Okay.
I watched the episode today.
Am I the only one who wants to punch Giles in the face?
I thought the episode was interesting and very cleverly done. I like Dr. Grace. She's certainly an interesting addition to the cast. I'm not sure how I feel about Dr. Ogden leaving, though. Not happy about it.
Can you all explain to me what your qualms are with the 3D image and the stereoscope? I don't understand. It was a technology of the period, so it's not like it's an anachronism...

Oh yeah, Giles is nasty. That actor is good at playing those characters. He really isn't any nastier than Stockton was though.

I agree that Giles isn't any nastier than Stockton. That said, however, Giles is a more developed character than Stockton from The Mad Hatter, and he had more scenes than Stockton was wont to have.

No, you're not. he reminds me a lot of Dr. Francis and i wanted to kick his ass every time he was uppity with Murdoch. as for the 3D thing, i don't know much about the actual technology from back then. so i thought it was something a little too advanced and that's why it bothered me (i mean they only just started having moving pictures). but apparantly it's legit so i don't have any more qualms with it.

Yeah, Giles had a larger role in MiW but in this episode his role was more like Stockton. We'll see if he's in other episodes more. I think the stereoscope (I think that's what it's called) is like a View Finder. Those give the illusion of depth and they were very popular in the early days of photography. What Murdoch did was modify that.

Moving pictures and the stereoscope were certainly new technology in the 1890s, but they were certainly popular.

My qualms with this 3D picture are that i find it odd that Murdoch can just make it "like that". Just place the two images over each other, add them and tada. It absolutely isn't that easy and while he may be a man of many talents (building stuff, concluding etc) I think it's not possible that he himself could make such a perfect picture in a few hours (at the most). Just as unlikely as it still is that Julia could have done a perfect facial reconstruction with tissue markers and clay in one night with the instruction of a book. People who do that professionally today need several days up to weeks, even with the help of all the statistics they have. Simply not possible like this. I am not saying it wasn't possible at the time, but not by two amateurs in that short amount of time

I think it was supposed to have taken her days but even still. This one I don't find as difficult but I think maybe we should have seen more of his technique to do it.

What a wonderful episode.... Many many Julia scenes. I guess the writers had to put a lot of Julia scenes in this episode as she will ge gone for the next 4. Think Marlon Brando in "A Steetcar named Desire" when he screams "Stella..." Well repace Stella with Julia and that is how I feel right now. Tst.. Tst.. Tst... writers!!!! How dare you be so cruel to us.
On a different note. My husband and I were in Dallas Tx last month and spent a day doing the JFK assasination thing, so all the details are fresh in our mind. This whole episode was a spoof on the JFK assasination.
William getting in the carriage and speeding away from the scene. = JFK limo speeding up after JFK was shot.
The 3rd story window from which the shot came from = The 3rd story window where Oswald shot JFK.
I could go on forever on this. The way the boxes were lined up at the window, same as JFK. The spent casing. The movie of the crime. As a matter of fact, my husband and I looked at each other and said "Zapruder film", when we saw the camera rolling in the shooting scene. The first suspect, the Irish man dying, same as Lee Harvey Oswald. The use of the word "patsy". Oswald used it. All the details at the morgue about the angle of the bullet. The use of the word "Magic bullet". The only item that was missing was the Grassy Knoll. I quite enjoyed this element of the episode. In my opinion it was not overdone.
All in all an excellent episode. I will definitely miss Julia. I am hoping the writers bring her back with a bang....

The Grassy Knoll was not missing. In this episode, its stand-in was the packing-crates where witnesses say they heard another shot coming from.

I noticed the similarities to the JFK assassination, particularly the magic bullet part.

Just a stray thought that occurred to me...I initially thought Dr. Grace repeated "Julia" after William said it just out of surprise at his familiarity ... but was it also perhaps at his reaching across the class barriers as well?
I have to say I didn't pick up the similarities to the JFK assassination when I first watched the show, but when I watched it again after reading that thought I was absolutely shocked at how many parallels there were-so many that I felt stupid for not having seen them the first go-round!

No, it suggests that they have courted or are courting. That's the only time a woman would call a man by his first name and vice versa.
