Wasn't the Prince Albert from season 1 the grandson of Queen Victoria? You're thinking of Prince Albert Victor (the queen's GRANDson). He was the first son of Edward VII. He would've been king if he hadn't died in 1889...I think it was, since nobody expected his father to live quite as long as he did. When he did die, after Eward VII's death, his second son (and Albert's younger brother) came to the throne as George V. Prince A.V. was also suspected of being Jack the Ripper in 1888, but there was never enough evidence to make it stick.

What a shame Murdoch's old love isn't in it though.

The show is still good, but it could be great, if Julia and William had actually gotten together.

Yes, I still love the show, but it's not quite the same without Julia.

I wonder if the change in the show has to do with the change in writers? I went on Wikepedia and noticed that the writers for episode one and three were new writers who had never written for Murdoch Mysteries before. I read on facebook that a whole new crop of writers had been brought in for season 5. It is still a bit early to judge the whole season, but so far I am not impressed.
Hints for season 6 Show Masters!!! Bring back Laura Phillips back as a writer. In my opinion she wrote the best ever MM episode : Shades of Grey. I loved that episode because it did what I like best about MM, develop the characters by throwing curves at them. The William of Season 5 is practically cartoonish compared to that episode.

Is there no hope for William and Julia? because without their romance the show has lost it's spark. This series just isn't as good, I hate to say it, but I feel it's true. With that essential chemistry missing from their scenes it's all gone a bit one dimensional, and the 'lady of the week' love interests are boring and annoying. William is not and has never been a big ladies man. I hate crime dramas that have too much romance, which is why W/J being a longterm romance fitted in perfectly. If this continues like it is I can't see me wanting to watch S6 tbh. Dr Grace is no Julia, and the weakily written Julia substitutes that keep popping up aren't worth the time. Also, I am tired of Anna being brought back. If it was going to work for them it would have worked already, she was always second best. Move on writers.

agree completely! This is what got me into the show to begin with. Then i learned to love all the other characters and then the actual murder mystery elements. without their love story, the show is kinda boring IMO, at least every ep that she hasn't been in, i've found boring. if they continue down this road for the rest of the season i doubt i'll want to watch next season.=( but i'm still holding out hope that the writers know what they are doing and everything will work out as it should in the end.

There was a reply from Maureen Jennings' husband on the forum of Alibi TV and he basically told the fans to hang in there as there are major stories coming up in the upcoming episodes including for our dear Julia ;D. So, I have decided to trust him and even for me a weaker episode of Murdoch Mysteries is still far better than anything on TV right now. I won't lie I will be more happy once Julia is back on the screen but I trust the writers. It's the romance between W/J but also everything else: the cases (some more corky than others); George and the Inspector; the Victorian Era etc... that got me hooked to this show and I'm not ready to throw it away just yet

I do miss Julia but I don't think it's much different than the beginning of S4 when she was in Buffalo. I don't think William has had a romance a week. He wasn't interested in the woman in the Yukon romantically. I think he felt like Iris was so much like Julia that there was an instant attraction. There have always been lighter and darker episodes. I always enjoy both types of episodes. If they were all light or all dark, I wouldn't enjoy it as much.

You're right that it is very like season 4's beginning and I have to say I at least liked Evil Eye of Egypt more than I did Kommando last year. You're also right that it's not romance of the week yet. I think I fear it just because I don't know for sure that Julia will be back in a regular role, and I've always considered her an important part of the story.
You raise a very good point about Iris being reminiscent of Julia, which does make the attraction more tolerable and sensible.
I also agree that the episodes varying in tone is a good thing, although I don't think any of the three so far was that dark. I just wasn't as thrilled with the Evil Eye as I usually am.

Yeah, I think Julia will be back in a regular role based on the plot summaries I've seen. I am pretty sure she will be by the middle of the season actually. But I'm not sure she will be working in the morgue yet. I expect that will happen by S6 though. I thought Back and to the Left was darker than both Murdoch of the Klondike and Evil Eye of Egypt. It wasn't really dark (like Kommando was) but still on the darker side.

Of course Julia will be back her name is on the credits even in episodes she's not in. I never doubted her coming back by ep 7, which is when she's first mentioned in the summaries. I am worried they've finished the romance of W/J, and William does not work with other woman. They have tried it with at least 3 other serious love interests so far and it always falls flat. Yet they are suddenly throwing all these possible love interests at his head this series, whether he's directly interested or not it's annoying having woman all over him. They have had two so far, and we know boring Anna is back. So that is at least three that we know of, and I expect more. It ruins the show IMO. Murdoch Mysteries is a crime show, it is not a rom-com. W/J having a slowburn romance worked fine as they were regular characters and it stopped the 'lady of the week' appearing all the time. It feels like they have gotten Julia out of the way this series so they can do 'lady of the week' storylines to spice S5 up, or some stupid idea. It isn't working for me. I want the crime back, exclusively. Leave any needed romance with W/J, it's worked for four series so no need to fix what's not broken. Just make them a couple later this series and we can have all the romance we need and can get on with the cases in S6. Too much romance ruins crime shows IMO.

To me it isn't any different than in all the previous seasons when it comes to how many women pursue William and/or vice versa. He has always had plenty of female interest in him to varying degrees. That interest usually only lasts one episode and doesn't really go anywhere except glances and smiles. The only reason it may feel like more this time is that it has happened twice in three episodes. I have a feeling it won't happen again until Anna returns. That won't be until ep 7.
