I think the CBC will weed out some of the religious undertones, ie the oath for a Canadian soldier is to serve God queen and country, and I bet Murdoch will become less and less Catholic. His sign of the cross when he started to fly was a bit irreverent (although I can understand that he was rushed) And what was he doing kissing Julia full on the lips as if she was not married? I thought the flight over the falls was a bit hoakie. and how did the american agent know it was Murdoch who freed Pendleton ("Damn you Murdoch!"). Some sloppy writing perhaps or did I miss something? Also, too bad they got rid of Darcy so easily. His character could have been used a bit more- ie have him murdered and Murdoch as the main suspect. I am holding back so far to give it another chance.

I think they've already done that. Which is why he doesn't seem to care that Julia's willing to lie about the marriage being consummated/kissing her all over the place. I think the writers had to go the annulment route because they dug themselves into a corner and short of murdering Darcy, or Murdoch completely revoking his religion, they had to do it this way so that Murdoch would be free to marry her (Catholics don't believe in divorce). But I have a feeling that it won't be so simple and indeed, if that's it for Darcy I will be quite shocked and disappointed. (Don't get me started on how unbelievable it was that he agreed to the annulment in the first place).
I thought the flight over the falls was a bit hoakie.
Yup. But it was classic MM. It's always a bit hoakie so I loved it for that reason.

Haha! Good point! Um, maybe he saw him well enough before they took off? He had real good eyesight to get so close to shooting them over and over and over again. ;D What bothered me was how Myers et al just magically appeared out of nowhere only seconds after they crash landed! They couldn't possibly have known exactly where to be beforehand!
Also, too bad they got rid of Darcy so easily. His character could have been used a bit more- ie have him murdered and Murdoch as the main suspect.
Like I said before, I doubt it's going to be quite so simple. That would be a good idea for a storyline but they've done that one before. I.e. S4 finale. I think if Darcy is fated to die, it will be from a contagious disease of some sort that he picks up from the hospital.
I loved it. I was surprised that William was willing to kiss Julia while she is still legally married to Darcy, too. I guess it's to show that he's putting his love for her above his concerns over propriety and the law, not to mention the tenets of Christianity. It's definitely not all tied up though. I bet a million dollars it isn't (anyone take me up on that? I could use the money!) because Helene Joy said in an interview about S6 that they will be exploring throughout the season how difficult it is to get "unmarried" in this period, esp. for women. My guess is that Darcy will either change his mind about agreeing to the annulment or the official will not actually grant them one. They'd have to prove that not only had they not consummated the marriage, but that it was invalid to be married in the first place. It wouldn't be too hard to lie about consummation because Julia has not gotten pregnant. Since she apparently is unable to have children, that could be an argument to end the marriage. Darcy could claim that he did not know that about her when they married (which he may or may not have known) and therefore, the marriage was not valid. It is hard to get an annulment even today, so I'm sure it will be for them. If they're denied the annulment, Darcy won't agree to file for a divorce either. He's already afraid of the scandal of one according to Julia. Julia can't file for one as a woman, only a man could then (unless the woman could prove physical abuse). William may change his position about having an out-in-the-open romance if the annulment is prevented, too. He would start to feel guilty probably at some point about being involved while she's still legally married, too. That would be my guess anyway. I'm sure it will be an issue throughout the season.

It was great to see James Pendrick and Terence Myers back. When I saw their names in the opening credits I cheered. I enjoyed Brackenreid's sub-plot. I got a kick out of Emily eating in the morgue. There was something funny about that. I did miss seeing Higgins make an appearance.

I missed Higgins as well. They have really developed his character over the years to a point that he has become a regular "fixture" now, so it would be nice to see more of him in forthcoming episodes.
Haven't they done such a great job with him? I really wish they'd let him step up front for an episode, have a sub-plot like the regular cast do, such as Brackenreid's for this episode. My fingers are crossed.
I forgot to add I was so glad to see Margaret make an apperance. I adore the Brackenreids.
I loved reading all your comments. So happy that "Murdoch Mysteries" is finally back .
For me it was a very good start to the season. Having Pendrick and Myers was brilliant I love both characters; the Inspector wanting to go back to war (well his training was really something to watch I couldn't stop laughing at how many times he cursed while going through that "boot camp" so to speak). George and his wild ideas are back and I have to admit that contrary to last season I liked the interaction between him & Emily and the hamburger was fun too.
Finally regarding William & Julia I agree with Hannikan that it won't be that easy. As wonderful as the 1st and last scenes of the episode were to watch, getting an annulment (well obviously lying to get one) won't happen that easy or at all and I think getting a divorce might be the only albeit difficult option. However I do like that William is more relaxed about expressing his feelings to Julia. Maybe by losing her twice he discovered that it doesn't matter to him as much as before what people will think as long as he is with her.
Ok that was my 2 cents on that 1st episode, can't wait for the next one!!!
