Yup, that's the one......I suppose I did sort of expect it, but didn't want to.......I don't think this is the end of it, though....
Really? I don't see where they could go with it.
Well, it was an era when it was considered very difficult on men to raise a child on their own.....some went the Archie Brooks route and found a woman to marry and raise your kid for you, and some gave the kids up for adoption......
So many thoughts here, and I kept track of them as I viewed the episode.
First of all, how did whatshisface (horrid man-forgot his name), have the legal right to own someone? Slavery was illegal in the British Empire in the early 19th century, and in the US by 1863, and owning someone is slavery. So how does someone in North America own someone in 1903?
How does Julia still have an office at the asylum? I thought she was the coroner again. Or is she both now?
The B plot certainly was the twist, and I have to say, the A plot and B plot were very nicely woven together indeed. The parallel's about the orphaned girl and Roland were well written and provided a nice wrap up to the end of the Roland arc.
Like most of us, I saw that plot coming, but I'm surprised that they ended it so quickly-I thought Julia would hold onto her secret for a few episodes while the weight ate her up on the outside, creating some angst. But, they brought the issue up so quickly and resolved it in a single episode. I must admit I didn't see that coming given how she's been given to keep secrets while struggling to keep them in the past particularly, but maybe this is just another way she's grown.
A very good episode with some nice angst for Snacky should she ever decide to rejoin us.
Well, that episode was heartbreaking I was crying along with Julia and William at the end. I'm sorry we were right about them not being able to keep Roland; they'd proven to be loving parents, but I knew Julia and then William wouldn't be able to deny a father his child. They're too upstanding for that. I only hope they can get through all this together and before the show ends they have the chance to adopt a truly orphaned or unwanted child.
The story of Fen was also sad and I hope she really can be helped to live a happier life through her treatment. So, Julia might still be a part-time psychiatrist at the asylum. Unless she just borrowed the office and was allowed to treat Fen because of her past there. I don't think that office is hers any more because the photographs weren't of William. I like her being an all-rounder in the cases, but like her best as the coroner.
Nice to have Higgins with a meater sized role this week, though Rebecca was very thin on the ground. Freddie was very sweet and I think her and Julia could be good friends, and she can of course be useful on future cases. I also noticed I spoke too soon about Brackenreid not being bigoted any more.
I wasn't too bothered about the mystery in this episode other than how it meshed with the story of Roland and his two fathers. To be honest I thought the wild child was a little over the top. William seemed to have really warmed up to his role as a father only for the son he had come to love to be taken away. There was no doubt, knowing of a decent man deprived of his son, that they would give Roland up. It was heartbreaking and I admit I had tears in my eyes. Helene and Yannick knocked it out of the park last night with wonderfully understated performances.
The last five minutes were heartbreaking. When she met the father and saw he was a good person, there was little doubt as to what would happen.
I must admit to being very torn when Julia met the father......she and William have been growing into parenthood and they will make wonderful parents, but the real father seemed like such a decent man who had so tragically lost his wife and thought he had lost their child, giving Roland back to him was the only option. I hope they maintain contact of some sort........knowing MM's writers, I'm sure we are in for a couple more twists......
I loved the look on Rebecca's face when she gave Julia the post-mortem results. She also seemed torn about whether to point out that the deceased couldn't be Roland's mother, knowing the implications.....I think she knows Julia well enough now to know that Julia would try to find the real parents.....
Yes that was a surprise we were getting used to them being parents. The last few minutes were very upsetting and yes we cried. Julia and William really played the part so so so well. That was such a difficult scene to play and they did it exceptionally good. I hope this is not the end of them having a baby. Please please.
