Clara Brett Martin is a historical figure of the time. She was born to wealthy Anglican-Irish parents and graduated with a B.A. from Trinity College (now part of the University of Toronto) in mathematics at the age of 16. She petitioned the Law Society of Upper Canada for admission but was rejected due to an interpretation of the statute upholding the status of men as the only ones permitted to practice law. A year later, in 1892, the word "person" was broadened to include women. Interestingly, this law was supported by the Premier of Ontario. I just love how the writers of MM are able to weave in actual historical figures and content into the script. Female lawyer!

Awww, I'm touched. But it's going to be a few more hours for me at least. Is it something to do with the tie? What do you think Fallenbelle?? Now I know we're getting some fan service!

I am perfectly content to wait for you and snacky to lose your minds . OMG, I think some unleashing the beast is implied here...

All I'll say is I loved this ep, all my predictions were correct and yes lovemondays, Willliam is uber-hot, showing a side we haven't seen before. Do you think that there would have been more enthusiasm for the premiere if this had been constructed as a 2 hour episode?

I wasn't sure about this darker MM in theory but I absolutely loved they way they handled it here. With great angst comes great make up sex. That's the whole point!

I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of her in a professional context. The fab four are gonna roar. I think you're right. I have been contemplating the parallels drawn between the lack of power women have in general society vs the all powerful woman running the docks on the dark side. Yes, the Dark Side women seem to have had a lot of power through out history. "Good Women" only achieved some sort of autonomy recently.

Well not all of my predictions came true. I was wrong about the exact nature of the operation. Now that I think about it, my original notion didn't make any sense considering the state they kept the women in. Anyway, I was much much more pleased with this weeks episode than last weeks. Though I'm still laughing over where in the hell William came from at the end? I was somewhat stunned at his sudden presence. Loved the way he came to Julia's aid though, I think Julia did too...! Without having seen the ep, a few times William has raced to Julia's aid and "come out of nowhere" to help. Victoria Cross is a good example. Maybe they cut the "racing to aid part" and didn't realize a plot hole would be left in its wake...? Rescue and unleashing the beast? Waaaaaaaaaaaa - maybe I will stay up late to see it lol.

I wondered the same thing. Perhaps the Magic Homburg has developed a new power? Apparition?? But George has that super power too. (remember Hockey Night in Canada?) It seems like Murdoch was stalking Leslie, and then managed to hide in the office before Leslie came. Also, did they say WHERE the women came from? Europe somewhere, but where exactly? Some middle eastern country judging by the accent. So you were right about the trafficking of women? And it sounds like William finally gets to kick Leslie's ass? Are we definitively done with him...?

I looked up the surname Slorach on ancestry.com. It seems to be Scottish but I thought the language was maybe Hungarian or Polish? Yeah my guess would be Hungarian or Yugoslavian. Let's see, Slorach's momma made Jackson something gross in Part 1. If we can decipher what he called it, we should have our country of origin. It sounded like Gaboschka, but no luck in initial attempts to find that on Google images.

I think Slorach is saying Kapusta. It's Polish for cabbage. That explains why it smelled so bad. That makes sense. I quite liked his "ma". William's expression was very cute when he was standing between the Slorachs. Did she have advice, re: dallying on the wedding?
