Good viewing figures from last night:
(I bought the second to last calendar in a store at Yonge and Bloor today....the sales clerk said that was the third one that day, it was selling very well, and she was a fan.....she missed last night's broadcast, but a friend taped it for her.....)

I enjoyed the wee touches like the santa hat on the skeleton in the morgue, character called Robert Cratchet. Overall very good. And Aunt Azelia goosing William as he went by........ Loved William's reaction too!

That's fantastic!!!! How long is xmas break? We return January 4th! OMG, I had such a busy couple of weeks, I totally lost track of the MM date. Off to look for it now... (Wa, I didn't buy the crumpets or the chocolate liqueur. I'll have to make due with the remains of absinthe...)

I just finished watching it on Alibi. Even though it's not a real episode it all seems very in character and fits with the characters in S9. It's really cute, funny, everyone had plenty to do, adorable W/J, Julia being on form, and it will get you in the mood for Christmas. Rebecca wasn't in it, but with it being shown in most countries before S9 then those viewers wouldn't have a clue who she was. Though it is a spoiler about Emily being gone and Julia being the coroner again. Why isn't a "real episode"?

Hey Guys, I just wanted to say I'm sorry for not jumping into these discussions sooner this half of the season. And being pretty much AWOL in general. I've moved house twice within the past three months so often times the first time I get a chance to watch an episode is when I watch with my mom the Tuesday evening. I'm hoping this will change in the new year and I get a chance to watch the episode earlier so I can get my thoughts up sooner, and of course get back and participating in discussions more. Anyway, I'll be watching later tonight for the first time again...ugh. Anyway-until then Becca Aw, sucks to be moving so much. So stressful!

Oh, that was grand! Much more atmospheric than I was expecting - there was some holiday schmaltz but the mystery didn't take second place. I thought they did a very good job of balancing out the fanciful with the realistic aspects of the story. Everyone had something to add to the show and there were solid performances across the board. I would like to know how Brackenreid's father found out about Krampus - I understood that to be a Germanic myth.
Some of my favorite little bits (which I don't thnk will spoil anything): Mary Pickford being a chatterbox Murdoch working on the tree The nod to The Shining towards the end

Okay, I think that was possibly my favourite episode so far this season.
Loved all the allusions to other christmas movies/things.
Murdoch was just adorable okay? I just loved the whole thing with the lights. OH AND THE SNOWBALL SCENE (both of them actually)
And George my big puppy come here for a hug
That punch pun, oh my. Julia fighting. That was just yes. I DIDN"T KNOW I NEEDED THIS SCENE IN MY LIFE UNTIL I SAW IT!
Im gonna be watching this episode again and again and again and again...

That was really good! I think the Christmas season, with its "vintage" feel and all the associated symbolism, is well-suited to MM. The fact it was a holiday special made me think that MM has more than a touch of Disney Saturday Night Movies in it.
The mystery was quite good. I only partially guessed the murderer about halfway through, and that was only for logistical reasons. I didn't have any clue about the motive even though in a sense it was telegraphed from the start. That's the best sort of mystery: one that you don't guess but seems well-constructed after the fact.
It was creepy when Krampus ran by! It reminded me of that scene in the movie Signs when you first glimpse an alien. In speaking of creepy, I was also suspicious of that kid who was the first Krampus witness.
William and Julia were very touchy-feely, but this didn't seem like fan service at all to me. The "unwrap me" moment was still great even though I knew it was coming from the previews.
Regarding George: what happened to his mother? Why didn't he consider spending Christmas with her? That's the only loophole I caught.
Margaret really knows how to handle the Inspector! She gets such great lines that she never feels like a side character. I'm not usually a fan of the "family and children" subplots, but this one worked well since it factored into the main storyline.
Julia Woman of Action! 'nuff said.
Alex Reda was killing it, wardrobe wise. MM hasn't looked this good since the Girl Gang episode.
The first scene is going to remind me of Christmas from now in (like A Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, or A Charlie Brown Christmas). Wearing a top hat in a sleigh + snogging your lady friend = instant classic.

Yes, this episode is highly re-watchable: in tone it harkins back to the best of Season 6. Julia was a Woman of Action in numerous ways. Did you catch her driving the sleigh as well? I bet no one dared argue. lol at Superfail!Murdoch with the Christmas lights. Sometimes I think the writers push "adorkable" a bit too far, but this episode had a nice balance of different elements of William's personality. Because of William's earlier comment about the candle fire hazard, are we meant to infer that William invented Christmas tree lights...? We may have to hold him responsible for those super-gaudy Christmas houses...

ITA about the balance. I also think this was delightful enough that they should rerun this movie even after the TV show has run its course. Yikes - The Shining! I totally didn't make that association. I thought it was funny the way Mary Pickford kept trying to grab the spotlight even in the course of doing Christmas good: in a way this underscored the Inspector's feelings about the hypocrisy of Christmas. So bummed I didn't make the "chocolate nog" for this event...

So bummed I didn't make the "chocolate nog" for this event... It wasn't that it was hypocrisy, it was the irony of a silent film star, whose acting career effectively ended with talkies, being told to stop talking! Y'know, "chocolate nog" can be enjoyed with a re-watch as much as with an original viewing!

Though it is a spoiler about Emily being gone and Julia being the coroner again. Why isn't a "real episode"? It's not really a part of S9, it's just an in character special. It's separate to the rest of the main timeline of the show, like The Murdoch Effect, The Infernal Device, On the Case, and the Toronto Gazette Archival footage videos. Fun extras to MM, but you don't need to take them seriously. A couple of other shows have done the same kind thing this year, Saving Hope and Sherlock have standalone specials, too.
