You've got to love Michelle Ricci. She understands the characters as a fan as well as a writer. Michelle, Yannick and Helene all agree that Julia is the trailblazer and William her willing partner, knowing he needs to expand his experience beyond his comfort zone. Such is the power of love.

Apparently some people thought I was a hippie when I was in college. Wasn't really, just dressed the part.

No dresses for me! Bell bottom jeans with velvet inserts, tapestry full length coat (which I wanted to give to Rebecca but my mother gave away!) Not sure I ever did tie dye. This was the end of the hippie period btw.

That tapestry coat sounds awesome.

I'm a Fire Pig. Apparently I'm not too bright, like to sleep and eat, I'm lazy and clumsy BUT...... I don't make plans to hurt anyone (I guess that just happens because of the aformentioned clumsiness). Soooooo, really glad I read that today. Going to have lunch and go back to bed. depressed. Aw, lol. Earth Rooster sucks, too. On the bright side, MM once more impelled us to read up on something cool - Chinese astrology! I knew I was a Rooster, but I never realized there was an elemental sign as well.

Oh another thing. Opium isn't declared illegal until 1908... Still waiting for the Vin Mariani! (Like William needs any sort of mental boost, lol...)

Eh. Not much more to say really. I'm finding this true even for eps I consider good. I'm certain it's not because marriage kills the interest, though. I do think the episodes leading up to the marriage were a "super arc" that allowed for all sorts of speculation and planning on William and Julia's behalf. I believe our two mightiest threads were celebrating William's pervy behavior (as it related to the relationship arc) and planning the wedding. I don't think romance-to-marriage is the only type of arc, though. I also suspect MM writers try to steer clear of arcs: someone (PM?) used to say they wanted the episodes to be able to air in different orders in syndication. Revenge is often a great arc. Perhaps someone does something to William that merits revenge. Then he has to make a moral choice about whether to take revenge or not. Or...maybe my excommunication plot finally comes to pass!!!

I have all the MM dvd's and I've always been sad that they don't include deleted scenes or the web series. That is something missing from them. Awwwwwwwwww! I always thought half the purpose of DVDs - particularly sets - was to include "Extras".

I am extremely interested to know where they got the opium paraphernalia for this episode. I assume they rented it/borrowed it from an antiques shop?
A lot of antique opium paraphernalia was destroyed by the Chinese government in the 1950s and 60s as it was trying to abolish the practice of smoking opium. So whatever exists would've been whatever's been stored in antiques shops and museums.
Opium pipes are now very popular souvenirs in China. I have two.

I see it's up to the Chinese guy in the forum to explain this, then. The Chinese Zodiac has twelve animals. In no particular order: Dragon, Horse, Mouse/Rat, Rabbit (me! Whoo hoo!) Ox/bull, Snake, Boar/hog/pig, Goat/Sheep, Dog, Monkey, Rooster, Tiger. There is a specific order they go in, but I'm too lazy to look it up. Anyway, they work in a twelve year cycle. The animals are each matched up to a particular element or material. The traditional elements are of course, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. The other materials are wood and metal. All these things change every twelve years. Much like in Western Zodiac, each animal (like Leo or Capricorn etc) is meant to have certain personality traits. For example, Rabbits are meant to be creative, among other things. The year you're born in determines the animal sign you have, and the traits that you're supposed to grow up with. Some people take this extremely seriously, as with Western astrology, others just have fun with it. I subscribe to the latter camp. There is an origin story about the Twelve Animals. It's sorta fun to read. Looking forward to when George discovers the I Ching and tells everyone's fortune!!!! Thanks for this - I love the educational aspects of MM.

A redundant dragon more like. It probably means you're supposed to be volatile/fierce. Whereas I'm supposed to be grounded/stabilized. So you're Brax and I'm Murdoch. There's the 4 elements + metal (gold). But yeah, not sure what that one is supposed to mean. Luck? Yeah, when I did a cursory search for golden dragons, I basically just got a list of Chinese restaurants. I suppose I might find out more with some diligent research, but I just can't be bothered right now. OMG - you not only get your own animal and element - you get your own restaurant as well!

This ep is second-viewing worthy! It looked to me like William was well on his way to undoing the cockblock himself before the 5-clawed dragon got between them! Watched it again and enjoyed it even more. I quite enjoyed the racial undertones of the day and the Orientalism. The remix of cultures is one of the best parts of the time period (accelerated because of mass travel via steamship and train). Where's the trip to Japaaaaaaaaaan!
