Such a great episode!! Loved Rebecca doing her own investigating and finding the connection that ultimately lead to solving the case. This was some really nice character development.
It was really interesting to delve into the early research of antibiotics. The first true antibiotic, arsphenamine was synthesized in 1907 but not recognized as a treatment for syphilis until 1909. Ultimately this type of research lead to a Nobel Prize as alluded to by Julia. I had no idea that syphilis and sleeping sickness were so closely related (after a fact).
Love, love, love how William can't find a contractor and Julia's impatience about it. That scene on the sidewalk between W & J over it made me laugh but what was priceless was the way Julia ended the discussion by turning on her heel and saying "Come to my office..." and William follows somewhat sheepishly. Hmmm, a 'standing bath' too!
Julia is going to start lecturing in forensic medicine???!!!!! Woo hoo...we've said for a long time that they will make a fortune through Julia's forensic methods. Nice to see the nod to Dr. Augusta Stowe-Gullen, the first woman to graduate from a Canadian medical school, Victoria College, U of T. She also lectured at the Ontario Medical College for Women. She was a suffragist and was the daughter of Dr. Emily Stowe.
I also really enjoyed this episode because the campus scenes were filmed at my alma mater, the University of Guelph. The interiors were filmed in my faculty buiding, MacDonald Hall. The gorgeous stained glass window on the upper landing of that beautiful staircase underwent a significant restoration and preservation about 10 years ago.
A final question: did Prof. Hempel actually push Sarah Franklin into the river or did she jump because of the emotional weight of his accusations as Rebecca suggested?

Very powerful episode.....I love how Rebecca James is being developed.......Julia lecturing on forensic science could lead in some interesting directions.
I think Sarah's death was suicide.....the folded shawl and the stones in her pockets.....plus her behaviour in regard to the exam and trying to contact MacInnis points to her being in crisis......
No Brackenreid, Crabtree or Higgins......the episode was so tight and well paced, I didn't notice until half way through......

Suicide it is then. I have to agree with you that the episode was so well crafted that I didn't notice their absence either.

I'd forgotten those details by the end of my first viewing too, and was debating whether it was murder or suicide.....the second viewing cleared that up......

I didn't notice their absence either, but as soon as the ep was over, my husband turned to me and said "no Inspector or George this week". It was a good episode, and they weren't necessary, but I don't want to see it continue either. I figured the professor had to be a douche, I just wasn't sure how. It was a nice episode, and I enjoyed it. I'm rolling my eyes at William, the house will never be built, and Julia knows it!

Anyone else thinking they're getting Julia a job at the medical college because she's about to find out she's pregnant, and can't work in the morgue anymore?

Julia being pregnant would be an interesting storyline. As would her having a part-time teaching post in the college.
I have to admit, this episode was very interesting. The first one I think, to concentrate heavily on a secondary character. And also one of the few which doesn't have the entire cast in it.
So do I take it that the girl really did commit suicide in the end? But why? I didn't get that bit. I must be pretty stupid or something...

No, it wasn't easy to catch, but it isn't until the end when Rebecca tells Professor Douchebag that he implied that it was her theories (that he stole, btw and implemented on his own, btw), that led to the death of Mr. McGuinness and he just smirks. Sarah killed herself out of guilt that she was responsible for Mr. McGuinness' death. I know that this was the second episode to not feature Brax, but have we ever had an episode where George wasn't there either?

It was nice to see more of Rebecca and to see her with Nate. Rebecca has nice chemistry with Nate, and she's proving herself to be as industrious as Julia and Emily.
Julia is very proud of her prodigy and I'm sure her and Rebecca will get into more things with Julia being a part-time teacher at Rebecca's medical school. Though how does Julia find the time to be a coroner, part-time doctor at the asylum, and now a part-time teacher. She is a very busy woman.
Julia is getting impatient for his house to be built. William will probably end up building it himself, and she'll have to get involved. I thought it was cute how she looks at him when he's being an excited geek. She loves that part of William.
Brackenreid not in an episode again, that is only the 2nd one he's ever missed. And George has never missed an episode before. I wonder if the actors asked for a little more free time so that's why they are suddenly not in some episodes. It was still a good story and entertaining without them, but the station felt a little weird without their presence. Overall, the episode still felt like old MM.
