The disguise made sense, I just overanalyze things. 😊 For instance, where exactly did she get the disguise from? Has she kept it all this time (Victor, Victorian)? It also felt odd to see Station House 4 get the temporary inspector, but then never used. I understand they wanted to focus on the main 4, but it felt... underused? The Chief Constable goes missing and no one seems to worry? (How DID Brackenreid shoot off a gun w/o anyone knowing, then drag the man somewhere to keep him hostage?)
I never felt anyone outside of Julia/George/Brackenreid were invested in finding the real killer or who killed Jackson. Where was Higgins' desire to find out who killed his friends? Rebecca James seemed tagged on just to say she was in it. The more I think about it, the more it unravels a bit for me. But in general, an entertaining episode.

So, I've only had a chance to watch it once, but any thoughts on Miss Cherry? Or did I miss that part? No mention of her......I wonder if she'll reappear.....PM has hinted so might be....

It took me over 24 hours to find a link to watch, but at least I'd avoided spoilers while waiting. We guessed months ago it would be Jackson who died so that wasn't as sad as it should be. It was also too obvious in the episode that George and Brackenreid weren't dead. Though it was nice seeing the core 4 working as a team and it was great to see Hodge, I hope he pops up again.
But it seems PM didn't learn a thing from all the viewer complaints last season and he's still spending too much screen time on guest and recurring characters and pointlessly shoehorning Nina and the burlesque club into the show. He also promised us more W/J romance and there was barely any in the episode which felt wrong. I hope Watts won't be staying for long because he really isn't needed. This ep was better than the S10 finale, but it wasn't perfect.

Julia stole her captives clothes and she'd already used a male disguise years earlier, so she knew how to do it. She probably stole the captors money and bought the other necessary bits in a local store. I loved how she took care of her own part of things and beat up the bad guy. Rebecca and Higgins should've been used more and been more involved in the plan. Higgins wasn't involved at all which didn't feel right and Rebecca is underused in general. With Jackson gone, Higgins should rightfully be getting utilized more in the plots. I hope he will and that there won't be a needless replacement constable this season. Davis has been jailed hasn't he? Brackenreid was still calling his Chief Constable, but he surely can't have gotten away with attempted murder etc.

One of my favourite little tidbits was seeing Hodge again! YUSH! I might have squeed a little bit!

Overall I enjoyed the episode. I did feel though it was a bit rushed and would have benefited from a two part opening. But eh. I'm trying to be a bit less nitpicky this year and just trying to enjoy the eps.
Where did Julia hide all her hair? I intially thought she'd cut it but then viola it appears! And I'm wondering how she managed to stuff it all under that wig LIKE HOW I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS WITCHCRAFT
If I said anything not too nice about Nina Bloom in the past I take it back right now - she is awesome. Not as awesome as Julia. But almost. Totally here for ladies kicking butt. (literally in Julia's case)
I was happy to see Hodge again! I totally squeeed when he came up to Crabtree & Brackenreid.
I have a feeling that the property developer guy - Robert Graham will come back later in the season as the new recurring villian as Murdoch & Co were unable to get a charge of murder/confession. However I doubt CC Davis can smooze his way after this one.

This episode was very interesting. I found it fast-paced, exciting, entertaining and funny. I liked all the tie-ups to the various loose-threads from the closer of the previous season.
I would be very interested to hear what happens to CC Davis, and who becomes the new CC. (Giles again? I doubt it, but eh...)
Having Hodge back was really great, although I don't see him becoming a constable again, it would be nice to see him in other roles in the series (perhaps his bar becomes a hangout for the boys? Perhaps he becomes an informant or something?).
Looking forward to the next episode! I saw the trailer and it looks fascinating.

Only comment from me is, the episode felt a little rushed. My thinking is, it should have been a multiple episode, or possibly even full season arc.

I literally had the same thought about her hair...where did it go? I have the same thought regarding Graham...methinks he manages to weasel out somehow.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Yee ha, what a ride! It was so jam packed that I can see how people felt it was a bit rushed but I didn't mind. I was at the viewing party so I initially missed whose body was still in the morgue to be buried later on. I nearly had a heart attack when Jackson and Crabtree's pictures were being put up.
The writing was very tight and clever IMO. The way Graham and Murdoch's conversation at the beginning was repeated at the end when the tables were turned was fantastic! My fave line was Julia saying "Look at us, all together. That means we're going to win". That is MM in a nutshell.
Good on Rebecca for saving George!
Watts is really growning on me. We don't actually need a second detective at SH4 but I am content to have him stick around awhile because he's a nice counterpoint to William.
I've always liked Nina and I knew she was only playing Graham for payback. Loved it when she pulled the knife on him.
HODGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bamfy Julia is back!!!!! Just so fantastic to see her escape on her own. Peter Mitchell has cleared up the mystery of who was watching Jackson's funeral from up on the hill. He says it was Julia and she was hoping his funeral was part of the overall ruse. It was nearly impossible to get it was Julia since we had no idea where her escape fit into the timeline.
Brackenried vs Davis...and it's Brackenried for the win! No surprise and just look how the miserable coward crumbled. There is no way he can remain CC after this. Here's a thought. What if Brackenreid is promoted to CC, William to Inspector and Watts stays as Detective? They are working on a completely different filming schedule this season so there will be episodes where we don't see core cast.
I'm not sure if Graham is going to wiggle his way out. It is possible though and then we have a new nemesis for William.
It's quite obvious from the preview for next week that the vast majority of resolution has been completed. Now all we have to wait for is how the pieces come together.

Great episode. Enjoyed everyone's part in it. I read about people mentioning Game of Thrones. Did I miss something, because I never watched Game of Thrones? I cheered when Hodges made an appearance. Glad to see Watts will be sticking around. I like him. I kind of hoped to see Miss Cherry in this, but maybe she will make a future appearance. I was worried for a sec Nina would off Graham and end up in jail! Glad she didn't 'cause I'd like to see her end up owning the burlesque club!

I have been wondering if it was worth coming back to the board given the treatment I received but to hell with the people that don't like me, they can pi** off. I was here first.
Opinions stated in this review are mine and mine alone!
Where to start on the season premiere? I LOVED it, especially when I finally got to sit down and watch and LISTEN and you had to listen, the dialogue was the best part, so many great lines. I can't believe the mess was wrapped up in one episode but glad it was, now we can move on to 1905.
The way each surviving character was introduced was wonderful and of course I appreciated Hodge's cameo. I got the impression the pub was his as he said it was 'getting there'. Hope we see more of him and his pub, maybe it will become Brackenreid's regular watering hole.
Julia's escape was ... typical BAMFY Julia. I like when she gets action and Brackenreid's comment to Williams about locking him in a room with her was spot on. I also wondered what she did with all that hair, I almost thought Helene had cut it in real life. I have to admit that IMO J doesn't make a very convincing man but given the times no one would suspect a woman would dress like that so perhaps the clothes do make the man.
I'm finally coming around to Nina, but not necessarily as George's girlfriend. I figured from the start that she was out to get Graham, I couldn't see her taking up with him after his involvement in Lydia's death.
I like Watts and I thought he would play a big part in W's release, he's proving himself to be a great detective with pretty good instincts. I still think he's one too many characters and I'm not happy he's sticking around though I wouldn't mind one or two, at most, episodes with him in.
I was really surprised they didn't make more use of Rebecca, not because I thought she could do much but because they do like all these secondary characters these days.
I'm glad Penelope Marsh turned out to be an honest woman and not Williams lackey. Someone on fb wondered why she was needed but I think a woman was definitely right for the position she was given. I doubt a man would have taken the trouble to read about W's exploits and form an independent opinion. I feel a man would have been more likely to just get on with the job he was given. Miss Marsh seemed to be intrigued by W's character and integrity and it was obvious that he's earned the loyalty of the people around him.
Glad to see Davis is going to get the justice he deserves, though I can't help liking the character. Richard Clarkin is a great actor and plays Davis chillingly well as the man you love to hate, I bet he had fun.
Not much to say about George, I didn't believe he was dead as he's too integral to the core group and losing one constable was bad but George would have ended the show for too many people. Of course if JH wanted to leave nothing could be done. The reunion with W was surprising given George's habit of frustrating him. However as W thought he was dead I guess it was a pleasant surprise, but a little over the top IMO.
A quick word about Henry Higgins. I've always liked Henry as he was always the voice of reason to George's flights of fancy but all that changed and I felt the writers were doing him a disservice. Yes, he was young, green and lazy but not a thief or a cad. I'm hoping the writers will bring him back to the character we had in the earlier seasons. It certainly lookes like he's grown a little from his experiences of late.
I figured Brackenreid would get the jump on Davis but thought he'd have his own gun. A bit dumb going into that situation unarmed. I wonder if he would have gone back and killed Davis, I doubt anyone would realize it was him and he'd probably get away with it.
The less said about Williams and Graham the better, hopefully Graham gets his due from the testimony of the others.
And now to William. Well, he got himself into this mess and it's lucky he's got good friends to get him out of it. Someone said W didn't do much, how could he until he was free to move about? When he finally could do something he was his usual masterful self. I like this new W, there was a hardness to him we haven't seen before and it suits him, and yet he still had compassion for Davis. W was never naive but he did have an innocence about him despite his job, I think that innocence was lost in the last two episodes. His threat to Miss Marsh should she not be truthful about helping him was the first time I remember him threatening a woman that wasn't a criminal. I loved the commanding way he put Graham down and when George apologized for hitting Graham W's reply was chillingly unlike him in content and tone. I can't help but play that over and over and every time I pump my fist and say "YES!" I loved the way the last scene of Hell to Pay was repeated with the roles reversed, quite apropos I think.
All in all a very satisfying episode that I can watch again and again and not get tired of. It showed just how well these four friends work together and why we don't need more in the core group. I hope the remainder of the season lives up to the start.
Peter Mitchell, believe it or not you're one, if not my favourite, writer. I think you outdid yourself with this episode!

The problem with making Brackenreid CC and Murdoch Inspector, is that it would go against one of the main premises & historical aspects of the series, that being William is as high as he can get in the Toronto Constabulary because of him being Catholic, and if he didn't become Inspector, it would be Brackenreid who refused to promote him.....
With both of the last 2 CCs ending up in jail, I think I'd consider getting Davis' replacement from outside the organization.....

They've gone against history having Murdoch as a detective in the first place. If I remember rightly the first Catholic to become a detective was in the 1920's.
