I have been pondering all of the above for the last 5 seasons! I put it down to the writers dragging out the 'eternal courtship' rather than following a faster, more natural progression of the relationship. They pulled out religion, class, workplace appropriateness, Victorian mores and personal reticence all as plausible reasons to keep William and Julia from truly getting together. I, however, managed to happily contemplate a very different timeline .

Yup definitely the writers or producers or whoever really calls the shots.

I have no problem with dragging it out: I'm personally in favor of dragging it out. But they don't have to be boring about it. Introducing a little risk and drama keeps things interesting. (This is where I differ with fan2tvshows, when I get to his/her thread). There is a risk of showing too much nookie and wearing out the welcome. In Ragtime there was so much kissage, that I KNEW disaster was coming in the next episode. There had to be something bad coming. Even William looked like thinks were getting tedious by the time they got to the "determined woman" kiss scene. Maybe they needed to get past first base, lol.

I too understand the dragging it out. As I said, I'm happy to 'flesh it out' some myself, lol. That's really why we're shippers isn't it?

I'm WAY past ankle flashing. Give me some bodice ripping...ya, like in Bloodlust. It would be awfully nice to see Julia's fantasy realized! See snacky, you're not alone in the perv department .

We kind of saw some ankle when she was sitting on his desk in Blast of Silence (Shit). What I find funny is wondering how long she was sitting on his desk in semi lust phase, waiting for him in full view of all the constables! xD
As for me I just want them to get married already! I've been watching this show for six years now and the will they won't they has driven me insane!

I guess showing some ankle was an acceptable "public display of affection" if you were at the proposal stage? It's not like the rest of the station hadn't caught them kissing half a dozen time. She should have cornered William on a date and at least popped a few buttons for the cause! I do look forward to the marriage, but I would be just as satisfied if the writers dragged it out some more (as long as they did it well). I wouldn't insist on my views over yours, though. I really appreciate what long-time viewers went through during Season 4 and Season 5 with the chain-yanking and near cancellations. Some of this was downright cruel. The conditions under which I discovered and viewed MM were very different.

Hahahaha. I'd forgotten about the 'come hither' pose. She was ready to live out her Bloodlust fantasy...with the added 'frisson' of an audience

Haha, I wish we could see some actual bodice-ripping on MM. I think the screen will have to go-to-dark first. But surely we could see a zipper malfunction! D:

The conditions under which I discovered and viewed MM were very different. I said we kind of did. She was still wearing thick black woolen stockings but her skirts were raised. I think the problem with that is she knows what he's capable of (consider their first date) and she doesn't want him to get out of control and have him hating her afterwards for breaking his faith. I don't doubt they will for at least part of the season. :/ I'm pretty sure Julia was originally planned to be written off the show in the S4 finale. The alternate ending was her basically telling William (in the letter) that she was happy with her choice and didn't want him to come after her. But the test group was so outraged by this that the producers changed their minds. Three seasons later we've finally gotten past their stupid mistake. Now if they HAD gotten back together at the end of S4 I don't know if the show would still be running. So perhaps there is a silver lining here?

So perhaps there is a silver lining here? Hmm, I hadn't thought about Julia thwarting the nookie in order to protect William from his own sense of sin and self-hate. I guess that's plausible. Again, I wish the show itself would drop more clues to possible interpretations like that. They don't do enough to draw out the implications of William's religion, considering much of the audience today is religiously oblivious (much less aware of the particular implications of the Catholic faith). This is an interesting interpretation. I like it. I think you're probably right about Julia potentially being written out, and it's possible that Helene Joy was re-negotiating her contract, too. Tough cookies for the audience. T_T But I also agree that the results created a very interesting storyline in hindsight. From the perspective of a "binge watch", the whole Darcy marriage and divorce is a big ball of William-angst, which had the additional benefit of drawing out the ship: so that's all good from my point of view.

What I'm waiting to see in the wedding preamble is a more realistic physical relationship between them. I don't believe that William's Catholicism precludes premarital sex. His point about not compromising Julia only applied to them having an adulterous relationship while she was still married to Darcy.
It has been a roller coaster for the writers to know what to do. For 2 seasons running they didn't hear about being renewed until after they had wrapped up filming. I guess having been watching through all that external drama gave me more tolerance for the writing blips over the ship than someone who is unaware of the network politics.
