I agree about the wedding dress, it was awful and not at all appropriate to the period. Too white for one thing. I hope they give more consideration to her dress this time around. About a musical episode--I agree a full blown musical version would be completely over the top but George could pester W&J into going to the Music Hall that were by this time fairly respectable. Most of the songs were nothing but one double entendre after another, while some of the men's songs were more like ballads, but by no means not all. I would love to see Julia tease William with one of those songs. Have you seen the Ragtime episode yet? That episode not only had music hall music - we learned Emily could play te piano! There are ways music can be integrated into MM. There was the Opera episode, too. I would really like Yannick to have the opportunity to sing, though it would almost be funnier if William couldn't carry a tune in a bucket despite his "scientific" understanding of how music works. During this era, before TV or radio, it was common to entertain by just standing around the piano and singing folk songs, ballads, and tunes from popular shows. Also, there's always the occasion of a Christmas episode. But I would never want singing to be spotlighted: that's a mistake that's made on many shows. They take a break from whatever is going on in the plot of the show, and everyone just stands around and admires the person singing. Unless the song is something fantastic, complete with awe-inspiring special effects that compete with MTV, I will turn off the TV at that point. A better approach is to integrate the singing into the plot. For instance, have the Station House 4 guys interrupted with a case while caroling for charity. Or have some sort of challenge or bet or other plot point involved in the singing. Or Brackenreid could enlist help directing his children's christmas pageant. There are all sorts of ways to casually bring in some music. Do we even need to hear the whole song, or a whole verse, to appreciate someone has a beautiful voice? We have been getting plenty of dance after all!

Right you are! The possibilities are endless although I completely agree with you about not making a big deal of it. Instead as you say there are lots of ways to work it in. William could walk into the room where Julia is playing a record and he/she/they could sing just the last part of the song. The thing about music hall songs is many of them were only one to two minutes long, so not much time would be spent on the song itself. Another option would be the operetta's of Gilbert and Sullivan which are loaded with songs that could be adapted.
I live in the US and I hope that Acorn TV will stream Season 8 relatively soon after the episodes are broadcast. They did that with the second season of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries from Australia. It was aired on Monday nights there and it was available for viewing on Tuesdays here. That was great.
I can hardly wait to see how many of the viewers' ideas will show up in the coming episodes.

Ooooh, I love Gilbert and Sullivan! BTW, the reason this coming up all the sudden is that Yannick has been singing on his children's show Napkin Man. So now we know he can sing. If Helene can sing, too, maybe they can do a duet. I still have hope that Murdoch Mysteries can get distribution on a better cable carrier in the US. I've been trying to think of ways to promote the show or raise awareness of it. One thing that amazes me is that there are so many Steampunk conventions and balls and meetups - Murdoch Mysteries should get some sort of representation there. I've tried to so some outreach in that direction already. But it would be better if some MM market people would also do that, because they can offer some swag and such. Anyway, they just need more visibility. And some reviews in the sort of entertainment media that shows up on the Google News feed like Entertainment Weekly and TMZ. I wonder if the problem is there is some sort of payola scheme going on re: TV reviews.

I have to agree that Ovation does an awful job of promoting "The Artful Detective" and I think that stupid name is 99% of the reason most potential viewers don't watch it. If Shaftsbury or CDC or whoever has the contract with Ovation cannot take MM to another channel or network maybe they could convince them into changing the back to the original since that is what is what it's called all over the world. Good Grief!
I've heard YB sing and he has a very good singing voice--pleasant to listen to. I would love to see him and HJ perform a duet!
"Hey kids! Let's put on a show!" How about a Toronto Constabulary Gala night where people representing all the station houses perform a variety show to raise money for the widow's and orphan's fund? The Gala would just be a backdrop to a mystery and but the progress of the putting on the show would keep pace with the progress of the criminal investigation.

Ooh that gala show is a great idea - especially if stuff keeps going wrong and interrupting it, so we won't have big pauses that turn MM into Canadian Idol. Nice one. I've seen the Ovation situation before: an American company licenses some International property and then for some reason needs to change the name and make some other changes. Then they lose all the momentum of marketing of the main brand, and they can't possibly succeed. It's not like Ovation itself is a major success as a brand. Someone ought to kick the decision maker here in the seat of the pants. THEY COULD HAVE MADE "THE ARTFUL DETECTIVE" A SUBTITLE - FOR PETE'S SAKE!!!! Has no one learned from the last decade of Google domination that DISCOVERABILITY IS EVERYTHING? Anyway another cable channel needs to take some interest in MM, and that's what I'm pushing for.

I'm squirming at the thought of a duet, even if Yannick has a good voice. The very thought is so outside William's persona! My vote for the 'musical' version is to do another webseries like "The Murdoch Effect", but make it "Murdoch, the Musical".

Yeah, I wouldn't want them to do anything that steps outside the plot, or makes the audience step back and have to appreciate the fact that everyone is singing now. However, during that era, singing around a piano was the main form of evening entertainment. So it will be interesting to see if MM can slip in a "snippet" of song somewhere. XD

Oooh, the gang singing by a piano at the Brackenreid's on Christmas Eve! You'd get your Christmas episode...and the precedent for a Christmas gathering was established in "20th Century Murdoch".

Exactly - a case could just rudely interrupt them or whatnot. I definitely wouldn't want an episode to end with "Christmas Idol" around the Brackenreid piano, though. >.< Speaking of music, did you see any of the threads where I posted this?

Lol! Maybe they could start with the Christmas party but it gets interrupted by a high profile murder that CC Giles assigns to Station 4.

I hadn't seen that vid. Brilliant as usual! Yes, in CC's top three! I think it beats the Britney Spears crackvid for better editing. I could watch this over and over, and I probably will. I think the best part was I wasn't sure whether William wasn't actually checking out the guys in the locker room at the beginning and CC had actually dared to make THAT kind of crack vid.

It seems to me we all have a different idea of a "musical" episode. I am not suggesting an episode that follows the format of a musical stage production. I would just like to have them sing. An example could be they see a production of the Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan. The next morning one of them could start humming one of the a tune and then sing the words, then the other could join in and finish the piece. It wouldn't take long at all and could be done so it seems quite natural.
To the point that it would be out of character for William. In the S7 finally he jumped up on a table to tell the men about the engagement and invited everyone without checking with Julia. That is about as spontaneous as anyone can be. I'm hopping that after they are married he will loosen up. He almost has to because Julia finds so many things funny.
It is all academic because the episodes for this season have already been written are in various stages of production.

We've seen Julia hum along to her record player and it was quite natural. In fact, I think it was more natural than her poetry recitals. Anyway, I think we are all in agreement that if any musical interludes should arise on MM, it should be naturally integrated into the episode. Part of the interest in it may be that singing is associated with happiness, and it's rare to see William happy. It's so rare, I have a post dedicated to documenting William's happy moments, lol. If William comes into Station House 4 singing in the morning, we can guess what that means.
