepting modern science.

Me too lizmc. I was so upset that William pushed to get the truth. I wonder if this is why he told Fr. Keegan he wished he'd shared with him that sometimes the greater good must take precedence. It wasn't the first time. He pushed to get the truth about Julia's abortion, too. And that wasn't the only other time. He's always pushed for the truth at any cost and now has just been told by the man that taught him truth must prevail that sometimes it's best if it doesn't. Must have been earth shattering for him. However, without the truth at any cost some of the best storylines wouldn't have happened.
