I did see in the TV-Eh interview that PM admitted they were (in my words) awash in secondary characters so maybe they didn't realize how many had sneaked in. They don't seem to be getting rid of any though! Perhaps some will disappear this season, Miss Cherry perhaps. I see Rebecca James wasn't included in the group photo this season so maybe her role will be reduced. Perhaps they took note of our complaints that she'd turned Julia into a one line character in the morgue - there again, probably not.
From TV-Eh.com:
Q: How, then, did you decide who it was going to be?
A: Fan loyalty, number of years on the show, Kristian had some other opportunities … Daniel Maslany [Detective Watts] has a bigger presence on the show this year, our cast was starting to get large, large, large and I think we served Kristian well and he served us well. There were no hard feelings or anything like that, it’s just what happens.

Good episode as long as you don't dwell too long on some of the plot points. (Julia being dressed as a man was one in particular that was an intriguing idea but created a few unanswered questions.) Also realized at the end that they didn't really do anything what I would call 'Murdochian' in either episode. They used his recording device and he took fingermarks, but there wasn't anything 'invented' that helped Murdoch. This was a straight drama that didn't feel particularly specific to 'Murdoch Mysteries'. And as much as I enjoy Shantelle Bisson's enthusiasm, there was no way this was their "Game of Thrones" moment (killing off Jackson). I think most people saw that coming a mile away, and out of the 5 who were in peril, Jackson was arguably the most expendable. Still, decent start to the new season. Murdoch better build that house, though, before the hotel kicks them out! There have always been plot holes, some glaring ones, but that's what suspension of disbelief is for. It's a crime drama not a documentary. If they explained all the plot holes the show would be twice as long and probably not as compelling.

Lol, I don't think a show has to be a documentary to not have a lot of obvious plot holes. I'd argue crime dramas especially become less compelling when things don't make sense; the fun is trying to piece it together with the characters, and that's hard if it's not a coherent story.
But in the case of this particular episode, for me they weren't glaring enough to impede my enjoyment. This was a good opener. Poor Jackson, but he was always going to be the one to go. Kristian won't have a hard time finding work, he's great. He didn't get so many opportunities to shine here, but on shows like Orphan Black.
I loved Julia dressing up like a guy again, throwback to one of my favorite moments in early MM.

So, it was Williams who had the constables shot, then?

There was no word on how that will effect her availability for MM.

I keep meaning to ask this, and I keep forgetting to...
Miss Marsh. That lady who took over the running of SH4 temporarily.
Did she appear in any other episodes? I keep thinking like I've seen her before somewhere, and I can't remember where or why. Or is it my memory playing tricks on me?

I've long been a fan of hers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Yee ha, what a ride! It was so jam packed that I can see how people felt it was a bit rushed but I didn't mind. I was at the viewing party so I initially missed whose body was still in the morgue to be buried later on. I nearly had a heart attack when Jackson and Crabtree's pictures were being put up.
The writing was very tight and clever IMO. The way Graham and Murdoch's conversation at the beginning was repeated at the end when the tables were turned was fantastic! My fave line was Julia saying "Look at us, all together. That means we're going to win". That is MM in a nutshell.
Good on Rebecca for saving George!
Watts is really growning on me. We don't actually need a second detective at SH4 but I am content to have him stick around awhile because he's a nice counterpoint to William.
I've always liked Nina and I knew she was only playing Graham for payback. Loved it when she pulled the knife on him.
HODGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bamfy Julia is back!!!!! Just so fantastic to see her escape on her own. Peter Mitchell has cleared up the mystery of who was watching Jackson's funeral from up on the hill. He says it was Julia and she was hoping his funeral was part of the overall ruse. It was nearly impossible to get it was Julia since we had no idea where her escape fit into the timeline.
Brackenried vs Davis...and it's Brackenried for the win! No surprise and just look how the miserable coward crumbled. There is no way he can remain CC after this. Here's a thought. What if Brackenreid is promoted to CC, William to Inspector and Watts stays as Detective? They are working on a completely different filming schedule this season so there will be episodes where we don't see core cast.
I'm not sure if Graham is going to wiggle his way out. It is possible though and then we have a new nemesis for William.
It's quite obvious from the preview for next week that the vast majority of resolution has been completed. Now all we have to wait for is how the pieces come together.
Okay, so this is days late and I'm probably not going to say anything that hasn't already been said, but now that I've managed to outlast a certain toddler who constantly wants to be played with, read to, etc., here's my two cents. This was indeed a well-written episode with only one discernible plot hole as far as I can tell: Hodge pointed out somewhere that in 1018, both Williams and Graham managed to touch the weapon, which should mean that there should be two sets of prints on it. Is this a plot hole, or did the writers choose to ignore Graham's prints so that he can rise again in the future? Something tell me that this is not the last we've seen of Graham...I just hope he's more like a dark cloud hanging over them and not that he turns into another Gillies who enjoys torturing Julia to get to Murdoch. That's been done. Next. Okay, Watts has grown on me as well, and I hope that they integrate him into the show and not have him take away from it. I've also seen where Mouna Traore is now on a new series, and I worry that this means we won't see her anymore. Hopefully, she still makes the occasional appearance. I'm not sure why, but I wasn't buying George's death for a moment. I knew he was alive...and how awesome that they were all reunited at Hodge's bar! If he's out, that means Giles might be out as well...I would have loved to have seen him here, but I don't know where he would have fit in, tbh. I also knew Nina was playing Graham, but what I can't figure out is why did Graham take Miss Marsh to the Star Room? Was Graham planning on taking Nina in front of Miss Marsh? Why? Just for the creepy factor? BAMFY Julia and Nina FTW! Rebecca was pretty bad ass too. She's just a medical student but she kept her cool and performed the surgery to save George. Well played! Can I just say that I giggled when William drugged the douche cop? "I should get out of this" Julia referring to her disguise. "Are you sure that's wise?" William in response. Which raises the question, is William merely concerned about her safety (natch), but is he also aroused by Victor/Victoria? I honestly don't know... Neither Brax nor Julia getting the response that George got from William, lol! Yet, it worked for me and didn't seem at all unnatural. Our core four was back, and it was indeed glorious! Bravo!

So, it was Williams who had the constables shot, then? They never said......I wonder if that is the link that brings Graham down....

So, it was Williams who had the constables shot, then? The men that went to shoot them were outside the house that Williams was holding Julia hostage so it's likely it was him.

I have been wondering if it was worth coming back to the board given the treatment I received but to hell with the people that don't like me, they can pi** off. I was here first. Glad you're back my friend.
