When does S8 start filming? I heard late May, on Yannick's birthday(!), and it seemed like Yannick is directing the first one...? Mount spy cams all over Toronto and track down Thomas Craig!

Better yet, I will go downtown and lurk in Pubs and hang around the sports fields.... then again, maybe that's not such a good idea after all. I'll probably run into Rob Ford instead!

So a bit of a "darker" season coming and 18 episodes again!!! Yay! I really hope is Thomas Craig is back in S8. I had a couple thoughts about "darker" directions, though the "gangs of Toronto" idea is pretty darned dark already - especially when mixed with government corruption and big business greed. I was watching The Adventure of Brisco County, Jr. because somewhere I read it was a precursor to genre-mixing steampunk shows like MM. It's a bit too silly for my taste. But the main characters are bounty hunters. I remember watching old Westerns about the heyday of the bounty hunters. I think this led too so much vigilante violence that the US govt had to make some laws that restricted bounty hunting some how...? Anyway, has MM ever really dealt with bounty hunting? What about rival bounty hunters? What about bounty hunters from foreign countries like the US? They could certainly cause some havoc for local law enforcement. Another dark theme would be the dark side of the industrial revolution: massive factory accidents or disasters on new forms of "mass" transportation or major engineering fails (building and bridge collapses). Sometimes the future outruns humanity. Labor movements were in part responses to massive disasters. Labor confrontations, especially strike-breaking, might involve violence on a massive scale. A massive disaster could lead to various contexts for criminal investigations: 1) Is some industrial magnate trying to blame an accident on industrial sabateurs, anarchists, unionizers, etc.? 2) Does someone want revenge on an industrial magnate for an accident caused by neglect or inhuman production goals? 3) Did someone steal industrial designs or technology under the cover of an accident? 4) Was an accident threatened for extortion money? Just a few "darker" thoughts. The stakes could be more personal if one of the main MM characters just happened to be involved closely enough to get a few scratches (like George and Henry in "War on Terror").

I think season 7 has far more humour so far. What I'm not a fan of is bringing back characters and carrying on a story line for too long. The Mentalist did it with Red John, Monk did it with the search for his wife#s killer and viewers get bored.

I think season 7 has far more humour so far. What I'm not a fan of is bringing back characters and carrying on a story line for too long. The Mentalist did it with Red John, Monk did it with the search for his wife#s killer and viewers get bored. Those long "arc" stories are a way to keep people checking on character progress every week: otherwise the viewer will feel each individual episode is "optional". If the viewers choose alternate shows from week to week, the show won't be stable enough to establish a market value (for commercials or subscribers) and maintain funding. Longterm romances do the same thing: that's why insisting that a romance be consummated is basically demanding an end to the show. If the show is good for reasons other than the romance, I think this moment of fan gratification is a high price to pay. Now that William and Julia are getting married, there needs to be some other arc for the show. Unfortunately, the ensemble cast is mostly humor sidekicks and aren't really suitable for epic romance. A recurring character might also hold things together. For instance, there was a "Paddy Glenn" (the reporter) arc in Season 4 that worked out well (IMHO). There could be a Ruby arc. One thing that really bothers me about William's increasing tendency to scold Julia is that it seems like he's moving toward treating Julia like Ruby: an interfering woman who might "insert herself" into HIS cases. I would like to see Ruby come back and demand some respect. I really like Emma Goldman's character, too. She would be an interesting recurring character. But if viewers get bored of arc stories, just think how easily they will wander off if just 2 episodes don't meet their own particular criteria for quality. That's especially a danger for MM since the show is always trying to please a lot of people. People who are bored by arcs might be bored by the serial format and television in general. Sometimes the problem is just the construction of a particular arc. Some shows have lost their audience when the arc became too sprawling to keep track of or too inconsistent to survive viewer nitpicking. Other arcs fail because they became repetitive: like the James Gillies escape-of-the-week.

No, I have to disagree. Individual stories work for me.

I agree individual stories are more important and need to remain strong in quality. The arcs makes the addicts, though.

Great episode this week. With the shooting of the US president. Lots of twists near the end. Marvelous writing and acting.
