Script written by Maureen Jennings, based on her novel Vices of My Blood.
Thanks for the reminder Carco. With the hiatus I easily have time to reread the book.
It just so happens that Hodge and I were in Guelph 2 weeks ago with her daughter and another MM friend to watch filming for this episode. We froze our buts off but it was worth it to get autographs and pics with Jonny, Laughlin and Thomas. We also caught Maureen sneeking into the set so I managed to snag her autograph as well. The most hilarious part of the day was the director yelling "CUT...MAUREEN, YOU'RE IN THE SHOT" .

I asked her those historical questions I've been meaning to ask, and she got back to me the same day!

Sounds like you both had a good time as always. I just read an old article somewhere recently where it mentioned that Maureen appeared in about one episode a season. There was a pic from the Beaton Manor episode where she was one of the manor's servants (I think). I don't know if she still does that or not or how many episodes she appeared in. Alfred Hitchcock did something like that I think.

I started unpacking my boxes of books yesterday to find Vices of My Blood. Success!! Anyone else going to read or re-read before House of Industry airs?

From the CBC schedule: When a reporter investigating conditions at a workhouse is murdered, Murdoch goes undercover to investigate.

Well kudos to Maureen Jennings for significantly rewriting Vices of My Blood to further develop the police corruption arc. I loved seeing Brackenreid thinly accuse Davis of corruption. Then the trailer for next week...obviously Davis is a man who can't ignore a gauntlet when it is thrown down. Now the title "Bl**dy H*ll" makes sense. For once it is William digging the hole!!
The fight scene in the lumber mill kind of freaked me out. Yikes and bloody hell! I'm probably missing a nod to a slasher film.
Did anybody start holding their breath when Julia said "Taking some time apart might be god for us"? Whaaaaat. Julia is running away again emotionally. The empty crib was just SO sad.
Mrs. Reilly has one redeeming quality at least....she's an excellent judge of handsome men!
This whole episode felt very different to me. I haven't put my finger on it. Maybe because this is the first time this season that William and Julia have not been drawing together.
I was fascinated with the scenes of young Ewan Gallagher. That was the part Hodge and I saw being filmed and it was bloody cold out and fairly dull. It sure didn't look that bad. The magic of filters!

So, this episode looks like it was setting up for the remainder of this season and the cliffhanger. But yes, this was a good rewrite of Vices of My Blood to further the scope on police corruption, and yes, Brax didn't pull any punches when addressing Davis' former home at SH5 and corruption. I wonder if Brax gets fired in the next few episodes? I seriously lol'd at William digging the hole for once...good to know that he actually does know how to do so. William, William, William...when will you learn to recognize that a woman is hitting on you? Or in this case, asking you for personal favors? Does Julia have to take your pants off before you clue in? The lumber mill scene was indeed creepy, and there must be a horror film reference I'm missing, but seeing as I'm not a horror fan... I though it was going to be Julia that pulled away once again (because she's done it before), but this time, I suspect it's William that's putting some distance between them-which is an interesting twist on how things have been done previously. W/J are clearly having a rough patch, and no doubt that's going to be further developed next week. The next question is, does the season end with the two of them separated, or will they have made up by then?

I hope this doesn't mean trouble for W/J. It makes no sense that they'd pull away from each other and they need to get closer before the season ends. It would be dumb to have them split up over something that neither of them are to blame for.
I'd like more of Rebecca hanging out with the boys. They'd like a little Scooby gang.

At the risk of having rocks thrown at me, I'm not at all opposed to a little bit of angst between W/J, as it makes for a better story. I'm not worried as I know they'll work it out eventually, but the show needs to build up some tension, and lets face it, those two do tension quite well. I just hope it resolves itself before the end of the season-I do not want another W/J cliffhanger for season 10. I realize I'm channeling Snacky here... As for Rebecca, yes. In fact, I hope they don't rush to fix her up with anyone because I like the idea of the Three Musketeers riding around Toronto scoping out exotic culinary fare together. But, I suspect interracial romance will be coming sooner rather than later quite shortly.

I really, really enjoyed this episode. And I think the setup for the next one is even more thrilling!
In many ways, you could almost call this a two-parter. And Part II is next week!! I'm so excited!
I really feel this episode had a lot of everything. Good fight-scenes, intrigue, spying, coverups, collusions...it was very very dark and gripping.
The motor-car scam side-story was interesting as well, but I feel poorly carried out - I really thought it would end with the boy breaking his leg or something, and actually having to go to hospital.
