I've speculated that the title of this one is a jab at fans who said that the Station House 4 boys acted like Keystone Kops on Midnight Train to Kingston.

Ug! Midnight Train to Kingston was probably the worst episode in terms of police action. Even though Jackson was pretty incompetent throughout, you couldn't really blame the constables. There were supposed to be two of them guarding Gillies at all times, plus one outside of Gillies compartment, which leaves one constable to guard the entire rest of the train. They were completely unprepared for anything out of the norm to happen, which was especially ridiculous considering who they were transporting. I know that the writers aren't law enforcement specialists, but seriously? The lack of strategy was appalling. Plus everyone kept yelling at poor Henry when Jackson's lack of vigilance literally ended up getting someone killed!

Besides, the Inspector only has himself to blame for Jackson.

I don't think it had much to do with being turn-of-the-century. Considering the high risk of the prisoner they were transporting, they could have recruited at least a few more constables.

Maybe the hubris cycle of the Greek Tragedy is starting! It's coming~ Or the whole thing was just an incredibly ham-handed approach to get a showdown between Gillies and William. This is a perfect example of why I'm over Gillies, and I pray that they leave him dead, dead, dead. He leads to bad writing.

IMHO even the Gillies parts of Murdoch in Toyland, and basically the whole plot of The Murdoch Trap seems kind of hokey to me. don't kill me. I feel the same about the new Moriarty on the TV Sherlock - I prefer the more classic villain in the Sherlock Holmes movies instead. He's too much like one of those nutty comic book super villains. Because I like my TV shows to have big arcs - and not just romantic ones - I do want William to have a Moriarty. Even a slightly slashy Moriarty. Maybe Pendrick was going there if he didn't turn out to be innocent and a cool guy (when he isn't under-paying his actors). But William deserves a better Moriarty than Gillies. He deserves someone of supreme, icy intelligence. Someone who really might be smarter than William, who really might be undefeatable. Someone who is a real threat to William and all he loves. Maybe Season 8 will bring us such a Moriarty. Where is that "wishes for Season 8" list again...?

However, let Gillies be dead and gone, please? It's been done. Yawn.

I think William might just be his own best adversary. Backstory! Not following you here - are you suggesting some sort of split personality? No, just that William himself (his hubris as you have mentioned, his quest for the truth, righteousness, etc) may be his own undoing.
