I agree with everyone, this was a very good episode, even if i found some parts to be rather predictable. ie. the dog whistle activating the machine or the lie detector not working on any of the suspects. btw, i thought it was hilarious that they got Arlene from the Dragon's Den (Canadian show, i believe the American equivalent is the Shark's Tank) to do a cameo as the potential investor. And then the "I'm Out" line was priceless as a result because they always say this on the show.
I love how they hinted at the dead guy being sick at the beginning but then i completely forgot about it. but i knew Bell couldn't be the killer (or that would be taken a lot of liberties with actual history) and i still didn't figure out that he must have killed himself. which just shows how well written this one was.
Brackenreid better watch it or he's going to become a full blown addict! One could argue that he already is an alcoholic (or at least was), but then he's also gotten addicted to cocaine and now possibly heroine. It's amazing to think that everyone was so blase about such things back then. Nowadays, he'd lose his job and go to jail. Hopefully Margaret will be able to sort him out, once again.
yeah, the I-mails made me simultaneously smile and roll my eyes. I gather that particular invention didn't get any investors as it wouldn't have been historically accurate. same thing goes for the truthizer.
i wonder if what Bell wants to discuss has anything to do with this elusive time machine in the finale? Guess we'll find out in a month's time.

Yeah, I thought it was Bell only because of the similarities to Dead End Street when the one guy who didn't seem to have a problem with the victim was his killer. But I thought it would be taking liberties with history, too. The woman they had as Bell's wife, Myrtle did look a lot like his real wife, Mabel. I don't know why they changed her name though. I get a little squeamish with the drug stuff with Thomas, too. Maybe it's because my brother is a recovering addict. They didn't yet know the harmful effects of heroin (remember in Til Death they kept using it like Tylenol). They were starting to understand the effects of cocaine, but not to the degree we do now. But since we do, it's a little creepy to see him using them. The stuff about the dentist was taken from MM book Poor Tom is Cold. Although in the book it is William with the toothache. I believe next episode is going to involve surgery and be a bit like Future Imperfect was with Eugenics, the potentially negative side of science/scientists.

This was a very interesting episode. Certainly one of the most complex that I've seen for a while. I think it was very well done. Exciting, intriguing and funny at the same time.
The "imails" were an interesting idea. The "computer" and the other nicknacks like the remote control light-switch and so-forth, were lots of fun.
I know that MM likes shoehorning in famous historical personages, but in this episode, I reckon AGB was a bit...I dunno...
Forced?
I didn't see what he added to the episode or the plot. In my mind, he might as well not have existed.

I think Bell was just there to introduce himself and he would b turning up again soon and he will have a big storyline. I dont know why he would b in the timemachine episode like someone suggested though. Ithough HG Wells would be the one to b in that episode and if Berthie is in there, we may see Julia and perhaps Ruby in that matter because Ruby likes new stories for her news read and Wells fanciesJulia anyway and I am sure it wont matter to Wells if she is married or not!. He will still carry on his flirting with Julia. Bet William wont like it too much and we probably wont see Darcy anyway in such an episode. Hope it will b fun to watch. I want to see angst and jalousie and hot spicy moments (in a dream perhaps!!!!.) Hahahaha

Bell's not in the finale (the time machine episode). He's in Murdoch in Wonderland. I don't think William could have communicated as well with Myrtle without Bell being there. He explained a lot about her condition and how she communicated.

This was a great episode. I liked all the inventions at the beginning, and it was funny to see George there with the lie detector. Especially when he asked the husband if he thought his wife to be too fat. OMG, me and hubby couldn't stop laughing. George is so cheeky!
Speaking of George, his character has grown leaps and bounds since the start of the series. He's really acquired a lot of confidence--and moxie! The progress is very natural because it always sat beneath him, just waiting to come out. And it has season by season.
I like that Higgins was in this episode. He's just too adorable.
Another fine appearance by Margaret. Lord, she deserves a medal for putting up with Brackenreid! Ah, one of my fave couples on the show.

Hey Nugget, Glad you are back I was wondering since you have not posted about the 2nd parter of Stroll on the wild side (maybe you didn't want to, that is fine by me Invention Convention is my #3 favorite of season 5, it was so funny and clever I really loved it and I didn't expect the end at all. Glad you liked it!!!

Yeah, part two of wild side was a let down so I thought I'd keep my comments to myself LOL.
I really like this episode, though.

To Nugget, I understand, there were twists in the second parter episode when you compare the direction the first part was taking; I personally liked it but I understand that other were not as pleased. However "Invention Convention" is a favorite of mine this season (not the favorite but one on the top of my list for sure); it was really funny and I thought the writing and the mystery plot was clever. I red posts were people figured out that the guy killed himself, I personally couldn't and I kinda feel a bit dumbish tonight Loved how they used the lie detector again and that dentist story with the Inspector cracked me up. So maybe I will read you after next episode or maybe not, I will check anyway because I like reading your posts they are very insightful!! Take care

I didn't see it coming that he killed himself either until pretty close to when it was revealed.

Thanks, Barbama. I enjoy yapping about episodes I've watched. Probably because I'm quite the emotional reader and TV watcher. If it's good enough to draw me in, hubby is sorta laughing becasue i "react" in my recliner LOL. I laugh, get mad, get frustrated, and even sad. Cold Case is another TV show that draws me in like MM does.

Hannikan, thanks for boosting my confidence I felt a bit like I was the only one that didn't see it coming so now I know that I'm not alone To Nugget, You're welcome, I am like that as well while watching episodes especially when I am getting engrossed with them because I like it so much so totally get where you are coming from I also so your post about the "Shade of Grey" episode, one of my favorite as well even if it is so so so sad!! The acting is stellar not only by Yannick and Helene but also every other characters in the story (Dr.Tash, the countess, the other doctor can't remember his name etc...) So as I said before maybe I will read you after next week episode or maybe the week after. I do hope that you might have comments (whatever direction they go) after "Murdoch in Toyland" which is not next week but the week after because it is my absolute favorite of season 5. I don't want to be a tease and break your resolution of not looking at spoilers so I won't say more except that I can't wait to read your next post ;D P.S: Hannikan too, I love reading your insights on the episodes ;D

Dr. Ralph Fitch was the other doctor. He was played by Ian Clark, who is a great actor. For anyone who may have also watched Road to Avonlea, he played Simon Tremayne in that. The countess was pretty funny. I cracked up when Thomas outted her. And George saying he hadn't ever meet a real countess. Then William says you're not likely to. But that is a hard episode to watch for me. The hemorrhaging is hard to watch. Yes, I enjoy reading everyone's comments, too. I look forward to seeing more on the final 3 episodes.

It annoys me that people needed to explain code permutations to William in this episode. I think previous episodes showed that William had a strong grasp of cyphers and he had made a dedicated personal study of them. I thought the ultimate invention resembled a game of Mousetrap! Also, when William threatened them all with the noose, my first thought was - William can most definitely act! He acts on a regular basis in the interrogation room. Perhaps he is only bad at acting when he has to say lines someone else wrote.
