Maybe Brackenreid's father was a German immigrant? ITA about the balance. I also think this was delightful enough that they should rerun this movie even after the TV show has run its course. Yikes - The Shining! I totally didn't make that association. I thought it was funny the way Mary Pickford kept trying to grab the spotlight even in the course of doing Christmas good: in a way this underscored the Inspector's feelings about the hypocrisy of Christmas. So bummed I didn't make the "chocolate nog" for this event... It wasn't that it was hypocrisy, it was the irony of a silent film star, whose acting career effectively ended with talkies, being told to stop talking! Y'know, "chocolate nog" can be enjoyed with a re-watch as much as with an original viewing! lol, I didn't catch the "talkies" irony, either!

JOYFUL FESTIVUS FELLOW MYSTERIANS!!Yes, yes, I know, I'm late. This is what comes of living at the bottom of the world... Let's get to it then. A pretty decent mystery, although by halfway through I could guess who the culprit was. I liked the addition of Kris Kringle and I loved the nod to 'A Christmas Carol' (Robert Cratchit) and to Dr. Seuss (The Lynch who stole Christmas? ) The snowball fights were hilarious. And the constables and George's aunts and everything. Julia is hilarious. "Unwrap me, William!" I almost DIED! The one thing I'd love to know: You think all those boxes had actual presents in them, for the cast and the crew and the extras? Or just colourful boxes? I loved the Brackenreid family. So cute! And Thomas getting the train for his little boy. I love that he had to break into a toyshop to do it! I'm not sure that there's much else to say...Pity there isn't a corresponding New Year's episode, too...

Hey Guys, I just wanted to say I'm sorry for not jumping into these discussions sooner this half of the season. And being pretty much AWOL in general. I've moved house twice within the past three months so often times the first time I get a chance to watch an episode is when I watch with my mom the Tuesday evening. I'm hoping this will change in the new year and I get a chance to watch the episode earlier so I can get my thoughts up sooner, and of course get back and participating in discussions more. Anyway, I'll be watching later tonight for the first time again...ugh. Anyway-until then Becca I have missed you! But it is understandable that you have been pretty busy! Merry Christmas to you and your family.

I forgot to mention this in my previous post.
I love "The Little Match Girl". One of my favourite stories. It's so short, but I love it anyway.

I've decided I'm going to end my busy day rewatching The Christmas Caper. Got my peppermint bark to nibble on and I have discovered that Gingerbread Kahlua is an excellent addition to egg nog (in my Bloody Hell mug)!!

Peter Mitchell posted this on FB the other day. We've caught several of the references but I don't know all of these movies well enough to catch them in the show.

December 22 at 12:29am
References include A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street, The Shining, It's a Wonderful Life, The Grinch that Stole Christmas, A Christmas Story, The Little Match Girl, Frosty the Snowman, A Charlie Brown Christmas, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, The Hockey Sweater and probably a few more I can't recall... The whole connection with the Krampus movie was a happy accident.
Anybody willing to help me out?
A Christmas Carol- Margaret calling Thomas "Ebeneezer", Robert Kratchet, the crippled boy Miracle on 34th Street- Kris Kringle 'delusion' The Little Match Girl- the play It's a Wonderful Life- George on the bridge How the Grinch Stole Christmas- "the Lynch who stole Christmas"
I'll add another one..."Woman of the house" comes from a lovely movie called "The Quiet Man" starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.
