I was more excited about the preview than the ep to be honest! It was my best YESSSSSSS moment of the day! How sad is it that we're excited that squeaky clean Murdoch actually tries a dangerous illicit drug with his physician wife? Well, there was that time they had a joint investigation on the effects of absinthe on the human brain.... They didn't drink enough to affect Julia too much but William suffered. Next week could be very interesting though...

Opium and its derivatives cause sleepiness/drowsiness. Hence 'pipe dreams'. Smoking it sends you to sleep. That's why for centuries, it was used as a painkiller. I found this on etymology online: pipe dream (n.) 1870; the sort of improbable fantasy one has while smoking opium; from pipe (n.1) + dream (n.). Old English pipdream meant "piping." So it's not about sleep, though that does make the "zz" in the title perplexing. Maybe the episode is about some impossible scheme cooked up while on opium that goes horribly wrong, and Murdo has to smoke it to understand?

The juxtaposition is delicious! latchatcha.tumblr.com/image/133847475351

That's why it's been used for centuries as a painkiller. But it also makes you hallucinate to a certain degree (laudanum, especially, so I'm led to believe). So pipe-dream refers to either of them.

How sad is it that we're excited that squeaky clean Murdoch actually tries a dangerous illicit drug with his physician wife? William is so tight-laced that it's exceptionally interesting when he chooses to be bad. That's why it sucks we weren't in on what happened after Julia took William to the pub at the end of The Local Option. Spruce Beer. Really William isn't there a better choice LOL.

I still need to try spruce beer. What does it taste like? I don't like regular beer. On the other hand Ginger Beer tends to taste like Ginger Ale, which is effectively soda!

Hope William and Julia don't smoke with that pipe! The corset experience should have taught them a lesson!

He's a lightweight and doesnt want to lose control unless it's at home after Julia gets ahold of his tie. Nice new avatar!

Took me a while to decide what to use. In the end I like the title the episodes and the pictures so... Makes since to me. The Murdoch Effect is how the show makes us all feel not just the title. The show is SO inventive and creative and speaks to the quality of the writers and producers. I love those attitudes in the picture in the end it seemed like a good choice.

Hadn't looked at it that way before but I think you nailed it!

You mean I'm actually first to the party tonight?
Still processing the episode, but heh, William and Julia getting high and heightened "desires". But only to have William cockblock himself as usual.
And whaddya know, canon states that William was born in in 1863 per the show-aka "water pig". 1983, 1923, and 1863.
