I think I agree with this. William has many excellent qualities, but being a father raising an infant is not one of them. I can see the Family Brackenreid coming to his regular assistance on this level. Yes, I can see it now.....Brackenreid saying "Oh, bloody hell, Murdoch, that's not what you do! Give him to me....." then muttering, "Bloody useless..." You called it!

Overall I'd rate this one as average. I had to google Bernier to find out that he was actually an explorer but didn't aim for the North Pole until 1904. Anything that gets me interested in actual history is a major bonus! Pimblett's map seemed to relate more to the northwest passage than the north pole.
Interesting how they chose to refer to Nuniq as Inuit...a term that didn't come into favour until about 30 years ago.
Nuniq of the North in Toronto, lol! George even made it a movie.
Loved the Gleeful Jumper!

I'm feeling very conflicted about the Roland story line. He is an adorable, sunny, smiley baby but NO 9 month-old on the planet would be content in a jolly jumper all day. It's just as bad a leaving him in a playpen. I did chuckle though when Bernier said Julia wasn't much of a mother while William bristled. In all fairness to Helene, he is a big baby who would get very heavy very quickly.
The fact that there has been no conversation at all between W/J about Roland's care seems very odd. They can't alternate taking him to work so the situation feels forced and unrealistic. Brackenreid was so sweet bouncing the baby but his goodwill won't last forever. Something's gotta give and I'm worried about how it will play out.

Well Brackenreid did suggest (kind of) a nanny and I think that's what Rebecca James was about to suggest when she was cut off. I think this story line is a way to give the people that want a baby their way. I still think the baby won't last, something's going to happen.

Is it just that W/J are such intellectuals that they aren't seen the big picture or is it their decision to adopt was so spontaneous they haven't gotten into dealing with the day to day? Julia did sort of reference "modern parenting" but it seemed to mean that they have no intention of modifying their lives, that Roland has to fit into the life they currently lead. Yikes!

I was interested in the mystery, because it is pretty relevant with the discovery of the Franklin ship last year. Even the madness associated with lead in cans referred to that doomed expedition. It was great how Ninook did the high kick: that is a real Inuit sport where they high kick a ball or target, I can't remember which. (saw it on a documentary a while back) Yes they used to say Eskimo, which Brackenreid only used once.
I love that baby, but I found his presence distracting and a bit annoying. But isn't that what many people in the board have been saying would happen all along? I don't think that is accidental on the part of the production team. In a recent interview, Helene made a comment about how William and Julia would be terrible parents! If Roland continues to be a part of their lives they will have to get help, that is obvious. And he will have to be on the show less! (At least until he is 8 years old!) But I am wondering about that very fact: it may be that Roland will only be with them for a short while. I am dreading that occurrence, because it will be heartbreaking.

William does seem to like the child, he just doesn't know how to cope with him. On thinking about this further, I wonder if the distracting baby is to show what including a baby in the show will do. Short of ignoring the baby altogether, which you can't really do in the case of the Murdochs (unlike the Brackenreids) it will spoil the snippets of home life.

Well overall not a bad episode. Roland was a tad annoying, but now they have a playpen it might be better. I must say he is a quiet baby. Seeing Juila and William being awkward parents was awesome though.
Crabtree once again proves he is a stand-up human being and a rather decent detective in his own right. Also great to see Julia taking Rebecca under her wing and encouraging her to do mourgey things.

The whole point of the Roland story line is that the baby doesn't fit in with their lifestyle and is distracting. I think this is a clever way to silence the baby crowd. Show them how a baby will upset the balance of the show. I don't think RJ is cut out to be a pathologist.
