I think it's going to marginalize both William and Julia since it will be mostly flashback to William's earlier life! The question is...what occasions these flashbacks? Maybe William gets a knock on the head and gets some attention from naughty nurse Julia... Meeting the priest that mentored him is what occasions the flashbacks. Booo, no naughty nurse then...

That's my theory too. He comes to town, they have dinner, reminisce...Julia gets curious and starts asking questions... Or at least, that's how I hope it goes, anyway. Whatever-I'm with you in that I'm taking them as they come this season. From the CBC schedule: Murdoch revisits his past when a murder investigation at a church reunites him with the priest (Peter Outerbridge) who mentored him as a young altar boy. lol, I wish they said teacher at his Jesuit school or something. Mentors of Catholic altar boys give me the chills.

Even if it's trite, I kind of like the "fell down a well and hit his head" scenario...

Mentors of Catholic altar boys give me the chills. If you read the book, you'd know that the priest is not a cuddly type. He's a Civil War vet with issues, yet who has also patiently taken a young William under his tutelage. It's not a relationship with feels, but I think that the priest recognized something in William and tried to foster it to the best of his own limited abilities. To be honest, I wish it weren't a book for a literacy project, because it didn't go that deep-when it could have-and it really would have been cool.

I liked Staircase to Heaven once I figured out what the cards meant. I think they should have given us a hint of what Heaven meant to William, though. Then that episode would have made a lot more sense. I couldn't understand why William thought heaven was wonderful when all he saw was himself with cards. Maybe it totally went over my head ... every time I've watched it! Ya, I didn't get that part either. Shouldn't heaven have involved God, Jesus, maybe his mother???

Perhaps Maureen should expand it for the rest of us.

Father Keegan was written as coming to the priesthood later in life, potentially after the sudden death of his wife and child(ren). What I do like is that this novella is an episode in itself, unfortunately it will have to tie into 'modern day' 1902.

Ya, I didn't get that part either. Shouldn't heaven have involved God, Jesus, maybe his mother??? We just didn't see that part. That's why the episode confused the heck out of everyone. We also didn't see the point where he had the *opportunity* to see Heaven. It looks like he goes directly back to the bathtub.

Yes he does, perhaps I'm just too literal and can't read anything into his explanation other than it was a game of chance that was used to 'decide' who the traveller was.

Of course this episode comes around just around the time I'm finishing up the timeline. I sense some pre-series edits coming up!

Not sure how this ep is going to play out based on tonight's preview. At least it seems like Julia joins William as he reminisces with the priest...and they are smiling!
