Yes I know it has been said " the books are the books, the movies are the movies and the tv show is just that" or something like that. I have just received and watched all three movies this week, just once so far so these are just initial impressions. If this topic is already in another thread I apologize. I have not seen it. Warning to all: SPOILERS will probably happen. The movies are much more like the books, which makes sense as the titles are the same as three of the books: Except the Dying, Poor Tom is Cold, and Under The Dragon's Tail. In them Murdoch ( who pronounces his name more like "Murduck") is a great detective troubled by the ills of the society he lives in, who will stop at nothing to solve a case even if it means stepping on toes. I do not like Brackenreid at all in the films. He is just plain ornery and all too eager to kowtow to the higher ups to close a case. A major difference between the books and the movies which fed in to the series is the role of Dr. Ogden. A very minor character in the books, she is young and beautiful and spunky. True to the times, she has great difficulty getting respect from the police and judges. Even Murdoch is taken aback when she first appears as the coroner. But he does take a shine to her and she definitely likes him. I was greatly disappointed when she was not in the third movie. Ettie Weston is a major character in all three movies. In fact she is one of my favourites throughout. As stated in The Green Muse ( which I HAD to watch after the movies!)she and William are well acquainted, even beyond the help she gave solving the murder of her friend Alice. The last movie left me with the impression that more was going to happen between them. And the meeting between William and Ettie in TGM would support that something happened. I wonder what happened to her son? I am surprised that the writers did not explore this further. Maybe they felt they did not have the time? Or maybe the actress was not available. Yes I noticed that for the movies and books I have referred to Murdoch and for the tv show I have used William. IMHO this is in keeping with the portrayals within. Thoughts anyone? So, I don't have a lot to add here for the movies that hasn't already been said, but having not yet read the books, I'm going to comment that the movie William strikes me as being even just a bit more socially awkward than TV William. Movie William is still grieving for Liza(nicely played by having him dance with her picture) but is trying to get back out there and meet other women. I'm guessing that TV William is further down that road of grief and is starting to become interested in other women (Julia). Although movie William is attempting to move on-whereas TV William seems to be coasting. Maybe because they didn't have the luxury of time, but William wastes little time asking Julia out in the movies, and the final dance class scene is too cute about Murdoch having met his match "it's not a compliment" and the reason for Julia trying to lead "in school, I was always the boy" or something to that effect. They both seem kinda socially awkward, and it's cute. They are a match. In the movies, Julia does seem a bit younger than William, but nothing too big, IMO. I'm looking forward to watching #2 when it arrives in a couple of days, and I'm bummed that there's no Julia in #3. I'd like to think that it was because the actress wasn't available, but who knows.

Yes I was disappointed about Julia's disappearance in the third movie, but there is a consolation prize: Helene Joy in a role that will make you understand why Maureen Jennings wanted her for the series. That's all I will say for now.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the movies.

In related news, I got the complete collection of MM books for my birthday for my e-reader! But, they'll have to wait until my coursework is done.

Just be aware that the books are totally different from the show and you may not enjoy them as much. However I think they're a great primer for the show as you do see where the idea sprang from. Murdoch is very much a man of his times not like our Great Detective. He's also not as repressed....

I'm preparing myself for the books being one extreme, while the movie is a medium, and the tv show is the other extreme. Is that a fair expectation?

I have to say I didn't particularly like Murdoch in the books. I got used to him by the end though. I did like Murdoch in the movies.

IMO the books are well written, but I am a fan of the author. I happen to be reading her latest release, No Known Grave, about a character that she says is inspired by Thomas Craig. I do not own the books yet, having used the public library. This is a problem I will have to rectify since I keep wanting to refer back to them an it is getting inconvenient to keep re borrowing them. Plus, they are not always available because they are getting more popular, which is a good sign! The movies were made by the same production team as the series. In particular, Christina Jennings has been involved since then. Also Robert Carli wrote the music for the movies as well. So the movies are really closer to the series, just more "adult" TV. ( a nude body on a gurney, an explicit fantasy etc.) Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the books.

The library isn't an option for me sadly-or I probably would have at least tried them out that way.

My secret dream is to find older copies of the books somewhere. I find the latest release, with the cast of the TV show on the front, just annoying. The picture, where the cast are all dressed up for the ball, has absolutely no relationship with the books. It is a sales ploy, pure and simple.

We don't have room in our tiny apartment for any more books, so I have to buy them digitally. I hear you on the covers-I hate when they do that as well. Have you thought about buying them from Amazon as used copies? www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0312168292/ref=tmm_hrd_used_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=used&sr=1-1&qid=1417637726

I always have a couple of books on there so if I'm waiting for an appt. or something I have my book with me and if I finish one I have another to start. It's not the same as having the book in your hand but it works for me. It's been a life saver, my van broke down once and I had to wait 2 hours for my husband to pick me up with only car magazines to look at if I hadn't had my book!

So.....maybe I'll get to start reading a bit sooner. I'm making an unexpected trip back to the States, and my laptop battery won't last the entire 12 hours for me to work on schoolwork the entire time!
So, 12 hour plane ride=bad. Chance to read MM=good.

Hope this leads to a better Christmas with family rather than a worse Christmas for whatever reason.

I hope to be able to knock the projects out this weekend. Knowing I was going to be busy lit a fire under me to get one of the projects done today. Don't know how good it is... I hope this doesn't impede with me getting MM on Monday. It shouldn't-but still.
