Hi everyone!
We all know that William wants to have children and Julia is not or at least seems not opposed to the idea. But if they had one and only one child, would you prefer they have a boy OR a girl?
I don't want to put a cart before the horse but I'm just curious to know your opinion.
A last thing! Play the game. Do not tell "both" or twins -a boy AND a girl- because I said "one and only one child".

Though it's caving to Victorian sexism, William seems to want a boy (his visions in Dinosaur Fever and Twentieth Century Murdoch), so I'll go with boy. It might be worth a thread to figure out why that is the case (Freudian? Abandonment issues? Victorian social bias? Male chauvinism? Does William just crave a little buddy?). Things will get interesting if Julia wants a girl.

Things will get interesting if Julia wants a girl. Also, in one episode the Inspector asked him if he wanted to have children and William said he hoped "to have a son one day". I don't think he'd even know what to do with a daughter! Seriously. Probably he wants a little buddy to join him in all his inventions and science projects. Oddly, he doesn't seem to have considered at all, that Julia was probably very much into science and all that as a child, too. Any child they had would likely inherit those genes as it's so strong in both of them. It seems to be another example of William's narrow mindedness on some topics. If they adopted at least he can press for a boy and thereby forgo the scary randomness (to him) of letting nature takes it's course.

I automatically thought "boy" but you've got me thinking. Perhaps one of William's reasons for wanting a son is so that he can "rewrite" his own feelings about father/son relationships. Harry gave him some food for thought when he said "I never hit my boy". Parenthood makes you look at your own relationship with your parents in a new way.

Adopting does bring the problem of "choice" into it, and therefore a potential argument! D: I'm still wondering if the writers will catch that bit about Julia needing to promise to raise the children Catholic if they get married by a priest. I still think she will refuse. Traveling Unitarian minister, ftw!

Parenthood makes you look at your own relationship with your parents in a new way. Yes, that has a ring of truth to it. Julia might even see it that way, too. Perhaps there will be no strife after all. *goes back to promoting excommunication angst plot*

Perhaps it's an antiquated bias, but I think women/girls just confound him as well. Don't get me wrong, he doesn't dislike them, but I suspect they make him nervous -much like the butterflies. He doesn't have heaps of experience with them, and probably had limited exposure to them growing up-save for the strait laced nun. He loves Julia, wants to be with her, but she does have to direct him. A daughter would confound him-I think he'd love her, but he'd be at a loss with her. Mother and daughter would own him in every sense.

I totally agree with this, but I think a daughter might actually do him good for all the reasons above. Maybe Julia could help him not be owned? In another thread Carco was talking about Julia messing with William's head - deliberately. He so doesn't need that. Credit: 22OntarioStreet

Credit: 22OntarioStreetI'm telling you, once Julia puts a ring on it and they have claim to one another both legally and in the eyes of God, William will be a changed man. The tie(chastity belt/leash) will be off, and the real William will come out to play more often.

One thing I'm sure about - that tie means something. btw, watch The Kissing Bandit again to see William wrestling with the demons of that leash, and resenting the heck out of it. Do my eyes deceive me, or has Julia noticed the missing tie here? Credit: 22OntarioSt

once Julia puts a ring on it Puts a ring where? Are we talking about a " Prince Albert" in the Naughty Victorian sense?

She's noticed something about that tie, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it just then. But once she realized what that tie symbolized, well, why do you think she's been trying so hard to get it off?

I suspect that Julia isn't 100% enamored of marriage, and she'd be perfectly happy just shacking up. But, she's found her boy, and he's a traditionalist, so if she wants to hit it ( and get that tie/leash off) she's going to have to put a ring on it.

It will make my fandom year if MM writers pick up on this and have Julia whip off the tie first thing after they are over the honeymoon suite threshold. I still suspect William's kind of afraid of what Julia will do with it, though. *snaps tie*

I don't listen to enough pop music to know the Beyonce reference, but putting a leash on one of those Prince Albert thingies could be painful. It did sound like part of the reason Julia was so desperate for William to propose in Season 3 was because of her father and the sense of encroaching Spinsterism. Now she's Been There, Done That. She's free to live as she would like, and some would even say it's in bad taste for her to remarry. So circumstances have changed for Julia. William, on the other hand, almost lost Julia because he didn't propose before. So now he's going to capture that flag before it gets away again. It's a good thing it's happening soon, because clearly she was wearing him down with all her "tenacity".
