Actually the first time he escaped it was through swapping his death sentence with a guard who was dying, the widow got money for it. Murdoch solved that case. The second time he escaped it was on the train with them all watching and the reason he was on the train was because they thought the hangman had been bought, but as it turned out it was Gillies setting it all up to look that way so that he could be on the train. I don't think there was another escape other than those? There was another escape after Toyland where the prison carriage went off a bridge. Yeah okay you got me there, petruck. I was mostly just thinking of the escape snacky mentioned. I don't recall them ever looking into that one. But if he was handcuffed in the back, and didn't drown, I'm thinking someone would have had to have laid a trap that caused them to veer off the bridge and then gone and saved him from drowning. They never looked for that person. I think you can tell it's always bothered me.

That article mentions that they will be doing something with Butch Cassidy...I think The Pinkertons were after his gang quite a bit back then. This talk of racial prejudice in police work has made me think of Jimmy from S2's Werewolves. George gave him a contact with The Pinkertons (who were known to hire women even). I wonder if we'll be seeing Jimmy again? carco, while Julia was having tea with her, William was looking for the syringe by rifling through her drawers. Later he finds the photo in Julia's father's (what was his name anyway) house and gives it to her. You're absolutely right CosmicCavalcade...I spoke too soon, sorry snacky I was supposed to be working (the getting paid for kind) on my computer and was sneaking peaks at Murdoch sites at the same time. Never a good combination for me. As an aside, when I watched William show the syringe to Julia all I could think of was the bloopers video when he stuck it up his nose! So glad she wasn't required to take it from him in that scene! Yep, Bat Masterson, Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid. I was trying to think of what those boys would be doing in Toronto. You could be right about a Pinkerton connection with that storyline. It would be nice to see Jimmy again too, probably a stretch though. Lionel was Julia's father's name.

Actually, now that I think about it, Brackenreid has to survive. If you think back to last summer's fan expo, Tom Craig said that he had been pitching the idea of including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in an episode. I don't think that Peter Mitchell or the writers would be so mean as to kill off his character and then use his suggestion!!

for the record, William didn't sneak into Caroline's house, he was in Julia's father's house. He found the book with letters and the portrait photo. He then spoke with Caroline and showed her the picture and she asked if she could keep it. Ooh, thanks for clarifying that - you're right. I guess it's still weird for Caroline to put the syringe in a drawer and miss the pictures, though.

I also thought William was searching her house, which I thought odd and not like him at the time, but I put it down to the fact that it was Julia that needed him to do it. But when she asks if she can keep the photograph it also gave me pause, you clearly see him finding it in the same drawer he finds the syringe... which would make it really strange for her to ask if she could keep a photograph that was already hers.

Butch Cassidy's gang was in the timeline of stuff that happened in 1902 that I found. For story writing purposes, it might also help to look at general culural trends going on (the convergence of socialism and Darwinism) or the emergence of cultural circles (Bloomsbury circle, art nouveau, modern dance, art nouveau, fanatical racism and anti-semitism, etc.). The writers could also look for inventions that are coming a few years down the road and anticipate them - like they did with the lie detector and the airplane. Anyway, if stuff didn't happen in 1902, it happened around it.

a Pinkerton connection with that storyline. MM has yet to cover the dark side of the Pinkertons as the secret agents of Big Business - strike-breaking and infiltrating labor unions, and smaller "trouble-making" groups. The US passed the Anti-Pinkerton Act in 1893 to reduce government involvement in strike-breaking: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Pinkerton_Act (talk about govt. of the corporations and against the people!!!). It's possible the Pinkertons were deployed for these purposes in Canada, too. On the other hand, it's occurred to me that one way to get Julia back into forensic medicine is to set up her own consulting practice and contract with the Pinkertons.

Okay, lol, I don't know anymore. I rewatched that tea scene and you guys are right. He found the notebook and photo at the same time as the syringe. Something doesn't add up here.

I'm pretty sure they are gearing up for her to become a full time paid 'profiler' with the constabulary. She basically already helps Murdoch do this as it is so it wouldn't change much. And it would allow them to work together more closely like they used to in the morgue without her randomly popping in all the time which I always found annoying.

About the photo: Murdoch could have arrested her if he had wanted to since she did end someone's life, so she wasn't going to take anything for granted and I guess that's why she asked to keep it even though it already belonged to her.
Or another idea: the notebook and photo actually belonged to Lionel but she took it as a way to cover her tracks. It might explain why the syringe was in the same drawer too.

Bummer - I doubt there will be much for her to do in a profiler role. And she looked so cool with her test tubes and random body parts. Which somehow reminds me - I wonder if she really is unable to have children or whether medical advances will argue otherwise...?

That's an interesting character turn for William considering how self-righteous he was about pursuing abortionists early on. When she isn't debating whether she's on the wrong side of William's moral worldview, Julia actually likes William's right-or-wrong rigidity (re: his refusal to of her "modest proposal" to live in sin). But I guess William has softened up: he didn't seem to struggle with the law at all once he knew the truth. I think he even admired how their love had lasted over the years. William seemed a lot more interested in whether Caroline approved of doing things for love. I still wish we had been given some more insight into what obstacles William was considering at this point. What was the "proper" alternative that was keeping him from acting on his love for Julia? Darcy is gone, Gillies is gone, Julia is willing. What's the big obstacle?

Lol, well I don't know for a fact that they are going to go down that route. It just seems like it. I too always preferred her in the morgue. And I really miss her morgue humour. But that's another thing, where did she get her lab stuff from? Did William bring it with him? Yeah, probably it won't be as bad as she thought and they'll have a dozen babies after they adopt their first kid! Then again, she was married to Darcy for awhile and didn't conceive...presumably prophylactics weren't used.

True but he never arrested Tash even after he found out the truth. Again for Julia's sake. He let Ava Moon go too. So he was never completely rigid when it came to upholding the law. The obstacle? Maybe he was a bit mad at her still for not telling him the truth about the death threats earlier than she did? It could explain why he seemed to be oblivious to her attempts at bringing up the proposal subject last episode.

Then again, she was married to Darcy for awhile and didn't conceive...presumably prophylactics weren't used. Julia's father was a doctor, so he might have had lab stuff on hand. As for the previous marriage...perhaps Darcy was just the wrong man for the job. Artificial insemination in 1884(!) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_insemination#HistoryThe hysteria theory probably led to a lot of examination of the uterus and the female reproductive system in general. Maybe there were some other discoveries along the way that would address the source of Julia' infertility. Or she could seek a patented Electricity Cure!
