I think Julia is a great character, she is clever, witty, passionate, so many interests and ahead of her time. I think she and William are well suited..... both crave knowledge, interact well, and in the final episode of series 3, show that they also love each other so much they were both willing to make sacrifices for each other even at theur own cost.

I agree with you Tanith about Julia's character, very modern for her time. I especially liked William and Julia's exchange in Victor, Victorian when J was upset that W had not stood up for her against the Inspector and W said he knew she did not need him. It showed how well W understands her, or at least how much better he does than in earlier series.

I think he always understood her pretty well (better than Brackenreid or Crabtree or most other men) but as he has gotten closer to her he understands her better. Julia's humor in S1 was a little off putting to me actually. I think William understood she was joking but thought it was sort of in poor taste (and sometimes I agreed). I think they toned it down later. It's funny because now Dr Francis' humor is off putting but I think it works better for his character to be that way because he is sort of a likable-unlikable character (sort of a love to hate character). William is more serious than Julia a lot of times and I think Julia's humor was her way of dealing with constantly being surrounded by death.

I think the differences between Julia and William are perfect for the story and for the relationship between them.and for me the way to be of Julia is the reason William loves her so madly...the other women we have seen around him are too normal and not modern enough for a smart man like William(ok,he is conservative but however modern for that period)

Yeah I agree with you that William, while having some conservative feelings due to his upbringing is also very modern. He is always at odds with those two aspects of his principles. Julia challenges him in a positive way so that he doesn't just accept things because that's what he was taught in church. He goes through a process of deciding what things he will hold onto from what he was taught and what things he has changed his mind about. Sometimes other characters or situations he encounters in cases push him in this way, too. All rational people go through this process for deciding their values and principles.

Agree with you!!in fact I think the story about William and Julia is very realistic!not only for the end of 800 but for our time too!it's more realistic than other shows that want be realistic.. However in 3 seasons is clear that william and Julia love each other and the writers want this relationship..so I hope in an happy ending

I really like Julia, too. I hope I don't get swatted for saying this, but I kept hoping the writers would hook her up with Dr. Roberts *oops*

He is a little like a more interesting Darcy. I think he's better looking, too. He's kind of cute though not as cute as William of course.

Julia is a wonderful character. As others have mentioned, she's far ahead of her time. Female doctors were still relatively scarce during this time. I think she adds an element of um...unconventionality to the show. But then, the entire show is about modernity. So she fits in very well in that respect. She has a fantastic relationship with William and her sister is just hilarious.

U r right about Julia's humor in season 1 but I also think Julia was trying to help Wiiliam to get over Lisa's death and tried to make him smile or laugh althought it didn't work most of the time.

Yeah, I think that's true that Julia was trying to make William laugh and forget about the pain of Liza's death. I just found her humor kind of lame, too.

I do love all the characters in the show but Julia has been my favorite from the start (maybe also because I love Hélène Joy's acting, she is really outstanding). She speaks her mind when most people don't want to hear it and about her humor in season 1, it is kind of morbid so maybe it is also her way to dissociate from being surrounded by death all the time (I have to admit that the scene in "Body double" with the skull cracked me up). I also like the fact as someone else said one time that she puts William out of his comfort zone and it does make for interesting scenes between them I was so happy to see her back and her storyline was so interesting because she is involved in a pretty scandalous subject for the time and she won't back down (at least I think she won't, I will have to see next week).
