In Stroll on the Wild Side 1 William was late for work after dinner with Anna. Peter Mitchell said (and unfortunately I can't remember where I saw this) the intention was for William and Anna to have 'slept' together.

I caught a couple of raunchy references in Journey to the Center of Toronto (7x11), and who could miss the Freudian aspect of William's blackboard drawing (it's even in my 40 Year Old Virgin thingamabob), but it seems I didn't even catch the half of it. I definitely have to watch that episode again! From CosmicCalvalcade's Tumblr (discussion with PeachesandLube Tumblr: Ooh did CC catch Julia trying to take her own peek here? CosmicCalvalcade: holy-lakemonster-batman.tumblr.comCC also did a series where Julia catches William at his "inappropriate looking" - lol! The rest of this series can be found on CC's tumblr if you CLICK HERE. Had to add to this there is also a discussion of "penetrating" bank floors, lol. This reminds me of the Masters of Sex intro: youtu.be/GrLNUGQefxwi love how it plays on innuendo!

With that much innuendo I assume one of the writers was feeling rather frisky when they wrote it, not unlike Murdoch himself. It may have even been subconsciously done. Or they were just having fun. If I may indulge in a little Inception physics here... We are dealing with an era where psychiatry is delving into the Unconscious. The discovery of radiation has revealed whole new worlds, opening up new questions about the supernatural and theosophical possibility. Einstein is about to propose relativity. Quantum mechanics and the Copenhagen Interpretation are on the horizon. In short, reality itself is destabilizing around Station House 4. Meanwhile William, to put it mildly, has been repressed far too long, and has been teased MERCILESSLY by Julia for quite a while. He's about to pop some buttons. If I were the writers, I'd have some fun not only with this episode being an allegory of Victorian sexual repression, but with the idea William is actually causing these events in some weird quantum entangled way because of what's going on with subconscious at this time. Einstein would frown at the Subconscious/Relativity crossover, but Madame Blavatsky wouldn't. Ps. Of course the writers were having fun!

The Inspector did make the "cats sleeping with dogs" joke. If he really said this I bet it was after a few beers though, because it's a tactical error for anyone on the creative team to commit one way or the other on this. Ps. I note this is your first comment. Welcome!

Yep, that's exactly the sort of allegory/innuendo. Until we can beg grovel convince CC to give us the Perv Highlighty Bits version of Journey to Center of Toronto, here is the S7 Funnies with the "Screwing Machine" quotes. As a bonus, it has "lewdness" being a case for William to investigate right before that, lol. Also, while I was looking for these vids, I saw one of CC's comedy outtakes was used for a Toronto Star article about MM a couple months ago! Congrats CC!!! That's so cool!

or honeymoon performance anxiety angst. . hahahaha - I bet that one appears on one of those "whiteboards" the writers use to rile up fans. solution: William runs out to Chinatown to buy a bottle of ginseng
I've been considering what you said about the writers changing their mind about William's character. Now I'm not so sure about it. In later seasons we can say he waits for the invite for Julia for: - class/professional/victorian propriety reasons - catholic/mommy reasons - just his gentlemanly style reasons But in the first season when he's having all the fantasies, the barriers do seem more powerfully psychological, like he wants to ask Julia out but can't. Or that he somehow thinks he's started a relationship with Julia (hiding the note from George) when he actually hasn't. And is yet oblivious to what is NOT happening (when Julia is checking him for injuries after the Irish hostage incident). In the first season I think William is being played as painfully shy, and a tad Asperger's. In later season's William is played is more thoughtless because he's compartmentalized, but not particularly shy when he's around people he's familiar with. The "social awkwardness" is reserved for women and upper class environments - particularly when the two are combined. In fact he get's increasingly confident over the years, which I think is great character development. Ps. I think William would be a virgin in scenario 1, but not necessarily in scenario 2.

I'm not sure how I never noticed that before. I must have been willfully shutting off my brain to avoid the possibility of them sleeping together. It's still ambiguous. Believe what you wish (until we can find Peter Mitchell's testimony, I guess). But it would be a tactical error if he made a commitment one way or the other.
