I would definitely think perhaps Jackson now. I didn't know he was also doing Orphan Black. My only hang up would be I've never thought his death would be shocking, but it might be to the casual viewer. I haven't seen Orphan Black this season, but the guy who plays Jackson is the husband of Lulu Lemon Clone and later a Super Soldier. Have to admit I saw one episode of Orphan Black and it bored me stiff.

Depends on how it happened. For instance, what if it was a hostage situation in which Higgins had to make some choice that let George down. Or George had to chose between Edna and someone else? Jackson would be the other choice since he has a regular gig on Orphan Black. I have trouble seeing MM breaking the George/Higgins cycle. I would definitely think perhaps Jackson now. I didn't know he was also doing Orphan Black. My only hang up would be I've never thought his death would be shocking, but it might be to the casual viewer. As of right now, I have no idea who it might be. But, it only needs to be shocking to SH4...

I agree, I'm not keen on any of the main cast leaving. I've just thought. During the last luncheon Lachlan said there were big changes coming in S9. I wonder if the death is Brackenreid and William finally gets his promotion. That would make way for George to become Detective with Henry as his sidekick. Of course George should be out of the force not getting his promotion but this is fiction. I hope this isn't what will happen but who knows.... Didn't we have this exact same conversation about Season 8 after YB said there were big changes coming in Season 8? With a cliffhanger for Inspector B and some teaser photos of George in a suit we tried to figure out who got promoted where. In the end the best we got was George's rumor of promotion at the end of the season, lol...

Not if you just subtracted Emily (and then you also lose the subplot Lillian). But if Emily is staying then we do. Yes my remark about Rebecca being in the morgue was based on the scenario where Emily dies. If Emily doesn't die, then you're right: subplots lying thin on the ground again. Though it's possible that Edna could still be out of the picture.

Well this is all speculation and I don't really like to speculate, I'd rather just see what comes, but after last season I can't help but worry.

Not if you just subtracted Emily (and then you also lose the subplot Lillian). But if Emily is staying then we do. Emily is probably not a dealbreaker - especially if MM's writers have been watching what Shonda Rhimes has gotten away with over the years in terms of "shocking deaths": that's her stock in trade.

A wild William "Mark Twain" Shatner has been spotted! ZOMG! WTF! BBQ! *dies* No, really, I can't tell you how happy this pic makes me. I have to say it: William Shatner looks like Colonial Sanders.

Emily dying would be shocking and it would effect SH4. But, they obviously want to do the scandal thing with her and Lillian, which will effect Emily's career. That could rule Emily out. Though I still don't believe for a second that Lillian will be around after however long in S9, and I'm convinced they'll have a dramatic ending. Sadly, the majority of shows don't have any real respect for lesbian couples, and I doubt even MM will be different in this case. I still think Jackson is the perfect candidate for a shocking death that effects SH4. He's a big enough recurring character to impact the audience.
I have to admit that I'm not happy to hear the Suffragette movement is still going to be a seemingly sizable part of S9. That arc was really boring last season, and it isolated Julia from the action far too much. I'll also not be happy if Rebecca isn't connected to the solving crimes. MM is a crime drama, it is not a period one and it shouldn't have unrelated subplots outside the crimes/main characters relationships. If Rebecca isn't working on the crime of the week, then she has no place on MM. I'm all for adding a black character, but only if it's not at the expense of what MM is - a crime drama. Is Rebecca going to be main cast or just recurring like Jackson, Edna and Lillian?
I'm not bothered if Edna sticks around as the characters relationships have always played a part in MM. And Edna wasn't actually in S8 that much, so it probably won't change in S9 once the husband's murder is solved. Lillian is too wrapped up in the boring Suffragette arc for me to care about her tbh.
Just get Julia back involved in the cases. And don't have an episode without at least one W/J scene. That is what MM used to be about and it's what worked. PM needs to stop messing with what the show is. Though I can see W/J meeting an orphan in the feature length Christmas episode, and that child being one they decide to adopt at some point in S9. It gives relationship focuse to W/J, without needless drama.
If MM can't be what it's supposed to be then it's time to end the show. I liked parts of S8, but a lot of it was moving too far from the feel of the show. I didn't really like S5 that much, and S8 has the same kind of place in my mind.

I agree with everything you said Murdochic.
Lilian annoys me a great deal. She seems to wrapped up in the suffragette movement to think about Emily.
I don't think Emily will be leaving now with what's happening with George. Although after how she was with him I'm not really fussed to be honest.
I must have missed something... Who is Rebecca?
I miss Julia in the morgue. Especially now that they are finally married. She seems like a spare part, to me.

Tanhere posted an interview with the actress on page 6 of this thread. Lillian annoys EVERYONE, except snacky. You nailed it with Julia seeming like a spare part. The entire fandom including facebook and twitter were very unhappy and quite vocally let TPTB know it. Our happy little group was on a serious tear about the marginalization of the female characters and especially the lack of any relationship between W/J that resembled a marriage. Shaftsbury creeps the forums and facebook so when opinions got very heated Peter Mitchell joined our discussion. He admitted that they may have gotten things a bit wrong with S8 so we are very hopeful that S9 will be back on track. Thanks for making this thread "Official". What is up with the attachments? I had an email about it this morning. Does this mean we won't be able to attach fanfics and videos or great tweets from Yannick?

Honestly, I don't know why they made suffragettes a major story line in the first place, it's not like women will get the right to vote during the show's life, it seems so pointless. A couple of episodes where it involves a murder investigation would have been fine but the long arc is really annoying at this point.

A couple of episodes where it involves a murder investigation would have been fine but the long arc is really annoying at this point. Except that the suffragist movement was a key part of the social revolution that has shaped the western world. It would be very odd to have two such forward thinking modern women as Julia and Emily and NOT have them embroiled on the front lines. MM has always done a good job of exposing the mores of the time and exploring the impact of change. We have Brackenreid to act as the voice of the male bastion establishment and William to illustrate how a different attitude can allow progress to work. I have enjoyed the long suffragist arc but the Lillian side plot annoyed the c**p out of me, not because of the sapphist angle but because they were already tackling something really important and that was, IMHO an unnecessary distraction.
