Years ago the only type of fanfic that was likely to make me run screaming away faster than mpreg was Educating the Male Virgin. (Especially if the character in question could not possibly fit that description).
But in the case of MM it's possible. Maureen Jennings actually wrote the William Murdoch character that way. I don't like it. I prefer to believe William and Julia were getting some action during the "Eternal Courtship" of Season 3, and that's why William didn't feel any particular compulsion to go ring shopping. But the Forces of Historical Accuracy are against me, so we are faced with a wedding night where Julia has some experience both in and out of wedlock and William may not have any at all.
Sooooo.
What's the opening line on that one?
(PG rated only, please).

Anyway, back to the topic the "40 (ish) yr. old virgin".....the opening line in THAT conversation would have to be as good as or better than what Maureen Jennings herself wrote in one of her early MM books, when Enid Jones was the one doing the 'educating'. I don't know what PG is anymore since the kids know a heck of a lot more than I do these days but I won't quote her here....possibly you've read it.

I guess it was the equivalent since Enid had been previously married and William was hiding "how to" books in the closet, but I didn't like it, and I don't see that as a William/Julia scenario. I see William (the TV character) as somehow more mature, and Julia's equal in every respect. Also, the (TV) William seems to need to appear to be an expert at everything. Remember him giving Julia real estate advice? I think if you don't include explicit description of body parts that you would cover up on the street or use words that you wouldn't use at High Tea, then it's PG. Actually, anything you think could actually air on TV would be PG. Bloodlust is probably the upper limit for MM.

Tonight's thought on this topic: I can see William and Julia getting into a tussle over who is going to give the other the best night of their lives! XD
Poor William - he has to be a bit paranoid about being compared to Darcy.
****
I don't want to keep replying to myself on this thread, so I'm just going to edit this post. Yesterday I read a late 19th century poem that advised young men to save themselves for marriage, and regard the search for their wife as a sort of quest for their holy destiny of domestic bliss. So I guess I can imagine a conversation along the lines of William confessing he saved himself for Julia, Julia reassuring William she loves him with her whole heart or is somehow worthy of being saved-up for or otherwise inviting him to give himself to her. The triple x stuff ensues.
And, as mentioned in my Bridal Shop post, it would be hilarious if William gets distracted by a zipper. That's Canadian, too!!!
Come on, I can't be the only one trying to work this one out. XD

There is ample evidence that William is not a 40 year old virgin! He was very certain untying Anna's laces in "The Murdoch Identity" and they definitely got it on after dinner in his room in "Stroll on the Wild Side". Brackenreid even commented when William came in late to work the next morning, hmmmm!
I'll grant you Julia has far more experience but William at least has some.

Shall we speculate on which one of them owns a copy of the Kama Sutra?

Shall we speculate on which one of them owns a copy of the Kama Sutra? ROTFLMAO - I would lay money on them BOTH having a copy, and a funny bit of house-moving-in business when they mutually discover that. Complete with a lot of ridiculous excuses about medical, cultural, and scientific research. And they both probably have a copy of Sir Richard Burton's Arabian Nights, replete with Burton's footnotes and appendices on "oriental sexual mores". It was considered pornography, available to private subscribers only. That would put a whole new spin on William's attitude toward the ownership of certain post cards, now wouldn't it? But Burton was a famous explorer and adventure hero. Any respectable member of the National Geographic Society (probably William) would buy Burton's books. The question is...who will be the first to suggest they read them together? Or maybe try a little experiment or two?

Hehehe. I love the way your mind works!
I'm figuring they both have a copy too. Like the Arabian Nights idea.
My shipper mind works on the premise that they'll go back and forth taking the lead. Yum!

Perhaps it will become a bedtime reading ritual? Or a game of leaving strategically placed bookmarks? They would have to watch out for the maid, though. Dang, it was tough to live a frisky married life back then.

With the amount of nookie you are predicting for them, the 'bedtime reading' will have to start before dinner! The bookmarks have a LOT of potential, particularly for our shy, awkward William.
The maid will have to go to her own home by 8 p.m. I've always been fascinated with the ability of the upper crust to really ignore the fact that their servants were sentient beings. They simply didn't care what was being said or thought below stairs.

I have a feeling William will lose a lot of the shyness once he's actually married and can be more certain in his expectations. Well, except perhaps for that "dark places" matter. It might be awkward for him to invite Julia to try out a leather corset, stiletto boots, and a jaunty bowler.

He could use one of those bookmarks you suggested earlier!

I've got "Blood Lust" on right now. The honeymoon is a perfect time for William to explore the darker fantasies of women that so confused him in this episode. Oh, and Julia could get to explore her very lustful fantasy! Woo hoo XD.

Hmm this is an interesting question: is marriage permission to indulge in those "dark places" or is it another middle class identity of "uxorious love" that William will be trying to maintain? I'm amusing myself with some scenes resulting from some serendipitous "bookshelf discoveries", though.

Marriage very definitely will give them both the avenue they need to pursue those dark places, especially since they've held off for sooooo long.
I think Inspector Guillaume had the right of it in terms of Victorian morality/sexuality within a marriage. "Marriage is about the family. You make babies with your wife, but you make love to your mistress".
I contend that William and Julia will have anything but a traditional marriage.

Enid represented the traditional "wife": William had a choice, and he choose Julia. (But then he procrastinated on proposing and screwed it up, lol.). It cracks me up to think Julia understood French at the time, just as she understood the painting was no landscape. No hiding your little "dark place" secrets from her, William dear! Julia does an awful lot of "playing along" with the William's proprieties. ...and she's probably still going to be Dr. Ogden after the marriage. I'm sure William is aching to call her Mrs. Murdoch.
