Soooo... Just rewatched this, and anyone else notice the long second glance William gives Emily and Leslie Garland as he's leaving the club? She thinks he's left, but as she turns her attentions to Leslie, there's a parting shot of William looking rather disapprovingly at the two of them. Next time he sees her, he's quite short with her. He's definitely looking out for his bro-not as openly as George does, but still a wingman. I've seen this ep many times, one of my shippy favourites. I did notice William's look towards Emily and LG, he doesn't miss much! Also, I love how William ever so slightly gets his groove on...if you're not watching closely, it's very easy to miss. But, there's some slight head bobbing and a bit of body moving to the tune. I think William was quite taken with Ragtime music....

Rewatching this episode now-and I'm seeing quite a bit of forshadowing with the O'Sheas and the docks.

He will only be a wingman if George asks him to be - like when George asked his opinion of his newspaper ad or when George asked him about inviting Grace to the ball.

I think he probably liked the ragtime dancing later, even though he was clearly shocked by it. He definitely liked the effect it had on Julia later! And it challenged him to step up flirtation-wise!

It's only the 3rd time I've seen it, and there's a lot of subtext in this ep. I think it's seriously underrated. When I saw it all I could thing is "OMG, DOOMED!!!" There were 3 kisses. That had to be the countdown for something going drastically wrong with the ship. You could almost see the fuse burning toward one of those cartoon bowling-ball shaped black bombs.

William must have been about to fall out of his chair. And how to school his expression in front of Julia, hahahaha. I bet he was drinking any champagne served that night.

Rewatching this episode now-and I'm seeing quite a bit of forshadowing with the O'Sheas and the docks. Ooh, it's been on my list to rewatch those. I've only seen them once. (Not counting rewatching the tie-fondling scene a hundred times). Let me know if there's anything to zero in on.
Strike that, I didn't read the header and thought you were rewatching On the Waterfront. I need to rewatch those.

I think William did like the music, he seemed to be counting out the beat just before Emily approached him. He did look shocked and I got the impression he didn't know what to make of the dance. He certainly didn't immediately jump up for the standing ovation.

I think the dancing at the show shocked him, but once he had time to process, he was okay. He certainly liked the effect it had on Julia afterwards...

No, he's not as open or direct as George would be, but he's collecting information, is treating Emily coldly, and when George asks for romantic advice, will probably remind George that she's a cheater. Julia will defend Emily however, and this might cause some minor conflict between W/J in the eps to come.

Rewatching this episode now-and I'm seeing quite a bit of forshadowing with the O'Sheas and the docks. Yeah, rewatching it, I'm realizing that there's a lot of subtext there-and it's not all W/J. This is a seriously underrated episode with lots of foreshadowing.

I'm not sure if it's because she is younger and thus beneath him in the hierarchy of things or if it's because she replaced Julia. I doubt Emily will be a cause for conflict between William and Julia because Gedna seems a go. However, Emily seems so disappointed in Julia's failure to run for office - there might be a rift there. And I think Julia is going to begin to feel useless in general. My prediction is writer frustration at what to do with Julia's character will end up being voiced by Julia's character.
