If you don't like licorice, then you may not care for the taste of absinthe. However, if you're a drinker, it's one of those things you should try at least once. I don't really care for licorice, but I didn't hate it. Of course, it's mighty powerful stuff, and got me pretty drunk, pretty quickly. If you drink it louche-that is. The first time I had it in Vietnam, I had it Czech or Bohemian style-which is to light it on fire, and didn't see what the fuss was all about. I was disappointed. However, I was in New Orleans last summer, and a bartender convinced me to try it again-saying I should never set it afire as it burns off all the alcohol, and that Louche (the method used in GM) was the only way to go. I couldn't even finish it-I got tipsy about halfway through. Hubby and I have read about an absinthe bar here in Tokyo and we think we'll give it a try when some friends come to town in the fall. Just my experiences with it. Others may differ.

Also, it's a fiddly drink, so it may be best to just find a bar that serves it ( and therefore has all the accouterments) rather than buy a bottle itself. Seriously, it has a fair amount of paraphernalia. It's not your average cocktail. If you love it, then make the investment.
Which begs the question, if William doesn't drink, how did he know how to prepare the damn thing?

I very rarely drink, but I'm very curious to see what all the fuss is about. I was interested in this one because it is sweetened a bit. I wouldn't be setting anything on fire at home, and I probably wouldn't be doing any fancy pouring over sugar cubes like on MM. Probably not the authentic experience, but close enough for me to feel bohemian and artsy. Mainly I'd like to know (if anyone else has tried absinthe) if there is a brand that is good for newbies: on the sweet side is better for me.

Now it's in my head to try it. I guess it would be more fun with the paraphernalia. But if I go to the bar it would also be more fun if I went with other people. Regarding William: you know he does research and experiments up the wazoo before he does anything.

This ain't a "knock it back" kinda drink-it's an experience.

Go with a group of curious, experience-seeking friends. You'll have fun! Even if there will be no hawt snogging session afterwards.

Also, I don't know who I'd even call for this. Seriously tempted to make a run into the city today, but I don't like hanging out in bars alone. I'm just recovering from some serious frak-up so I'm in no condition for snogging - I wish! Ps. The other gals got an MM tour report to make, shouldn't I get some MM experience, too!

kindle battery is low but guess what I'm drinking right now! And I like the licorice taste! Absinthe report: Since I'd never had absinthe before, and I really don't drink much, I was overwhelmed by the menu. I asked for the host to recommend one. He suggested I go for an inexpensive one since I didn't know if I liked it or not. He suggested Kubler Swiss Absinthe Superiere. www.wormwoodsociety.org/index.php/component/content/article/228-kubler-absinthe-superieure-us-releaseThe good news is they did the whole thing with pouring water over the sugar cube. I was surprised it was water. I was disappointed that this was a white absinthe. No green fairy - this was a white fairy. On the bright side I had no problem with the taste at all. I think it's the sort of think that you'd hate if you got sick on it once. But if you're the type of person who likes sour-type foods in general, then your taste buds will be okay with absinthe. I was actually hoping to upgrade to a second (green one), but the first one was 110 proof and, despite eating, that thing almost knocked me over after a few minutes, lol. I stalled as long as I could, but eventually realized I'm a 1-serious-drink-an-afternoon person. However that restaurant was really cool, and perhaps I'll go back and upgrade to green fairy some day.

Well, by the time it lies louche with the water and the sugar, I think it loses some color, so it's not as vivid a green as it is neat.
But, that's cool. As I'm sure you saw, it's kind of a to-do. And kind of cool to watch the whole process with the water fountain.

And kind of cool to watch the whole process with the water fountain. Actually it was called a "blanche" kind, so it wasn't green at all. But I did get the whole sugar spoon and louche cloud experience. Also the place was very nice with wood paneling and Toulouse-Lautrec posters. It's been some time (a couple years) since I've had the energy to just run into the city and do something like that on the spur, so that in itself was sort of nice. Did lack Yannick Bisson for a date, though!
