Yeah, I just caught that bit on FB, and half the people are still crying over Emily's departure it seems (arghhhh-get over it!). However I agree with you in that the season while well done, is somehow off, and is not the MM we've come to expect. There's no arc, and I'm guessing the show has made a decision to film episodes that don't really have to be played back to back is the biggest culprit here. Shame, really. I think most fans tune in week after week because we're invested in the characters, and when there's no character arc... As for this episode, I'm still at a loss. Pendrick wasn't the only thing manic...I can see where that's what Mitchell and co thought they were going with the episode, but there was so much going on, it's hard to tell what's what. It's left my head spinning. I'm at a loss, and I don't know what I think. I feel like I've been hit by a truck. If TC is leaving, well, there's nothing to be done about it-I get it- you can't force him to remain. His leaving seemed abrupt, but maybe his departure is meant to be a mid-life crisis of sorts, the quintessential man who leaves his wife for the 21 year old secretary. I doubt that this is the last we see of Brax, but the ending just seemed so rushed. I really don't know what to make of all this. Is this going to be a stretch where the show makes us uncomfortable, but eventually takes us to a great place, or is this merely a case of TPTB not wanting to make the show we enjoy anymore and we just need to suck it up and deal? I don't mind angst, but please do something with it, don't just create it to jerk the viewers around and then never follow through with it. You know, kinda what like happened with season 8.I actually have a theory about where this season will end up, and I'm fine with it if that happens, but yeah, it'll be angsty and I hope it's well used. I'll be hanging around for now, because I'm hoping what seems disjointed will eventually come together nicely in retrospect. It's the story arc that shows growth in the characters and keeps us interested. People have already commented about W's lack of growth and religious conflicts which really defined his character in the earlier seasons. I for one don't tune in for the mysteries, I tune in for the characters and they seem to be becoming cardboard cut outs. We rarely see much Jilliam any more, we get more action from George no matter who he's dating at that moment. I couldn't care less about George's romances to be honest I want to see W/J's romance and so do many others. Perhaps we should be saying how much we love George's romances and we don't want to see anything with W/J, perhaps the contrary writers will then give us something! It wasn't so much that there was a lot going on as much as it was just a whirlwind of manic Pendrick and an even more manic "Mr. Hyde". I have to admit that I haven't missed Brax as much as I thought I would. The episodes he's been missing have been well done and I didn't notice he wasn't there until the end. I don't understand what was wrong with the previous one though. You can't afford to alienate viewers that have been with the show years, there won't be enough new viewers to make up the numbers. Perhaps these two eps, which were both a little off the wall though in different ways, shouldn't have been shown back to back.

Is this going to be a stretch where the show makes us uncomfortable, but eventually takes us to a great place...I don't mind angst, but please do something with it, don't just create it to jerk the viewers around and then never follow through with it. You know, kinda what like happened with season 8.That's it in a nutshell. MM DOES push boundaries and that often makes people uncomfortable. I too am ok with that and as you said, so long as it goes somewhere. Right now it does feel like we are being jerked around. The character continuity/story arc issue has been put forth to the writers, front and centre in S8, as a significant part of what makes this show great. They heard us, so I can't imagine them roughing out the season without keeping that in mind. PM has said he likes to see a fairly even mix of light and dark, playful vs angst. That makes a great deal of sense and keeps the show interesting IMO. They've done it incredibly well and there has always been some kind arc or arcs linking them. In this season however, I agree with you FB that we're being jerked around and I know I'm not alone in being unhappy and uncomfortable with it. I said in another thread that we have to be open to change and try to be adaptable but this season is stretching even this die-hard-from- day-1 fan to her breaking point. I'm not yet at my breaking point. I'm waiting for those angsty eps, they seem to be the ones I enjoy most and we haven't seen any this season. I'm beginning to feel that we've been given the light stuff first to soften us up and in the second half of the season we're going to be hit HARD with the angst. If that's the case putting all the light, playful eps first is a good idea because if things go the way I think having a funny ep in the middle will just be wrong.

I had to laugh at how Julia didn't like Pendrick's kiss. Confirmation that William is a better kisser than James, at least to Julia. William is her benchmark for other men and they come up lacking. I really don't want a love triangle between Nina, George and Miss Cherry. I am bored with George & Nina and their endless dramas and unhealthy relationship. Just keep them ended for the sake of George's character arc. Both characters deserve better than each other. He showed yet again he has more chemistry and more in common with Miss Cherry and if he has to date someone then I'd prefer her. Julia said she'd had better, it doesn't mean she meant William. I hope George's relationship with Nina is over, I don't know why but I just couldn't take to the woman. Not sure if I approve of Miss Cherry though. Of course she meant William. They've kissed loads of times on the show and she always acts like she loves it. William is her dream man. He might not be for plenty of other women, but he is for Julia. I don't dislike Nina as a character, she's quite entertaining and I like her modern ideals, but I don't like her unhealthy and forced romance with George, and I don't think she has a place on the show. The Burlesque scenes always just feel like needless filler ala the Suffragette stuff in S8.

Perhaps these two eps, which were both a little off the wall though in different ways, shouldn't have been shown back to back. Last week's episode was brilliant. TBH I'm not sure why any viewers had a problem with it, with the exception of no Brackenreid, it had all the ingredients of classic MM, only in a more slapstick way. It was the episode this season that has had the most good bits. I'm not really minding this season, and the only issue I have with it is the unnecessary focus on George's romance with Nina. PM needs to quit trying to push George as a sex symbol, it isn't making him very likable. He's better at cute/nicer romances like with Edna and he does have genuone chemistry with Miss Cherry: who definitely does like him going by her behaviour in this episode. Yes, it all feels a little strange to have minimal Brackenreid, but overall it's not a bad season IMHO. It's just not one of the better seasons. I don't actually agree it doesn't have any character arcs in S10. It has ones for W/J (their house building is ongoing), George and his useless romance, Higgins seeming to be trying to find his way, Rebecca finding her way in Pathology, and Brackenreid feeling restless. I don't need angst to enjoy MM. I've generally enjoyed the episodes, it just needs some more W/J scenes, less George & Nina, more Rebecca's personal life, and a proper reason for Brackenreid's inevitable departure. Just don't kill him and I won't feel alienated by the finale. Hopefully they also don't mess with William and Julia's relationship because we had 7 seasons of that, and if they mess with William's job in the finale then they'll sort it out in S11. Which I honestly do believe should be the natural finale of MM. Not that I'd stop watching if it wasn't, as long as Julia and W/J are still around then I will be as well. I've been around for them and the crimes since the airing of S2 (2009) in the UK and I'll stick around for them until the end. I just want a good ending for them and the journey will be something I will love or accept.

Side stepping this episode for the moment let's talk about the 1904 Olympic Games! Why? Because I've been doing a lot of research into them for my timeline ( yes remember that thing I did?) The 1904 Olympics were vastly overshadowed by the World's Fair - celebrating the Louisiana Purchase. In a sense they were seen as an extension to the World's Fair. The competitions were spread out from July 1st all the way to November 23 - with the bulk of sporting events happening between August 23 and September 3. Dispite this, these olympics marked the first time that a primary English speaking nation hosted the Olympics and the first time they had left Continental Europe. Due to the Russo-Japanese War and the diffculties getting to St. Louis the majority of competitors came from the North American continent, in fact only 62 of the 651 athletes came from outside of North America. Out of the 651 athletes present – 645 men and 6 women (Miss James would be pleased!) representing 12 countries. The United States - having the bulk number of athletes (a whopping 526) there took home a total of 239 medals while Germany (13) and Cuba (9) came in second and third for total medal counts. In addition this was the first Olympic games to give out gold medals to the winners (before that winners got silver and second place got bronze, and third place got a pat on the back) , and the last to be held in conjunction to a fair. There were 94 events held in 17 different sporting areas, Aquatics - under which came Swimming (9) and Diving (2), Archery (6), Athletics (25) - indcuding running, vaulting and high jumps, throwing (hammers, discs and weights) triathon and all round, Boxing (7), Cycling (7), Fencing (5), Football (1), Golf (2), Gymnastics (11), Lacrosse (1), Roque (1), Rowing (5), Tennis (2), Tug-O-War (1), Weightlifting (2) and Wrestling (7). Only 42 events actually included athletes who were not from the United States. Now lets talk about Canada and Football. Canada during the 1904 games sent 56 competitors - putting it in second place for the number of athletes competing. Canada took home a total of 6 Medals, (4) gold, (1) silver and (1) bronze. The matches took place between November 16-23- the last sporting event of the games. Only two nations participated, Canada and yep you guessed it the United States - with Canada defeating both American teams, and rewarded gold on November 18th. Phew. Now I need to get back to my timeline BECAUSE DATE INCONSISTENCIES MAKE ME WANT TO CRY

Not sure if I approve of Miss Cherry though. I'm with Murdochic in that I'm pretty confident she did mean Darcy William. That said, William better start getting freakier with her or else she's gonna get bored. Hint, hint, William-just remember the kissing bandit... At this point I wish Julia was thinking about Darcy. At least something would be happening.

When was the last time William even had any real character growth? Season 6? It's as if all his problems magically went away when he & Julia finally got together. I'm also not a big fan of the big George arcs either. I don't mind it a little bit here and there but I feel like he is meant as the main character at times. I always liked Murdoch Mysteries because William & Julia were a cool, cute, bad-ass crime fighting duo. That was taken away when Julia was written out of the morgue and I patiently waited for that element to come back. Now that it's here they still don't want to write it that way. It's frustrating and honestly at times I feel like someone somewhere hates her character and/or the Jilliam ship and is trying their hardest to write her anywhere else they possibly can. I mean Helene even said she almost left the show some time ago because they were going to write her out completely :/

So my New Years resolution is to get here faster and you know actually partipate in the discussions! Like physically cut out the time if I have to do come here and do that. We'll see how I do XD
Now lets talk about this weeks episode eh? So much happened I don't know where to begin! AHHHH!
Oh-la-la drama!
Brackenrid and Pendrick who woulda thought eh? I really feel for Murdoch - I've been in that position before it's quite horrible. They were being inexcusably rude. The one time the one time that Murdoch actually goes to the pub with them and this happens. My poor little awkward butterfly. By this point the Pendrick effect (as I am now calling it) has become freakin' hilarious. Sure we all know what's going to happen Murdoch eaither arresting or almost arresting Pendrick, Pendrick is innocent, it's his dastardly female "assistant" who then runs off with his research! But (at least to me) how they work it in each time he appears is interesting.
It was about freakin' time that Murdoch did a Jekyll and Hyde episode! HOW MANY SEASONS HAVE WE HAD?? And I must say they did a good job of it! The misinformation campaign was strong - as to who did the murder. Even though we all knew it wasn't Pendrick. To be honest I was rather surprised it was so simple in the end that the rival shopkeeper did it.
To be honest I never hated Nina, but I didn't absolutly adore her either. Personally I thought she was good for him - bringing him out of his comfort zone and providing an alternative to a more traditional relationship - like the one he had with Edna. In a sense he needed to not be with someone tradionally like Edna for a bit just because her loss really hit him hard. George I feel was rather controlling in this relationship (which made me uncomfortable at times) than in past ones for the same reasons. Edna turned out to still be married (although her husband did promptly die) George thought they could be together - a family and then that was shattered by forces he couldn't control. I hope that in his next relationship he breaks out of this need to control - as it really didn't suit him.
EAT IT CHIEF CONSTABLE A PAPIST IS NOW THE DE-FACTO INSPECTOR OF STATIONHOUSE NO.4 HA
Sorry was that bitter?
Did anyone catch that in "Bend It Like Brackenried" Brax literally says something along the lines of "Why would you go see the World's Fair? Toronto has everything we need!" [To John]. Oh my how your eyes have been jerked open - so go forth my dear Brackenreid and travel dear god man you deserve it! Go forth and have your adventures broaden your horizons, see some of the world before you come back and RETIRE (note key word) But come back to your wife alive and in one piece because I think she just might kill you if you don't!
TIMELINE INCONSISTENCIES HURT MY TIMEY-WHIMEY SOUL
The football matches in the 1904 olympics were LITERALLY the last sports played, and they happened in NOVEMBER - (November 18th was they day that Canada was rewarded gold) But this episode clearly takes place in a warmer month than November! (like no winter wear, leaves on trees etc) And for the first time I cannot make nonfictional fact and fiction sit nicely on my timeline! ARRGGHHH What I need is another episode to help me figure out generally the season better but that probably won't happen until March...

Perhaps these two eps, which were both a little off the wall though in different ways, shouldn't have been shown back to back. The writers keep reminding us that the show is a mystery, and yes, that's true, but MM is more than a mystery, it has a compelling set of characters that draw you in as they solve mysteries. If you reduce the show down to just the mysteries, it's not the same show, pure and simple. I don't mind stories about George, but I think the problem has been in focusing on George to the exclusion of everyone else. The show is not Crabtree's Capers, but Murdoch Mysteries. Where has William been this season as anything other than a wooden man? He's missing his "Williamness", and recently hasn't really served any purpose other than the mechanism for solving a mystery. It's almost as though the show has decided to take a formulaic approach, and the charm of this show was that they were never run of the mill formula show, it was unique, there was nothing else out there like it. Now, it's in danger of becoming Law and Order, an interesting show on its own, but not a show that is appointment TV. As much as I hate to admit it, it's slipped from a "OMG I must watch it the second it airs", to a "I'll catch it when I get a chance." I still look forward to Murdoch Mondays, but I'm no longer demanding it instantly.

I hope that in his next relationship he breaks out of this need to control - as it really didn't suit him. George wasn't controlling with Edna, they had a healthy relationship and were equals with each other. He is controlling with Nina, or as controlling as he's allowed to get away with. I don't like how he acts around Nina and I don't like how he tries to subtly change her. That is why I dislike their relationship, and the fact it's getting too much unnecessary focus and it has nothing to do with the premise of MM. Edna fitted into the show better, and so would someone like Miss Cherry. Nina sticks out like a sore thumb and she doesn't suit George as a character. I don't find it believable she'd go for a guy like him, and she wouldn't fall in love with him. Nina shouldn't have to change just to keep George, especially when he's already showing clear interest in another woman. I may be in a minority here, but I have no issues with William this season. I find him as watchable as always and other than my wanting a few more W/J scenes, I'm not too displeased with how things are going there. I don't want forced drama for the sake of it.

I agree about Nina. (May fault - I didn't specify which relationship I was talking about in my original post, considering I was talking about both Nina & Edna I probably should have been clearer) I haven't had any problems with William this season either. We've had so much drama with him, and Jilliam that it's kind of a releif to be somewhat clear of that. (Now watch me have spoken too soon) Too much drama or forced drama leads to MM becoming a soap - which would undoubtedly be the death of the show.

At this point I wish Julia was thinking about Darcy. At least something would be happening. I'm telling you man, I was only half kidding, but it raises the question, why was Julia hanging around all those soccer players a few weeks ago? Was it because she's bored? Maybe she enjoys watching soccer, played by fit young men?
