That would be an excellent end to the show, in 20 years time! That's my story and I'm sticking with it. Then there would be another Detective Murdoch, their adopted son! So it could go on forever, like Dr. Who!

I have some adopted relatives and they are as much family members as the biological ones.....in one case, an adopted cousin is even more like family members than some of the others.....the whole nature vs nurture debate.....and in the time period, casual adoptions by childless couples was quite common place.
(My mother always had a suspicion she was adopted, mainly because of confusion around her birthdate and difficulty in getting her birth certificate.....the one she was issued as an adult had a slightly different date that what she believed her birthdate was and she believed it was the certificate for a cousin with the same name who died as a child.......)

We had family friends that were closer than family but for me Murdoch is the one we have now. When John Nettles left Midsomer Murders I stopped watching, it just wasn't the same.

All this reminds me of finding of 2 sets of skeletal remains of 2 Canadian WWI soldiers in Northern France......they managed to trace relatives and do some DNA testing to identify them.....one of the soldiers was identified in a very straightforward manner, but the other one wasn't....they'd had taken the sample from a nephew of the soldier they believed they were testing and it came back negative....they were pretty sure they were right, so they took a sample for a great niece descended from a different sibling and it came back positive.....turns out, the nephew's mother had been adopted into a large farm family and he never knew.....shades of Murdoch, one reason they were sure they had the right soldier was through facial identification comparing the skull to a photograph....I can picture a modern day Murdoch doing the comparison....

Does anyone know the name of the music for the Police Ball and who composed it or was it an ad hoc piece composed by the very talented MM crew just for this episode? I can provide an answer to this question! As I got in the car this morning to go to work, this music was playing on the classical music station. It's a serenade by Roman Hoffstetter, in the style of Haydn. In fact, it was attributed to Haydn for many years.

Which of course begs the question, could the show go on without Yannick Bisson? Even if it was his now adult son who took over as a detective? I find that hard to imagine.

I found a clip of it I downloaded a while back, a slightly different version, much fuller. I like the music and I listen to it from time to time. I loved it when I heard it at the police ball and enjoyed it whilst watching Henry and Paul Aitken strut their stuff on the dance floor. This music was the best part of the whole episode for me. I'll probably put this version on my cell phone so I can listen to it more often. Thanks.

Watching another episode 1. I crack up when William says "It appears you have violated the laws of physics!". He says it as if it's actually criminal. 2. George swore! Has he before this episode? 3. I just love when George gets riled up about something. He really stormed into the morgue with determination after Henry's comments on class. 4. I suppose Darcy's choice of words, "I think you should be with who you wish", was somewhat of a test. He'd hope she would turn up at the party he was attending. If not, that guy has a serious case of make up your mind. 5. I will always find it odd that no one bats an eye at those two kissing right in public. Plenty of people had to know who Julia was and that she was married to someone else.

See fanfiction.net...

If so Darcy wasn't too smart to give Julia the option. It was obvious he suspected she still had feelings for William. 5. I think most people (at least at SH4 anyway) knew how William felt about Julia. It was pretty obvious how she felt about him too as she showed up at the ball. It was quite scandalous for the time but it was also a private function.

There should be a top 10 list of best lines, but there are far, far more than 10. The private function was attended by people from many levels of the civil service and many dates from all level of society. I don't think anything done there could be considered hidden. It would be considered fair game for a gossip column.
