*Spoilers*
For me this episode was just okay, not the spectacular experience that I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, there were many good moments, mostly Jilliam related, but it was just lacking for me. Not sure why exactly.
The ending didn't even make sense to me. Why did the captain want to go down with his ship just because he committed insurance fraud? Sure some people died, but he didn't cause their deaths so he probably wouldn't have been hung. Even more puzzling, why did the others let him stay aboard? Why wouldn't Brackenreid have just hit him over the head and thrown him into the raft? Some sort of honour code at play? I don't get it.

My thoughts. Spoilers, obviously.
Firstly. Goddammit Gillies. Stop stalling. Go die. Now.
I liked it. I really, really did. The Jilliam was impressive, Julia saved William, Brackenreid was on fine form, Higgins was as tetchy as ever, and we met a new character- Shelly the skeleton. I think we should be concerned about what Emily spends her time on. There were endless jabs and references and witty lines and perfect moments, "I've lost my hat" being one of the more memorable ones. I feel like CBC knows the characters, the lines, the humor that we love. They nailed that.
The plot wasn't so flawless. It was basically an inside-out version of Titanic, with noticably less casualties, no iceberg, and no stupid damsels in distress. Honestly, the two separate 'cases' were not strong, and the whole thing felt very rushed. It came at me in a very rapid-fire way, not giving me much time to process what was going on. And it wasn't as dramatic as I'd thought it would be. These were all flaws I noticed. I feel as if the writers are far better at the wit then they are at the actual plot lines.
The finer points of the episode? Definitely the Jilliam. Their final scene was beyond adorable, and I'm beginning to feel just a little hopeful for their future.
And Julia! I loved her this ep! She looks SO much better than she did last season! I love her wardrobe, I love her hair, I love her performing autopsies again.... I loved her saving Murdoch. We all knew it was going to happen, and I exhaled and said 'finally!' She just needs to save him a few more times, and then they'll be completely equal. I'm hoping that she'll take Gillies down this season. She deserves her own revenge on him.
So... a good episode. I enjoyed it. I was pumped for it. I'll definitely be watching it again this week, before Tour De Murdoch.
Btw, there was no flashback and neither Gillies nor Giles were in it. Some imbd troll was at it, I suppose. I had hoped there would be some kind of court scene... maybe next week? The Gillies trial hasn't yet been wrapped up, so there's still a possibility. Probably not, though- I think Michael Seater only did that one episode.
Murdoch Mondays are back! ....now Mondays are good things. Whatever shall I complain about now?

Hello All;
I'm finally back after avoiding the forum for a long while to not get into spoilers and I only comment on this as I don't want to know what will happen next week.
For me overall I thought it was a good opening episode for the season; most of the time I find that it takes 2 to maybe 3 episodes for a season to get its rhythm and that the opening is a glimpse of what is to come for the season, so I was not disappointed with this one I thought there was a lot of good things going. First the outside location on the boat was a nice change of scenery; as you said Melody Pond Brackenreid was in fine form in this episode; William & Julia had an easiness in their romance that I wasn't expecting so early in the season after what they have been through last season so I'm really pleased that the writers decided not to burden us much with the aftermath of the trial, almost hanging etc....we all know that Gillies is in the background and that something will happen but I found it a nice reprieve that he wasn't too much of a burden in William & Julia's relationship at least in this episode.
I did like also the scenes with Emily & George and the easy flirting between them.....Higgins!!! Geez in front of George telling Emily he could go with her to the lecture....no shame that constable!!!!
I also loved all the cheekiness regarding the internet and twitter.
So overall I'm really happy and I'm sure it is the beginning of an awesome season!!!!

I agree with you completely Melody, about CBC being very good at the comedy and not so much the murder mystery plot lines. But since I love the comedy bits, I don't mind so much. I mean S5 was a train wreck, getting virtually everything wrong and we can't blame CBC for that! Well Barb, they did have 6 months or so to get over the trauma that was Gillies. And since they know a lot of people took issue with the finale, they decided to make it up to us. Though it would have been rather bizarre if they were getting all close and cuddly and she was still in Widow's Black. Yeah, I fear that the writers are pushing for a confrontation between the two constables over Emily just to add some unnecessary drama and/or as a way to include Higgins more in the show. I hope I'm wrong. George will get his ass kicked and Higgins will get kicked off the force. :/ Let me just reiterate because I don't think it's really come across, that I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, I just wasn't blown away by it because I had unrealistic expectations of it being the most amazing thing I would ever see in my life.

I couldn't possibly dislike CBC. They're amazing. The sheer amount of promos for the show is unbelievable, and they saved Murdoch. But... the plots just aren't as strong.
Of course, that may be due to the length of time I've been watching MM- you kind of get a feel for which kinds of characters to expect.
William and Julia were cute this episode. But damn it, let them kiss! Please?

I really loved this episode! It moved at a faster pace than I'm used to seeing on most MM episodes and a lot of action was packed into it. I thought Julia looked wonderful---loved her hair, loved her outfits and (odd observation here I know) but for the most part it seemed like her voice was down an octave and was ...I don't know----calm. Ok, a couple of times she went back to the high pitched "William!" 's but generally Julia just seemed very relaxed and in a good place. I laughed when William tried to talk her into boarding a life boat because when she finally declared "I said, not without you", I thought I heard Helene's Australian accent come out. And loved seeing her save William for a change and she really had to work to do it. Couldn't have been easy swimming underwater in full costume -- especially long dress, etc. It was interesting to learn that the run-away Gillies was apparently re-captured and is now awaiting trial once the lawyers finish stalling. As was stated by others above , it seems TPTB have got the message and decided to put the Gillies arc to rest soon. I read somewhere that the show would salute the new head of Twitter as she used the be with CBC and was the one who gave the green light to move Murdoch Mysteries to CBC. That would have been the George/Henry conversation about "twittering". A nice way to say 'thanks!' to her. Fun to see George and Emily being silly and love George's line about "a barrel, a skeleton and a copper's topper" And William seemed far more animated than we usually see him and more relaxed too. Nice to see him laughing and smiling so much. Had to laugh at his joyful reaction when he saw the wireless telegraph machine. I swear you could see his fingers literally itching to give it a try! Brackenreid is warming up to Dr Ogden...she saved his best man so she's one of them now, I gather. He seemed quite annoyed when William pointed her out on the ship at the very beginning of the show. Was it because he was hoping to get off the boat before it sailed or was he annoyed with her distancing of William after her saved her from the noose? I don't see why the former would have been an issue, couldn't William have stayed on the boat and the Inspector go back ashore? Whatever the case, he seems to be ok with her presence now. I agree, the plot was a bit confusing but there was so much going and so much to take in relative to characters, etc., I'd probably have to see it a few times to sort it out plot-wise. As for Mr MacFarlane going down with the ship..he owned the ship so I guess it was the idea of the captain going down with the ship. An honour thing I assumed.
I'm interested to see if they continue in that more relaxed vein for the rest of the season....ven the dialogue didn't seem so "Victorian" for this episode. The words and conversations seemed more like our present day exchanges rather than the more formal version we've heard in the past. Of course, if we hear Murdoch's "What have you George?" the next time they are in Station 4 again, then I will know that theory has been shot down! And William and his danged hat!!! Looking forward to next Monday's episode.

^^Well Queen Victoria is dead so apparently the Edwardian age made an instant difference in language. Personally I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary about their exchanges other than the fact that everyone was happy for a change. But yeah, agree that Julia was lovely this ep and hopefully will remain so. The hat moment was very Indiana Jones like. I think they've done this a few times actually.

Haha, I heard her natural natural tone come out a bit too in that moment, Carco! It made me smile, 'cause I really love the way Helene speaks offscreen. It's pretty darned awesome. I want an Aussie accent! Enough of this British accent rubbish. I'm moving to Australia.

Yeppers, everyone being happy would really throw my MM radar off kilter so likely that's all it was. I'll know better once they're all back working in the station. While I have that thought (of the station) ....I wonder if Julia will get an office in Station 4 or is William going to have to share his with her. Hope she doesn't have to touch his stuff to find a place to work. That could spell trouble!

I'm pretty sure Julia will still work at the asylum, I've visited the set for the Murdoch Convention last August and the Asylum was still part of it with her office and the beds, there's no reason she's not a psychiatrist there anymore, nothing had been given or said that was going into the direction that she will work full time at the constabulary now....is that what you meant Carco?

A quick question. In the short autopsy scene what does Julia answer back to William when he says "Good work Doctor."? I've replayed the scene many times and I just cannot figure out what she says.
