I still wish people would take into account that there was a recent "hot" idea that marriage actually stunted the Darwinian development of women. The timing is exactly right for Lillian to hold that idea. Maybe it is but it doesn't mean we have to like or accept it. It gives logical grounding for her character though - so she's not just a "mean person".

I'm still wondering if the writers didn't take their cues directly from certain US situations. Here protesters supposedly threw "bricks" at police before the police decided to use tear gas, batons, rubber bullets, etc. There is a huge debate about respecting "diversity of tactics" with various groups lecturing other groups on the way to protest. There is are a lot of differing goals, resentments, attempts to hijack, etc. Lillian is almost a US character to me. When was the script written in relation to when all this stuff was going on in the US?? I doubt it had anything to do with MM. Well it's been building for about a year in the US, but it really got interesting starting around last September/October.

Are there differences when men write Lillian and when women write Lillian? 808 was Carol Hay...Lilian was portrayed nicely. 810 was Paul Aitken...she was a bitch to Julia and rude to Murdoch (I think) 812 was Michelle Ricci...this was the ep we all really didn't like her in. And I think this ep was also Ricci but IMDB doesn't say. She was tweeting earlier though about the episode. So...in other words there doesn't seem to be a connection there if the same female writer can portray Lilian as both a radical bitch and a nice girl.... hmm, so much for that theory... Maybe it's the directors?

Hmm, haven't thought about that will have to consult my writers spreadsheet and see who's written what ep. Interesting, Lillian Moss has been in four eps so far and she'll be in the last three as well. She was introduced in an ep written by Carol Hay, the next was Paul Aitken and the last two were by Michelle Ricci. So three out of four were written by women. Oooh for some reason I thought she was only going to be in one more ep and that was part of the argument that she couldn't possibly be a permanent cast member.

At the risk of sounding US-self-important, this is pretty epic social upheaval here, and Yannick at least regularly goes down to LA. I imagine some news of what goes on in the US trickles across the border.

I thought that too CC...for Ontario that was really bad timing for this particular episode. I agree about George. I keep thinking of the bloopers video where George calls Wm. about 'matters of the heart'. That's either Edna or Emily, I'd think. I only noticed tonight that Lillian is listed in the credits with the regular cast....does that mean she's not just passing through? The bloopers real might have just been a totally made up scene, though - Yannick and Helene trolling shippers. Why was it bad timing in Ontario? Is Ontario super conservative about "family values"? Interesting about Lillian in the credits! Monday was a holiday in Ontario- Family Day, activities everywhere devoted to families doing things together. That just served to make some people even more sensitive to the episode's ending. A couple of fans had the right idea and used it as a talking point with their kids. But as CC indicated, good on them for not catering to that mentality. Hmmm...I guess they could have made that scene up. Didn't consider that!

Oooh that's going to be interesting. I'm not sure how men handled such things circa 1902. This certainly gives Brackenreid some blackmail power over her as well. Perhaps that's why he chooses to do nothing. This gives him a way of keeping her in line. My guess is men in 1902 handled such things by choosing to ignore them until they couldn't or needed to use the information as leverage to achieve some other goal. Brax said he "doesn't want to know" and that he "wants to see her remain as coroner". It was also Charlie giving him the information so there are a lot of conflicting emotions and loyalties going on with Brax even though he put the fellow on a slow boat to Auckland. I'm very proud of the Inspector with this one. My feeling is this is the 'real' Brackenreid. He chooses the 'right path' even when it's difficult. He and William are quite alike, they just use very different methods to arrive at the same answer. I loved Brackenreid in this episode. We saw a side to him we haven't seen much of before...less bluster, calmer with more knowledge and experience coming through. He called George, George! Awwwwww. He was right to say something to Emily as soon as he got wind of it...he didn't threaten her or lecture her...just kind of left it to her to decide what her next move would be if anything.

I can work with that. My issue with Lillian until now has been her unreasonable aggression and condescension towards people she doesn't know. That was absent in this episode. In the end she was almost on the defensive..."I am not a toy". I like people who know their minds. I just hate when some feel the need to stomp on others in pursuit of their agenda. This is exactly why she rubbed me the wrong way. I couldn't stand her attitude towards people when she didn't know them and her only reason for her opinion was because they were married. Totally unreasonable. Tonight she was quite tolerable and dare I say it, I actually liked her. We'll see about the future though!! I don't like Lillian, just because I find her rude and abrasive but her, "I'm not a toy" remark threw me off. At this point in time I'm not at all sure that Emily is NOT treating her like a toy. If Emily is experimenting and testing limits then it could be Lillian who gets hurt in the end. Just no telling where this goes from here.

I suspect if Brackenreid hadn't said anything to Emily she wouldn't have made that move, or at least not yet. I wonder if Lillian was waiting for Emily to make a move. She's looked like she was going to make a move herself for some time but perhaps she didn't want to force the issue and waited for Emily.

The Ferguson Riots and other events certainly made our news and we are aware of it, but in the same way that the situation in the Middle East and other major events get covered. Since Canada is the primary market, the MM writers are very attuned to events here which strike a cord with Canadian viewers, such as references to the Ford Brothers. There has also been a lot of attempts to raise awareness in regard to mental illness, which may very well have been the catalyst for The Incurables........
