I do think they have listened to people who have watched from the earlier seasons and are trying to improve season 9. I hope it turns out well. I have that faith, too. IMHO, another part of the problem last season was too much meta, and I think that has to be out of their system by now. By the time they got to The Artful Detective, they were definitely angsting it up a bit. And they actually got away with making George carry the angst. I still have to credit Jonny with pulling off that counter-intuitive idea. It amuses me to think he made the transition mainly by turning up the collar on his coat.

For me only most of S5 and a lot of S8 have been Murdoch Mysteries lite. The writing for those two seasons was very shaky in too many episodes. S9 so far has been good, but I admit if they kill off Lillian it will taint things for me a bit. I was hoping to enjoy this season in it's entirety. Emily having a fitting exit would help towards that.
MM is in it's 9th season so the writing can't be as strong as it was in the first 4. Adding on the extra episodes has also meant they have to come up with more ideas and sometimes they're obviously struggling because we saw last year they lost their way. Maybe with Emily leaving, and Rebecca arriving it will breath new ideas into things. I assume we again won't be seeing Rebecca this week as it's Emily's episode. I will be sad to see her go.

A lot of posters on here will have to agree to disagree with you about S8 observations. But we're still fans of the show and we're still watching and caring. I've enjoyed the first two episodes of S9, and they've made me happy to still be a fan.
Now we're just worried about poor Emily, and Lillian. Hopefully you'll surprise us and she doesn't die, so both characters can leave alive. Whether together or apart.

I don't agree that its inevitable writing quality will go down: a great arc would lead to the perception of improvement or even "the best season yet". I think CC hit on an important factor: re-watchability. I think episodes only demand rewatching if they contribute to a larger character arc, are subject to multiple interpretations - especially in relation to the larger arc, and they contain some sort of easter eggs to find. I have to agree that Season 8 doesn't demand re-watching. This is ironic because the visual polish of the show and potential for grand special effects increased after the move to CBC. Fallenbelle identified the shorter run time (less dialogue) as something that may have removed a layer of complication, as well. Sometimes the arc is only apparent after a lot of episodes have gone by: only then does the binge-rewatching get triggered. I'll be looking for that trigger this season.

We were talking about S8 at the weekend. It wasn't a bad season if you were only interested in the mysteries, however if you follow Jilliam they definitely lost their way. Perhaps they were focusing on the individual episodes and lost track of the character arcs which led to a wedding but no marriage. That was my main beef with the season.

For me all the inter-personal relationships of the characters felt off-kilter in S8. As did the professional arcs of Julia and Emily, that's are why I think it lost it's way. S9 is feeling much more well rounded in terms of the characters personal and professional lives.
Though we haven't actually seen Julia do any paid work yet, lol. Going by the preview she will at least be the stand-in coroner in this episode. Which must be what makes her realise she misses the morgue, she always comes back to that morgue in the end.

I don't think they are written to be re-watched multiple times anymore. I think it was PM that tweeted about mysteries only requiring one viewing, which in turn doesn't give the episodes much depth. When I re-watched the episodes in order there were plenty of things I did not pick up on in the earlier seasons but the later seasons seemed to present everything at face value. Honestly, it was boring rewatching some of the newer episodes..

OMG! I was right that there was a twist we wouldn't see coming, but wrong about what it would be. I enjoyed this episode-I'm glad I stayed home today to catch it!

I loved this ep and I never thought in a million years that I would have tears over these characters. The quality of acting tonight was absolutely SUPERB, especially Georgina.

Some general thoughts without spoilers:
Beautiful acting on the part of Georgina.
Yay for Julia and women's intuition!
My, my, my, Brax-how you have grown.
William's and George's reactions when they learn the identity of Lillian's lover! LOL!
Of course George wanted to talk about it, and of course William didn't. Love that part as well!
How Julia wordlessly takes the champagne from William with a knowing smile.
Henry's last attempt to hit on Emily and William's laugh at how futile it is.
I'll post more later!

I had the twitter feed going while I watched round 2. Very interesting with Georgina and Sara Mitch tweeting along but I don't know how people can tear themselves away from the action long enough to post!
Excellent episode all around. The writers and cast have outdone themselves,
