On this day in 1904, the Great Toronto Fire broke out, consuming most of the core of the city. Miraculously, there were no deaths.
From the Toronto Archives, about half way down on this album, there are some great pictures of the devastation: www.flickr.com/photos/torontohistory/sets/72157623794564499/

That is great film footage, considering how old it is. I did not know the fire destroyed such a large area. And from an unattended iron!

Probably next season......this season should be 1903........ This season I noticed(due to the failure of my Manhattan train wreck theory) that the seasons do not necessarily follow the calendar year. In other words, they could work more as a school year: late 1903-early 1904.

I'm pretty sure this season was just 1902, Snacky.......from what I've read, I think the writers intend to continue the year to year pattern.....could be wrong.....

The seasons start approximately 5 months into the year, probably because of the weather at the start of filming. When the seasons were 13 eps long they finished in fall but now they're 18 eps they're going into winter.

Which probably means that, since the Great Fire was in April, if they use it, it will open season 10.......given the expense of mounting a set for it, it would make sense for it to be a two parter......I really hope so, partly because it means we get a series 10......

Peter Mitchell commented on the Great Fire in the last article on TV, eh?: What year will it be in Murdoch’s world when we come back for Season 9? For history it will be 1903, which is the year before the ‘Great Fire of Toronto.’ Is that something you’re working towards? We’re aware of it, but we’re not sure exactly where we’re going to place it. You’re as aware of the numbers and the good feelings for this show as we are and we don’t see a firm end date. As long as people are ambulatory we have a decent chance of making this for awhile. I’m not sure where we will place the Great Fire and the producer on the show with me, Steve Montgomery, would probably kill me the minute I suggest Great Fire. We will get to it.

The main thing I can see for them not using it would be the expense, including trying to find fire appliances to fight it.....I can see them opening with the aftermath of it......however, I'm sure Peter and company will surprise us....

I'm sure expense is the reason he says the producer would probably kill him. The aftermath would be a better place to start, perhaps a murder not connected to the fire but unearthed by it.

An episode about this disaster sounds like a lot of fun.
That's my paltry contribution to this otherwise fascinating thread.

Well, stay tuned, Shangas, because I'm sure we'll keep digging out stuff about it.......I know I will......I actually e-mailed the Toronto Firefighters' Museum to see if they had any record of my great-grandfather.....so far, nothing back.....
