Shows are finished at least two months before they air. There is no re-editing going on..... They didn't finish filming until late November, so the later episodes were being worked on while the new season was underway. Also, I believe the re-editing information has come from the official CBC source...... I actually prefer it if they aren't re-editing after the fact. As I've said, I'm not crazy about the men's and the women's spheres this season, but it's done. I hope it's different next season. I'll keep watching this season (still my favorite show) but I hope balance is restored next season.

I'll keep watching this season (still my favorite show) but I hope balance is restored next season. I think the balance was lost by the feeling that everyone needs to be dating someone, which means MM has to spin out to follow everyone's separate love lives now. If we have to save one, I would vote for Emily's just because it's "edgy" (Crumpets!!!). But then again, Emily can STAND ALONE as a NEW WOMAN! I said so before, and I'll say it again. There's something poignant about George being always lonely, too. Perhaps he could have a string of failed date attempts - that could always be an in-joke. Anyway, I think too many separate "family affairs" deviates from the main thread of the story, and MM needs every second it can get devoted to that story. The great detail of the mystery plots is one of the things that really makes MM great! But what about Julia? Well, once upon a time Julia was PART of those mystery plots. And the audience would prefer she should be part of those mystery plots again. But there is the whole "romantic separation" issue, so I'll leave that sticky wicket to the MM writers to figure out.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. It's starting to look like a soap opera, if it carries on this way for too much longer I may have to quit watching, I don't do soaps. We had three plots in the last ep and one of them could have been dispensed with other than where it intersected with the mystery and the other was completely unnecessary. It seems the writers deem the male characters so important that they have to have them doing something even if it's completely stupid! If one of the secondary characters has to have a love interest I vote for George. Maybe that's why they tried to ship George and Emily in the first place, 'two ships' in one story, saving time for the main storyline. When it was obvious it wasn't going to work out they sent Emily off in another direction and now don't know what to do with her. Unfortunately for the actress she really isn't necessary at all though I suspect she was brought in to get Helene Joy out of the morgue, she's way too squeamish. The main thing they need to do for next season is make Julia important to the storylines again. They seem to think that female viewers want her in a shipper role, in actual fact we want her in both the shipper role and her original strong female character, neither of which have to be exclusive. Julia and William have always worked well together despite their relationship or lack thereof, they are professionals either way.

They seem to think that female viewers want her in a shipper role, in actual fact we want her in both the shipper role and her original strong female character, neither of which have to be exclusive. Julia and William have always worked well together despite their relationship or lack thereof, they are professionals either way. First - aw. I hope it doesn't come to that. But I think that is the danger of trying to ship everyone at the same time. The irony is the writers are probably there saying "we don't do soaps!" as well, but they stooped to do fan service because of some pressure from somewhere. Even PM said you never give the fans what they say they want. It's the job of the writers to deliver a great story. You're right about Emily, too - and I think Georgina was kind of set up by being given a role that was more or less exactly Julia's. So whenever Julia gets close to the morgue, Emily seems like a third wheel. It sucks Helene is squeamish, though, because everyone wants Julia back in the morgue in order to keep her more relevant to William's cases! Psychologist roles are boring unless they are weird or tormented in some way. Dr. Sexy Beard was weird. I keep thinking there must be ways to make her role more interesting, though, since this is THE age of Freud/Jung, and, IMHO one of the things that allows MM to cross over from Police Procedural into Cult TV (remember my "noir charmant" theory?) is the use of Jungian symbolism skillfully blended within the stories themselves. This was one of the things that was really well done during the first 4 seasons. Anyway, I'm thinking Julia's presence as a psychologist could somehow heighten the use of visions, dreamscapes, and other surrealist aspects of the show. That has the potential to be really cool - but again, it's a matter of execution. ITA about making Julia somehow important to the storylines. But William also doesn't have to go overboard with gratitude for her every contribution. I thought he was almost too constantly grateful in Unfinished Business. That's pretty amusing considering how he's just gotten around to noticing how George has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty all these years. It was obvious William felt "on notice" to acknowledge Julia's contributions. Things should be a little more natural than that.

This episode is definitely an homage to horror... I wonder if anyone anyone else is coming back that we're not expecting!

Since Julia's been at the Women's Hospital, I seem to recall they've often shown patients in the background, holding dolls, talking to dolls, talking to imaginary dolls, etc. It's still a very common sight in sections of nursing homes housing dementia patients. So it may just be a "visual" to remind us (viewers) that the women are not Ok. But, hey, it's MM anything could happen

So far I've regonized Charlotte from Me Myself and Murdoch, and that old lady murderess from "Murdoch on the Corner" (she's the one that remarks on the rarety of gentlemanly behavior these days) and of course Miz Pearce. (and of course it's a dark and stormy night)
